seriously, it's the shit. better versions of the big tunes from the studio records, with kenny garrett, foley, ricky wellman, etc

Live Around the World is pretty great (and the 20CD Complete Miles Davis at Montreux box is a motherfucker), but it came out in 1996 so it's outside the purview of this poll.

I was gonna vote in the post-45 poll, but it got overwhelming - too many possible nominations, etc., etc.

Aura is the best album here but I've always wondered how involved/engaged Miles was.

gonna check out Live Around the World; Star People & Decoy definitely have some moments

im sure you could make a ballot. Doo-Bop is overall pretty meh, but "Mystery" is kinda fantastic.

i kind of like You're Under Arrest -- I'm not gonna say it's an amazing record or anything, but when I listen to it, i dig it.

there are a few worthy tracks on it. I like the live records and Star People. A few tracks on Aura (White in particular is prob. the last great thing he made) are good...the rest is forgettable to awful. No love for Tutu, I never got why people like that one.

"Tutu" is my favourite Miles album besides "Kind Of Blue", and thus pretty hard to avoid here.

but star people is a motherfucker. the first four records here kind of pick up where miles left off in the '70s; it's just more straight-up funk.

Re: Star People, the cover used to freak me out a little bit and I love that he was the first to jump the "It Gets Better" bandwagon. Oh, and the guitar work on "Speak" is pretty intense.

You're Under Arrest was the one my dad played maybe the most back then on house-cleaning days, and as a result I am trained to not like it.

I'm gonna refrain from voting, as I haven't heard or barely remember many of these, but I did relisten to Doo-Bop last week, along with a few other jazz-rap CDs I sorta liked at the time and haven't played since: US3, Buckshot Lefonque and Greg Osby (hey, I do the unpleasant work so you won't have to.) Doo-Bop held up best, imo. (Faint praise...)

Siesta is good too, if you're okay with the Marcus Miller-era Miles sound. Kind of "Sketches of Spain"-ish. Trippy film.

Also surprised Amandla wasn't higher, and really surprised Aura ended up where it did. I don't like that record much at all, myself.

I would've voted for Aura. Easily the best Miles Davis album of this era IMHO though it probably says something that it was conceived and spearheaded by someone else albeit with Miles in mind.

The whole 20CD box? I was actually sent a promo copy of that thing when it came out. The record business used to be really something.

Been listening to some Mike Stern and John Scofield and for as much as I have heard Miles Davis, I really have not listened to any of the post 74 stuff at all. There is quite a bit of good video of his later groups online.

yes, the 20-disc box!!!! the ‘88 date smokes, and the first two discs are like another agharta!

That box was what really sold me on his 80s work. Those bands killed it onstage. I talked a lot about that in my book.

I was not an ILXor when this was initially polled, but this would have been a difficult choice between Aura and Amandla. Star People also worthy of consideration.

Miles Davis' first comeback record finds the trumpeter a bit shaky (he would improve album by album during the next few years) and has a few poppish throwaway tracks; it is doubtful if anyone really remembers the title cut or "Shout." But with Bill Evans on soprano and electric bassist Marcus Miller, the other four selections are more rewarding with Davis forming the nucleus of his new band.

but the live stuff is even better

Hearing the live stuff first ruined me for the studio albums

idk I like hearing the "platonic ideal" versions from a songwriting pov

that said I do think the mixing feels kind of sterile and like its trying to neuter the low end ... obviously this stuff should have been mixed like 12" extended dance edits
