"Teenage Dream"
Would've been on my list except I was pretty sure it'd peaked last year.
― Gus Van Sant's Gerry Blank (Eric H.), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:42 (fourteen years ago)
no love for "i'm on one"??
― funky house septics (D-40), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:43 (fourteen years ago)
oh lol I thought I'd removed that from my list
replace that with "6 Foot 7 Foot"
― Rob Based and DJ EZ God (DJP), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 20:43 (fourteen years ago)
Subtract Pitbull and LMFAO from J0rdan's list and you'd pretty much have mine.

Yeah, I used Eric's list as well, but added "Pretty Girl Rock," which peaked at #24.

"Lupe Fiasco, "The Show Goes On""
**throws up**
― funky house septics (D-40), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:15 (fourteen years ago)
yeah as someone who really really really REALLY loves The Cool hearing "The Show Goes On" is akin to watching your favorite niece slowly and methodically vivisect a kitten
― Rob Based and DJ EZ God (DJP), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:17 (fourteen years ago)
i f/w motivation, super bass, party rock anthem, i'm on one (cant believe im the only one into this), TGIF, Look At Me Now, Black and Yellow (although that feels very 2010 to me), S&M
im just kinda aite with the pitbull/afrojack joint
i agree w/ tim's comment elsewhere that the adele song sounds best in anonymous house remix form

"look at me now" is dope but it got very annoying, verrrrry quickly -- prob the most prevalent radio song of the year ime
katy b isn't a charting artist in the US
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:22 (fourteen years ago)
no one specified US besides Eric
― Rob Based and DJ EZ God (DJP), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:23 (fourteen years ago)
i think it was implied
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:24 (fourteen years ago)
not that the katy b song isn't great -- i'm just being an asshole
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:25 (fourteen years ago)
if you live in the US, no voting for non-US charting artists
― funky house septics (D-40), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:25 (fourteen years ago)
Haha, re "The Show Goes On": I guess it's just cool to hear the "Float On" sample, how it's manipulated, or hell, the fact that there's a top-10 hit that even *has* a recognizable sample, which makes it sound pretty different from the rest of the pop landscape in 2011.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:25 (fourteen years ago)
"Sure Thing" never hit me that hard, kinda sounds like a country song imo
― funky house septics (D-40), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:27 (fourteen years ago)
I think the thing that pisses me off the most about "The Show Goes On" is that the rapidfire section is technically impressive but it's in the middle of an awful awful awful song
― Rob Based and DJ EZ God (DJP), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:28 (fourteen years ago)
i'd love to hear a country cover of "sure thing"
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:28 (fourteen years ago)
Just curious, what's awful about "The Show Goes On"? I have no idea what it's about or, really, any of the words besides "the show goes on."
― jaymc, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:29 (fourteen years ago)
prob the most prevalent radio song of the year ime
I think the Pitbull song has taken over this title now, tbh.
And that is just a recreation of the melody from "Float On" for the Lupe song, I guess that was one of the many battles he went through over the album. I can't remember which it was for sure right now, but either Modest Mouse's lable wouldn't let him use it, or Lupe's label didn't want to pay for it. But, yeah jaymc, your point stands re an identifiable "sample" like this.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:29 (fourteen years ago)
i liked "Show Goes On" before i realized what the corny-ass sample was, still grudgingly like the song (way more than anything off The Cool -- sometimes an artist's true vision is such bullshit that selling out is actually an improvement)
― some dude, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:30 (fourteen years ago)
I don't hate it, btw, I just think its overplayed and a bit cheesy.
― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:30 (fourteen years ago)
lol al
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:30 (fourteen years ago)
knowing or not knowing the sample shit is schmaltzy as hell. jr. high motivational shit
― funky house septics (D-40), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:32 (fourteen years ago)
I hate the way the sample sounds and the tempo and groove of the beat picks up on all of the things I DIDN'T like about The Cool ("Paris, Tokyo", to a lesser degree "Gold Watch") and focuses on it rather than the stuff on that album I really, really liked ("The Cool", "Hip-Hop Saved My Life", "Little Weapon", "Streets On Fire", "Hello Goodbye")
in summation you can call me Anti-Al
― Rob Based and DJ EZ God (DJP), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:32 (fourteen years ago)
xp Huh, OK.
Fwiw, I don't like "The Show Goes On" as much as "Kick, Push."
― jaymc, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:34 (fourteen years ago)
well i agree w/ you that "Paris, Tokyo" is garbage but i don't hear anything it has in common w/ "Show Goes On"
― some dude, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:35 (fourteen years ago)
and yeah "Hip Hop Saved My Life" was dope, forgot about that one
― some dude, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:36 (fourteen years ago)
it's pretty hilarious how Lupe turned down those songs B.o.B crossed over with and then ended up with other stuff just as shameless
― some dude, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:37 (fourteen years ago)
mostly the similarity is just "slow, plodding beat with zero swing"
― Rob Based and DJ EZ God (DJP), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:37 (fourteen years ago)
if Lupe had done "Airplanes" or "Nothing On You" I would have been much, much happier with his breakthrough
― Rob Based and DJ EZ God (DJP), Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:38 (fourteen years ago)
i don't think of "Show Goes On" as plodding, the beat feels very busy with a lot of forward momentum to me
― some dude, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:41 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, what I like about the "sample" is how spiky and darting it is.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 21:43 (fourteen years ago)
hip hop saved my life is the best song with the worst song title

