Best Prince Side-Project - POLL

jesus christ there are a lot of these. tons of one-off production jobs of dubious merit, but also a lot of gold scattered throughout. fully expect the Time to win this, but was hoping to spur some discussion about some of the lesser known stuff I've never heard (The Family album, Jill Jones, etc.)

oof my bad. that's his latest "discovery" yes?

I know he wanted to go after "the Duran Duran money" with "The Screams of Passion" but it's a bad Duran Duran song – Big Thing-era or something.

I wonder if this approach - writing for other artists/creating+producing for other acts - was something he picked up on from George Clinton or what. it seems like it was an extremely rare tack to take among his peers (MJ, Madonna, Springsteen)

I can feel it in my spiritual hat (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 17:44 (thirteen years ago)

In 2010, Martika, now going under the stage name Vida Edit, starred as Lolly Pop and co-produced a web-based television action program J8ded,[citation needed]

MJ and Springsteen did plenty of writing and producing for other artists though.

don't really know what to make of this information

this is news to me...? well apart from that "Somebody's Watching Me" song

I can feel it in my spiritual hat (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

fwiw Bria Valente's "Another Boy" is probably my favorite song Prince has written in the last few years

need to hear a lot of these, the one i'm most curious to hear is The Family, was that album ever even issued on CD or iTunes or anything?

some dude, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 17:47 (thirteen years ago)

Springsteen - Donna Summer, Gary "U.S." Bonds, Patti Smith.
MJ - Rebbie Jackson, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder.

9yo me could not believe this was allowed on television

I can feel it in my spiritual hat (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 17:49 (thirteen years ago)

Springsteen ... Patti Smith.

wait I thought Patti Smith wrote Because the Night

I can feel it in my spiritual hat (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

No, he wrote it and she changed a couple of lines.

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 17:50 (thirteen years ago)

Natalie Cole also recorded a Springsteen song ("Pink Cadillac") although technically he didn't write it for her

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 17:53 (thirteen years ago)

man, I can't believe Madhouse took a song into the R&B top five.

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 17:53 (thirteen years ago)

minor omission from poll options:

btw Madhouse is Prince and Eric Leeds, so "it" shouldn't really get a nod.

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 17:54 (thirteen years ago)

yeah reading the 33 1/3 on Born In The USA kind of opened my eyes up to how many songs Bruce wrote for/gave to other artists, i had no idea.

lol @ Shakey instantly going to "where did Prince get the idea? George Clinton of course!"

some dude, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 17:54 (thirteen years ago)

well there's plenty of other precedents but Clinton obviously figured pretty largely in Prince's development

I can feel it in my spiritual hat (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 17:55 (thirteen years ago)

it doesn't matter how appropriately it's deployed from time to time, you bringing up Funkadelic whenever possible is just lol

some dude, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 18:02 (thirteen years ago)

Its funny but i kinda think that Prince might of been a side project of Wendy and Lisa...

The Pastiche Liberation Front (sonnyboy), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 23:47 (thirteen years ago)

Jill Jones but The Time will win.

Vendo Caramelos A Veces Sin Dinero (Capitaine Jay Vee), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 00:21 (thirteen years ago)

Jill Jones as well.

James Brown did this a lot as well. I presume the thinking is: well if you've got a great band and you've got some spare recording time...might as well be Motown.

Jedmond, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

well well well

Jedmond, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 02:22 (thirteen years ago)

The Jill Jones album is indeed awesome, but sadly it remains too obscure (and long out of print) to get the recognition it deserves.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 12:02 (thirteen years ago)

Though I have lots of love for the album he did with Chaka Khan too... It's certainly better than his own albums of the late 90s.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 12:04 (thirteen years ago)

About a half dozen serious contenders here

don't tell me you haven't seen graffiti bridge shakey (she plays an angel)(an angel morris day and prince try(?) to fuck).

balls, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 21:44 (thirteen years ago)

I think Ta Mara was actually a Jesse Johnson side-project, but I've still got love for this one:

Prostetnic Vogon Limbaugh (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 21:44 (thirteen years ago)

oh I have totally seen Graffiti Bridge. several times.

I lol'd at the bit in Per Nilson's DMSR book where he describes Madonna telling Prince that the idea for Grafitti Bridge was "fucking stupid"

I can feel it in my spiritual hat (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 21:47 (thirteen years ago)

tempted to vote for TC b/c of 'Round & Round,' but overall it has to be The Time

õ_Ò (Pillbox), Thursday, 8 September 2011 00:00 (thirteen years ago)

The Time is my favorite band ever.

The Family record is an odd duck. Doesn't sound incredibly Prince-like, and the vocals are often mannered to the point of annoyance, but I still enjoy it. "Mutiny" and "High Fashion" pop into my head with some regularity.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 8 September 2011 11:41 (thirteen years ago)

wow, awesome midi guitar (i assume?) solo in that ta mara video

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Thursday, 8 September 2011 16:14 (thirteen years ago)

listening to the Time's s/t album for the first time in awhile, man this is awesome.

this is miles better than a lot of Parade or Around The World In A Day tracks imo. he was nothing like as good without them.
