i like a lot of these songs, but "Diamond Raft" entrances me so much that i feel i have to vote for it, one of my favorite album-closers of all time

some dude, Friday, 26 August 2011 04:39 (fourteen years ago)

ha, i own this album and have no idea where it is. probably in the garage, will try and listen and vote.

Bee OK, Friday, 26 August 2011 04:45 (fourteen years ago)

sold! is so fucking incredible i cant quite land on the right metaphor to describe how effective a banger it is but the weird layers they keep adding as it plays it always please me so much

god hates fats (Lamp), Friday, 26 August 2011 04:45 (fourteen years ago)

yeah "Sold!" is definitely in my top 3, that's really an airtight pop/rock song.

some dude, Friday, 26 August 2011 04:48 (fourteen years ago)

my top five probably looks like:

sold!
in this city
high society
diamond raft
leave it to rust

god hates fats (Lamp), Friday, 26 August 2011 04:48 (fourteen years ago)

I'm gonna wait to re-listen to this before voting, but I'm leaning toward "Natural Disaster." Such a perfect little pop song.

It's been so long since I've heard this album I can't remember a lot of the songs, but I recall that the opening track absolutely rips. Definitely an album that just pulls you right in.

Evan R, Friday, 26 August 2011 05:10 (fourteen years ago)

hey you
come on over heeeeere

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 26 August 2011 06:02 (fourteen years ago)

You have been chosen.

"Old Dominion" is awesome.

purrington, Friday, 26 August 2011 06:19 (fourteen years ago)

Played sold! At my wedding so that is prob going to get my vote, but I will listen to it again before being impulsive.

dougie instructor (jjjusten), Friday, 26 August 2011 07:26 (fourteen years ago)

title track is one of those "the thought of this transports me to a specific time and place in my youth" tracks so it has to be that one

dj roombahton (zachlyon), Monday, 29 August 2011 03:58 (fourteen years ago)

"natural disasters" but jeez there were some jams on this

unique housing opportunity (swanbed.gif) (govern yourself accordingly), Monday, 29 August 2011 05:50 (fourteen years ago)

I just saw this poll-- my wife and I relistened to this just last week. Great album. 'Sold!' is the best Rick Springfield cover that is not a Rick Springfield cover.

righteousmaelstrom, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 22:19 (fourteen years ago)

Was just going to vote for Now You Has Jazz, then realised it's wrong High Soc.

Dr X O'Skeleton, Tuesday, 30 August 2011 22:33 (fourteen years ago)

Voted "Old Dominion" just over "Natural Disasters" and "Salty". The whole album is pretty fucking great, though.

cwkiii, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 00:17 (fourteen years ago)

so is anyone else obsessed with "Diamond Raft"?

✇ ruehl (some dude), Wednesday, 31 August 2011 00:21 (fourteen years ago)

I remember this as one of those albums where every song was my favorite at one point or another. Still think it's kinda underrated in the "indie" or whatever canon. Any favorite track I pick would be just for the moment...

dlp9001, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 02:08 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, I'd add that this one is *waaaaay* better than Believo, though I have to thank that record for bringing SeeThru records to my attention, meaning I also found the Thou album "Put Us In Tune" (recorded over old Portishead tracks) which is one of the great lost indie albums of the 00's.

dlp9001, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 02:17 (fourteen years ago)

I remember discovering this album, Unwound's "Leaves Turn Inside You" and Blonde Redhead's "Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons" all in the same week. That's the memory that probably most tempts me to become one of those "indie rock used to be better" guys

Evan R, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 18:11 (fourteen years ago)

real talk i actually regarded this album as a big disappointment initially, i guess i wanted Believo 2 and thought that the departure of the Skeleton Key guys and the addition of Toko Yasuda was a step in a direction i wasn't interested and didn't even check out Hocus Pocus. but later on i chilled out on that view and picked up the later album and comp and regard High Society as a minor classic.

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

"Natural Disasters," no content.

jaymc, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 23:50 (fourteen years ago)

Ha, I mean no CONTEST.

jaymc, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 23:50 (fourteen years ago)

I actually haven't heard this album in a dog's age, but I have a vague memory of "Diamond Raft" reminding me of Ben Folds Five's "Battle of Who Could Care Less."

jaymc, Wednesday, 31 August 2011 23:51 (fourteen years ago)

ok now you HAVE to listen to it again just so you can defend/explain that to me

lil dawg (some dude), Thursday, 1 September 2011 00:08 (fourteen years ago)

any answer besides "Natural Disasters" is sheer lunacy

Darin, Thursday, 1 September 2011 01:55 (fourteen years ago)

i don't even like that song

lil dawg (some dude), Thursday, 1 September 2011 01:59 (fourteen years ago)

can't believe no one's mentioned "disposable parts" or "salty". the whole album is a jam but for me those two have always been elevated above the rest

In the long run, we will all be cyberpunks (Z S), Thursday, 1 September 2011 02:00 (fourteen years ago)

going with "salty" because the chorus is the most rockingnest thing they ever did

In the long run, we will all be cyberpunks (Z S), Thursday, 1 September 2011 02:04 (fourteen years ago)

ok now you HAVE to listen to it again just so you can defend/explain that to me

Ha, OK, it just has a similar descending chord progression at the beginning.

jaymc, Thursday, 1 September 2011 02:44 (fourteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Thursday, 1 September 2011 23:01 (fourteen years ago)

i never realized the "birthday cake steak and wine" song was a popular favorite, always struck me as kind of inane and annoying

some dude, Thursday, 1 September 2011 23:40 (fourteen years ago)

cool to see another vote for "Diamond Raft" though!

some dude, Thursday, 1 September 2011 23:41 (fourteen years ago)

lol @ more votes than posts itt

*clicks 'OK'* (Lamp), Thursday, 1 September 2011 23:41 (fourteen years ago)

that's totally a good thing! i knew it wouldn't inspire a ton of discussion but it's a pleasant surprise to see more than a dozen voters

some dude, Thursday, 1 September 2011 23:42 (fourteen years ago)

i remember seeing them on the believo tour and finally giving in after getting worn down by the crowd and angrily playing 3 brainiac songs.

let me save you some time - yes, it's probably racist (jjjusten), Thursday, 1 September 2011 23:44 (fourteen years ago)

i always forget the skeleton key connection, man i miss that fucking band

let me save you some time - yes, it's probably racist (jjjusten), Thursday, 1 September 2011 23:44 (fourteen years ago)

*clicks 'OK'* (Lamp), Thursday, 1 September 2011 23:45 (fourteen years ago)

i got into brainiac cuz i liked enon which i got into cuz i liked skeleton key

some dude, Thursday, 1 September 2011 23:56 (fourteen years ago)

Interesting that these results are weighed so heavily toward the back of the album. It pushes against my memory of it as a very front-loaded record

Evan R, Friday, 2 September 2011 14:48 (fourteen years ago)

Found my old copy of this, was really enjoying it until my girlfriend hears the first track and asks if I am listening to Weezer

Evan R, Saturday, 3 September 2011 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

four months pass...

i dug this out @ the time of this poll and am only getting to it now -- really great. just among the songs that got zero votes i unabashedly love 'shoulder', 'in this city' & 'count sheep'

i think i wouldve voted 'diamond raft' but it's a v tough choice

johnny crunch, Friday, 27 January 2012 14:45 (fourteen years ago)

every song on this record is great imo

unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 27 January 2012 15:08 (fourteen years ago)

'Disposable Parts' no votes??? ;_;

no more mr. nice girls (Abbbottt), Friday, 27 January 2012 15:11 (fourteen years ago)
