air and the beta band

they seem as though theyre doing something really gorgeous and interesting for bands in the 'rock' genre, their matched fetishizations of production and weird similarities make me think of like an update of two bands from the eighties trevor horn crew (fgth/abc/buggles/yes/propaganda/aon/etc), is there a tradition of this sort of outlook beyond the few rock acts i know? and if such a wonderful thing existed as a modern trevor horn chart rock stable who would represent who, what would the other artists be?

the linkin park remix with motion man is like a modern-day malcolm mcclaren world famous supreme team song!!

like i was saying to dan, earlier, they're really exploring things normally held to be bombastic in internal, subtle ways. i like this a lot, which is why i hold 10000hz in such high regard. honestly, i don't think they fetishize production at all, so much as they have digested it as as much an integral part of their music as songwriting or performing.

also, the beta band's visual art is excellent and serves to further illustrate this idea.

and air too now that theyve stopped being tasteful with it, ten thousand hz had some of the nicest lp art ever

anyway matt you dont get it fetishizing production is like the highest possible compliment a band can get from me!!

"Hot Shots..." bored me, I have to say. It sounds polished and considered where they used to sound INSTINCTIVE. Drag out hypnotic grooves for 10 minutes, if that's where the mood takes you, guys. A classic case of listening to your critics TOO much. The band's self-titled debut album proper was perhaps TOO shambolic, but they tightened up to much in response to heavy criticism.

hot shots is sublime.

hey ethan would you say that dots and loops is the stereolab album that does this most? it doesn't quite have the same er attitude I guess as the betas and I've never heard air but since you like dots and loops maybe there's something similar going on there. I don't know if you've heard their other albums but I don't really think they ever get that same thing right.