("Paris, Tokyo", to a lesser degree "Gold Watch")
These are the best songs on that album! And "The Show Goes On" is terrible. Deej otm re: "jr. high motivational shit". Corny MOR-rap garbage. If you're going to rep for that, you might as well go to stump for "I Need a Goddamned Doctor" too.
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 22:20 (fourteen years ago)
thing is Lupe was always corny and MOR, he was just less slavishly chasing the pop charts
― some dude, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 22:27 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, but he used to be at rap's middle of the road, rather than pop's middle of the road, and I like the former better.
― The Reverend, Wednesday, 24 August 2011 22:28 (fourteen years ago)
"The Show Goes On" is terrible (mostly because "Float On" is a really terrible & boring melody to jack), but I fuck w/"Out Of My Head"

also for someone with her level of success it's remarkable that i feel like i know more about dev's personality through her music than through her "image" or what she yells about her art or whatever vomit glitter she dresses up in
― lex pretend, Thursday, 25 August 2011 20:03 (fourteen years ago)
i wish people wouldn't equate "worthy of talking about" with "chart popularity"
― lex pretend, Thursday, August 25, 2011 4:01 PM (1 minute ago) Bookmark
well sure -- but also if you're gonna talk about pop music in 2011 or decide to listen to the radio at any point, thinking about katy perry is pretty unavoidable
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 25 August 2011 20:03 (fourteen years ago)
& anyway it's not like ppl are writing book-long tumblr essays about katy perry or anything
ok, LA sounds about right actually - maybe i just associate her/that sound with miami because it was miami where i found "like a g6" to be most ubiquitous when i was there

lol in the middle of "booty bounce" she just sings the whole "like a g6" hook

I'd have listed "Gucci Gucci," but it's stuck at #77, so I dunno if it counts.

