I was going to say I gave up on them after this album, but they haven't done much since, but, yes, I pretty much gave up on them after this album

Duncan Disorderly (Tom D.), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 09:07 (fourteen years ago)

See, I didn't really like this album when it first came out, but its really grown on my over the last eight(!) years. There's a nice detached, floating vibe to some of this that hits me in a nice spot, particularly on tracks like "Captain" and "The Argus". I understand one of the complaints about this album is that some of the "silly" tunes feel lazy and tacked-on, which is totally fair, but that's not always been my favorite thing about Ween anyway.

Kind of disappointed to only have two responses so far.

Confess that the first time I heard "So Many People in the Neighborhood" I was laughing so much I could barely breathe - admittedly I was in my cups at the time

Voted "Chocolate Town"

I hope the new demo set that was released online brings some much-needed attention to this album. I always felt it was one of their very best.

It really is a great album, I'm surprised more fans of The Mollusk don't get into this one, probably the closest thematically I can see.

I know how great these guys are at paying homage, but "It's Gonna Be A Long Right" really does sound like a Motorhead demo.

Zoloft all the way!

karma's ruthless invisible (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 23 August 2011 16:45 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, gotta be "Chocolate Town." Kind of a dismal tears-of-a-clown aura to this record.

bentelec, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

I like Zoloft a lot but the live version they did in their 2004 Chicago set just blew the doors off this one.

"Transdermal Celebration" is also pretty damn great, has the Oasis sound but is like a million times better than anything they ever did.

frogbs, Tuesday, 23 August 2011 17:10 (fourteen years ago)

Wow, I've never really made that Oasis connection before, but it makes total sense.

Voted 'I Don't Want It'. Vastly preferred 'White Pepper', despite the lack of "brownness"

the Caesar demo version of "It's Gonna be a Long Night" is hilarious, apparently performed by someone about to undergo throat surgery

frogbs, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 18:35 (fourteen years ago)

hmm, don't get the oasis/transdermal connex - great song, tho

this is an underrated album.

torn b/w zoloft & chocolate town

I've narrowed it down to "The Argus", "Captain", "Chocolate Town" or "Transdermal Celebration".

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:46 (fourteen years ago)

The Argus is impressive for condensing an epic into 4 & 1/2 minutes--even the outro guitar solo has alot of variety for being so short.

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 22:30 (fourteen years ago)

Tried and True gets my vote. It's gorgeous and ridiculous at the same time.

This is probably my second favorite Ween after the Mollusk. White Pepper is good but sounds a bit sterile and doesn't flow like most of their other records. I do think this one loses steam at the end, the last song sounds like bad Flaming Lips with some Radiohead mixed in.

Hope they have another record in them to make up for that last piece of shit they put out...

After some deliberation, I have decided to sail brown bay to chocolatetown.

someone gave me this album when it came out & I don't know anything else about this band, gave this a few spins & forgot about it but I remember "Happy Colored Marbles" being a jam so I voted for it.

Can't argue too much with the results, but would've thought we could get more than 15 votes.
