massive record. gonna vote for "The Lung," probably.

vagina détente (some dude), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:24 (fourteen years ago)

yeah this record is ridiculous

markers, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:24 (fourteen years ago)

"Sludgefeast" is the best named Dino Jr song ever, but I think I'm going to end up voting for "The Lung" too. Unless I vote for "Little Fury Things". Or "Poledo". Or "In a Jar". Ah, shit, now I need to go listen to this again.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:27 (fourteen years ago)

these were the final three i was deciding between:

Little Fury Things
Sludgefeast
The Lung

imo no remaster has every been a more dramatic improvement from one CD edition of an album to another than the Merge reissue compared to the SST disc

vagina détente (some dude), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:36 (fourteen years ago)

From listening to this album so many times, starting on an SST tape, I have come to terms with Poledo being there and kind of like it now, but man I used to hate having to get up to forward wind the tape to Show me the Way.

To me, I don't think of Just Like Heaven being on this album, as it wasn't on the Cd or tape of the one I had. Goes to show how the reissues kind of change things. I had it, but it was on that EP in the cardboard sleeve.

earlnash, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:36 (fourteen years ago)

when i first started listening to this album, i had the version with "show me the way" as the closer, but when i first bought the record, i had the version with "just like heaven" (iirc)

i think the first time i heard this was in 2006

hi (markers), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:39 (fourteen years ago)

xxp Show Me the Way and Just Like Heaven were not on You're Living All Over Me fwiw.

it's a meme i made and i like (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:40 (fourteen years ago)

ah yeah, shasta's right . . . fuck

don't vote for either of them

markers, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:40 (fourteen years ago)

i think it is funny how one CD version swaps out the bonus cover for a different bonus cover instead of using both. but yeah although i like the covers i prefer listening to the 'true' album as ending with "Poledo" (although tbh the album is REALLY just those 7 great Mascis-penned tracks for me)

vagina détente (some dude), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:41 (fourteen years ago)

up until a minute ago i had no idea this was supposed to end w/ "poledo," so i haven't listened to it w/ that in mind

markers, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:43 (fourteen years ago)

Show Me the Way was on the original SST CD and I think it was on the tape I had, not sure on the vinyl.

earlnash, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:46 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, i guess it's not really a part of the album though?

markers, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:47 (fourteen years ago)

wikipedia has it listed as a bonus track

markers, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:47 (fourteen years ago)

hands up, love that comp xp

sonderangerbot, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:47 (fourteen years ago)

There was an SST EP or single in a cardboard sleeve that had Just Like Heaven. It came out not long before Green Mind if I remember right kind of a bit after Bug.

earlnash, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:47 (fourteen years ago)

It is not on my LP copy (credited to: "DINOSAUR", no "JR")

I wonder if it was on the later pressing of the LP after they had to change the band name.

in a jar

Lamp...in my vagina?? (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:49 (fourteen years ago)

the studio "just like heaven" kinda pales in comparison to some of the live recordings i've heard from the same era tbh

Lamp...in my vagina?? (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:50 (fourteen years ago)

thread inspired me to start another i'd been meaning to do for a while: Dinosaur Jr.'s "Just Like Heaven" vs. The Pixies' "Head On"

dell (del), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 03:59 (fourteen years ago)

dell (del), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 04:01 (fourteen years ago)

i haven't heard this record in forever. i do remember seeing them in Santa Monica in 1994 and SeBADoh a month earlier at the Roxy on Sunset. i liked the Roxy show better.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 05:06 (fourteen years ago)

Underrated Aerosmith Cover Band was the opener for Sebadoh @ Roxy in 94 iirc and i do believe irc.

yeap, it was the Mountain Goats who opened.

great fucking night.

btw, that was one of the last shows i saw (along with the Cranes and Stone Roses) in So Cal before moving to San Francisco in the first half of 1995.

same here.

gonna vote the lung but the whole album is a traet, and works best as a whole thing for me. have very clear memories of walking in the summer rain around my hometown when i was 17 with a cassette I'd made with this on one side and I don't remember what was on the other side because i would always wind it back to listen to YLAOM again.

sbgorf (stevie), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 07:24 (fourteen years ago)

this album is proper sublime, btw.

sbgorf (stevie), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 07:24 (fourteen years ago)

raisans fer life.

charlie h, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 07:34 (fourteen years ago)

