i gotta admit i slept on this album even tho i liked "back to black" a whole lot - totally different feel & style than the second one but parts of this are really masterful - i've been sitting on this so hopefully this isn't 'too soon'

PUT IT IN THE BOX PUT IT IN THE BOX

my own private kanyes west (The Brainwasher), Friday, 26 August 2011 02:48 (fourteen years ago)

this is much harder than a B2B poll would be for me. this is such a great and smart album - WKIW this amy forever. tempted to go "in my bed" - that opening line is, just, POW. "wish i could say it breaks my heart, like you did in the beginning" - what a way to set up a narrative. and then you get "the only time i hold your hand/is to get the angle right" later, haw.

"in the box" is just straight up devastating.

"amy amy amy" is probably the most underrated here - love the line "just to show him how it feels, i walk past his desk in heels", that's so perceptive - using sexual power as, like, this revenge on this person for making you feel that way about them.

"you sent me flying"! again amazing lyrics - i kind of feel frank has a really different lyrical voice to back to black, much snappier and quotable. "at least you're attracted to me, which i did not expect".

"fuck me pumps" is classic quotability 4eva obv. i like how it stops just short of going all mean girls on us - there's that affection at the end, "without girls like you there'd be no fun". her comic timing on this song is superb. kinda poignant to listen back and hear amy mock people for doing too many drugs and getting fake tits, though.

for me it's probably between "you sent me flying" and "help yourself"

frogsb (k3vin k.), Friday, 26 August 2011 15:52 (fourteen years ago)

i like help yourself a lot but maybe i heard love is blind

stronger than me and fuck me pumps are both kind of undeniable but the gender politics are too offputting

horseshoe, Friday, 26 August 2011 18:22 (fourteen years ago)

there's that affection at the end, "without girls like you there'd be no fun"

well, she means, no one to mock, right?

kinda surprised no one cares about this album! where did the british ppl go?

frogsb (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 04:12 (fourteen years ago)

i'm really surprised as well. there are so many boring threads on ilm right now!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 07:52 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

#1 otm, poor In My Bed

challopian rubes (sic), Sunday, 4 September 2011 23:29 (fourteen years ago)

Missed this poll, but my favourite is probably "I Heard Love Is Blind", swiftly followed by Take the Box and October Song. Cherry is a great vamp, even if it's reallllly short, and her cover of Moody's Mood for Love is an astounding display of her control over her voice/tone/etc.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 5 September 2011 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

would have voted 'you sent me flying'

D-40, Monday, 5 September 2011 01:12 (fourteen years ago)

surprisingly dominant winner! "in my bed" should've got more.

19 votes but only 4 of y'all bothered to post, kmt

there's that affection at the end, "without girls like you there'd be no fun"

well, she means, no one to mock, right?

yeah - but i think the acknowledgement that they operate in the same social sphere, they go to the same clubs etc, is important - it's not mockery from a distance, there's an acknowledgement that amy isn't that far removed from those girls herself

lex pretend, Monday, 5 September 2011 08:53 (fourteen years ago)

Funny, "Stronger than me" got no votes, I would have voted it but mainly because it's the only one I know (which is why I didn't).

Mark G, Monday, 5 September 2011 08:54 (fourteen years ago)

i voted for "you sent me flying" - the vocals on that are just astounding, and listening to her sing that song (and knowing she wrote it) at age 20 makes me feel like a complete bum

k3vin k., Monday, 5 September 2011 15:32 (fourteen years ago)

i think i'm more impressed with the singing on this record than her second one, even if i think her second is the stronger album overall

k3vin k., Monday, 5 September 2011 15:33 (fourteen years ago)

nine years pass...

was driving home last night and put on my Spotify playlist as I just didn't wanna play metal. "You Sent Me Flying" came on.

equal parts warmth and overwhelming sadness. it's just the perfect tune, the chord progressions, her use of dynamics, phrasing, utter command of the song. and knowing she would be dead less than 10 years later. just seems wrong.

also this song reminds me of one of the last good years of my life before my mental health took a semi-permanent turn for the worse (ironically, before I was taking antidepressants). I played this album a lot that year, and this song especially.

I really think I need to make today a Winehouse day. also k3vin otm upthread.
