Definitely search Girls Can Tell, and to a lesser extent the new one.

As classic as a late 90's/early 00's indie band can be...
― A.V. Alexandre (Keiko), Sunday, 8 September 2002 03:43 (twenty-three years ago)
I get the impression that, as Spoon gets closer to refining their own unique sound, it gets farther away from the things about their sound I originally liked. Kind of like Bowery Electric did.

Telephono: monochromatic, oblique, of course pixiesish. Solid all the way through.
A Series of Sneaks: Xgau just called it "too spiky and too cryptic." in his CG entry on KTM. It's up to your Wire and/or Pavement-damaged tastes whether that is possible. I like this one because it sounds like they wrote an album of almost-radio-ready alt-rock and then pruned off anything obvious. A real tease of an album, it circles and nudges around the implied payoff (ie the Cobain kick-in chorus) and never slaps you with it, always taking the last-second exit elsewhere or nowhere. Tension with no release, a rare thing in american guitar rock.
Girls Can Tell: vulgar choruses galore. I only find myself going back to "Everything Hits At Once," a vibe-led Fleetwood Mac rip.
Kill the Moonlight: haven't made up my mind yet. Obvious protools touches. Digs deeper into the repetition of stuff like "Take the Fifth." and the fractured character of Sneaks. I like the 12string/falsetto number near the end.

Still haven't made up my mind about Moonlight yet. I think "too patient" is good. They have plenty of songs where they seem to think a small idea is a big one, ie it won't come off as minimal and/or baroque but just thin; they'll sit on something dull for too long.

All three albums I own (Series of Sneaks, Girls Can Tell, Kill The Moonlight) are good, but only the first two are absolutely essential to me. Kill The Moonlight feels a little too smooth.

As I said earlier in the thread, if you're still skeptical about Spoon, get the Soft Effects EP.

Saw them last night, after not paying attention to them for ages, and they are a super fun live band. Even better than the first time I saw them, which was at a festival. Loose and grooving, rock n roll without being retro about it. I didn't know at least two-thirds of the songs, but it didn't matter — they all sounded good.

The best band evah
If you want to win me over then open with two songs from Kill the Moonlight. There was something really fun that happened last night. Britt noticed someone shirt and had him come on stage. He didn't know this person and was not connected with the band. The shirt had lyrics from a song they released just that day so he asked. The guy said he got a notice about the song at 8 AM and then made the shirt for the concert.
My only complaint is that they closed with "Wild," a good live song but not a closer. "Wild" and "My Babe" work live but they could drop Cut. They also only played "I Ain't the One" from Hot Thoughts.