"The Lung", was my favorite the first time I listened and is still my favorite Dinosaur, Jr., song. Perfect guitar solo, coming at the perfect time in the song, followed by the super-cool outro.

grandavis, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 13:57 (fourteen years ago)

"Raisans." Saw them in a small club in 1987.

clemenza, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

voted raisans. has my favorite mascis guitar solo

bluelips, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 15:03 (fourteen years ago)

raisans for me too! guitar on that is unbelieeeeevable.

tylerw, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 15:04 (fourteen years ago)

Tyler: Do you hear Neil on that first LP? You heard that all the time when it came out.

clemenza, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 15:11 (fourteen years ago)

(I mean sounds-like-Neil, not that he secretly appeared on it.)

clemenza, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 15:11 (fourteen years ago)

not so much on the first album? neil young filtered through the meat puppets maybe. dunno, i think mascis has gotten more neil young-y as the years have gone by.

tylerw, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 15:19 (fourteen years ago)

I just gave "Raisans" a listen. I hear Neil in the singing, when he gets to the "I've been down..." part.

clemenza, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 15:24 (fourteen years ago)

Do you think Neil knows Dino Jr? Sebadoh III is a total NY influenced record.

I kind of hope so.

earlnash, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 04:08 (fourteen years ago)

Ppl have been making Neil/Mascis comparisons since way before the Internet

lol b, the based guffaw (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 05:12 (fourteen years ago)

Poledo

Colin Allstations (PaulTMA), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 09:29 (fourteen years ago)

I've got the SST vinyl Dinosaur Jr version, it ends with Poledo. as it should!

zappi, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 09:44 (fourteen years ago)

If 'Show Me The Way' had been on the album it would have kind of ruined it a bit for me. Voted 'Little Fury Things', first song of theirs I ever heard. Even more than any of J's solos, I just love the way the way he uses his whatever-pedal-it-is on this - that glorious big whushhhhh that comes in on the later iterations of the chorus

NickB, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 10:21 (fourteen years ago)

i think its a wahwah pedal pushed all the way down. i love the way he uses that trebly wash of white noise on this record

bluelips, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 14:46 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Thursday, 25 August 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

these results are pretty otm. can't remember what i voted for but listening to it right now i would have gone with raisans, mascis at his most tortured. love that odd guitar tone too.

sonderangerbot, Friday, 26 August 2011 02:49 (fourteen years ago)

yay!

strident gumrakers (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 26 August 2011 13:42 (fourteen years ago)

when someone recommended the first dinosaur album to me back in '86 he described it as "neil young with tenpenny nails driven through his head"

also have the first 2 dinosaur LPs w/ no jr

hello I love you but I've chosen darkness my old friend (Edward III), Friday, 26 August 2011 13:48 (fourteen years ago)

I didn't like living all over me when it came out and dug the first album a lot more, came to terms with it around '89 but still think the best dino song is prolly "repulsion" or "forget the swan"

hello I love you but I've chosen darkness my old friend (Edward III), Friday, 26 August 2011 13:52 (fourteen years ago)

Thinking that 'Leper', 'Repulsion' and esp. 'Forget the Swan' are as good as most things on YLAOM, but maybe not much else from the first album? Has been years since I listened to it though.

haha xp!

NickB, Friday, 26 August 2011 13:55 (fourteen years ago)

severed lips and qwest are keepers too IMHO

low content wine racing (stevie), Friday, 26 August 2011 16:59 (fourteen years ago)

Tarpit deserves much more respect.

nostormo, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 09:05 (fourteen years ago)

I was going to make the very same point. "Tarpit" is a great song, would have been my #2 after "The Lung".

grandavis, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 14:34 (fourteen years ago)

two years pass...

Was just thinking of starting this poll. Would have voted for "Raisans."

Immediate Follower (NA), Thursday, 3 July 2014 20:59 (eleven years ago)

Wish I would have voted- Little Fury Things in a walk.

Dokken played here for a Ribfest and people were total assholes (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 3 July 2014 22:20 (eleven years ago)

This is one of those albums where you put it on and play the whole thing right through isn't it? Poledo's just there to signal that the rollercoaster ride's at an end and it's time to get off.

saw them in 2006, amazing setlist, only songs from the first 3 albums + "The Wagon," I vividly remember Mascis' purple stacks being so loud that the air being pushed out of them was blowing his hair around the whole time lol

flappy bird, Wednesday, 15 November 2017 18:32 (eight years ago)

yeah D jr show still the loudest ive been to
