Purple Rain

i.... kind of agree! "purple rain" the song is pretty great on headphones but the rest of it seems to demand more space

I'm in the minority these days, I'm sure, but I always feel like I'm settling for second-best when wearing headphones/in-ear phones. Don't get me wrong, they're a necessity, as I'm a public transportation rider . . .

totally agreed. i hate headphones.

I love headphones but it doesn't compare to a great soundsystem

I guess mostly stuff with really harsh stereo separation. The Ramones 1st album with all the guitar in one ear and the bass in the other for example
― The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Friday, 26 August 2011 23:35 (fourteen years ago)
Any remixed-for-fake-stereo records from the 60s with similarly ridiculous separation, e.g. the drums in one speaker and vocals in the other. The UK version of Mr Fantsay by Traffic is a typically egregious example.

Purple Rain, I noticed, a few days ago, sounds amazing at minimum volume. You can hear every detail perfectly.

I find Drums and Guns by Low totally I listenable on headphones, due to the 60s style stereo separation..