oh n/m then
low bar for "sufficiently singular as of yet to be repped at length and by many", it's not at all "obvious" that kreayshawn is, whatever you might think of it. c'mon now.
but i don't really believe u can't go crazy based on one release. i'll wax lyrical about some random rap 12" that 300 ppl heard on release, tho there's a time & hype gap there. but think u need to lighten up deej!
― zvookster, Thursday, 25 August 2011 20:18 (fourteen years ago)
"bass down low" is pretty good -- the "like a G6" hook is cool too, tho much better than the song it was taken from
otm, there's also a nice mix of in the dark
― zvookster, Thursday, 25 August 2011 20:20 (fourteen years ago)
la electroclash doesnt mega strike me as a particularly singular deal - like it is an intuitively obvious connection - although i guess maybe if i sat myself down and meditated on it it probably is unusual to an extent
likewise kreayshawn presses no one's noodle back as zvook says
rampant overuse of "singular" here basically imo
― r|t|c, Thursday, 25 August 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)
haha or perhaps really what i mean to say is its not singular if it's unique in ways i don't care about
― r|t|c, Thursday, 25 August 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)
by singular i just mean stands out which both songs unquestionably do?
― funky house septics (D-40), Thursday, 25 August 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)
"in the dark" is def the dev song i really love rather than like - i'm not, like, stanning for her yet, just think she's doing something that no one else really is, and doing it in a low-key fashion but still being successful with it, which is pretty much all that singularity is
electroclash was my thing back in the day though
― lex pretend, Thursday, 25 August 2011 20:29 (fourteen years ago)
kreayshawn seems a bit like the princess superstar de nos jours, which i don't mean entirely as a diss

chixx at my college liked 'bad babysitter' - not bad novelty joint
not at all chart pop tho
― funky house septics (D-40), Thursday, 25 August 2011 20:36 (fourteen years ago)
didn't you have a different method of doing the charts then? "bad babysitter" got to no 11 here, then she got a random top 3 hit with a dance track a few years later. didn't like "bad babysitter" that much - too novelty as you say - but "we got panache" and "wet!wet!wet!" were jams. as is "gucci gucci", but i don't kid myself that the annoying stuff about kreayshawn isn't going to swiftly take over
― lex pretend, Thursday, 25 August 2011 20:40 (fourteen years ago)
princess superstar wasnt even a stones throw close to the charts here
― funky house septics (D-40), Thursday, 25 August 2011 21:00 (fourteen years ago)
like kreay love or hate her is much much closer to being a chart-able american artist than princess superstar ever was
― funky house septics (D-40), Thursday, 25 August 2011 21:02 (fourteen years ago)
you can have that argument with yourself if you want, i was just pointing out that princess superstar is the one who's actually had multiple top 20 hits somewhere
― lex pretend, Thursday, 25 August 2011 21:08 (fourteen years ago)
its not rlly an argument -- kreay has already charted higher
― funky house septics (D-40), Thursday, 25 August 2011 21:11 (fourteen years ago)
the USA is not the only country with a pop chart

― funky house septics (D-40), Thursday, 25 August 2011 21:14 (fourteen years ago)
sigh this is such a deejian spiral into pedantry but we were talking about chart success, i pointed out princess superstar has enjoyed it, at which point you narrowed it down to american chart success which was not what we were talking about
― lex pretend, Thursday, 25 August 2011 21:15 (fourteen years ago)
i didnt 'narrow it down' i just explained that in the states she didnt chart! which was true. i never said anything about how she did on other charts

I f/w this brastep remix of "In the Dark". Don't think I've heard the original tho. I don't dislike any of the Dev songs I've heard, but she just seems like kind of a nonentity? Like someone I can't imagine anyone having strong opinions about.

As far as the LA electroclash thing goes, I feel like there's a stronger basis in electro (in the original sense of the term) rhythms than in comparable scenes in other cities and that's kind of it's distinctive thing? I may be talking out of my ass tho.
― The Reverend, Thursday, 25 August 2011 22:34 (fourteen years ago)

And that's it. The actual number of records to have charted in the UK this year seems ridiculously low, they just seem to hang around for ages. Once I get below that lot I'm into Rolling In The Deep territory and it'd be a stretch to say I actually liked that.
― Matt DC, Friday, 26 August 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)
ok i picked my 10. i restricted it to the hot 100's top 40 even though there were a lot of songs outside the top 40 that i like better.

Is there a list somewhere of songs that made the top 40 in 2011? I was pleased to see Eric H's link for songs that made the top 20, since I was previously only aware of songs that hit the top 10.
