velvet underground - reloaded (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 19:15 (thirteen years ago)

i'm really torn

still processing some of the newer ones like "dragon" and "iced honey"

i feel like "little dog" has really been there for me through the last month or so, but i dunno, "junior dad" is amazing too...

"cheat on me" seems like the weak link, if you could say there is a weak link to this album, which you CAN'T

"Nothing is inconceivable" goes well for the naysayers who denied Metallica and Lou would team up.

Neil S, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 19:39 (thirteen years ago)

voted 4 frustration, tho junior dad is a good choice too!

markers, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 19:51 (thirteen years ago)

"This," concludes Lou, "is the best thing I ever did. And I did it with the best group I could possibly find on the planet. By definition, everybody involved was honest. This has come into the world pure. We pushed as far as we possibly could within the realms of reality."

3. Pumping Blood
4. Mistress Dread
5. Iced Honey

well they were real, in the context of the planetary system that they were released in at the time. said releases being prior to the creation of the new lou reed/metallica planetary system in which we now reside

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. Metallica and Lou Reed playing "Junior Dad" for twenty minutes.

Neil S, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 18:04 (thirteen years ago)

Lotta negatively-connotative words up there - dread, cheat, frustration - that wouldn't seem out-of-place on any previous Lou or Metallica opus. "Dragon" is the only one that doesn't call to mind any song title of theirs that I can think of offhand.

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 19:40 (thirteen years ago)

got to vote for "junior dad" because it's obviously a scratch title for their junior boys/gay dad-inspired song that they never improved on

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 19:47 (thirteen years ago)

I knew it. All along, Lars Ulrich was the drummer for Gay Dad.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 19:49 (thirteen years ago)

Wonder how the results of the song titles poll will jibe with a poll of the actual songs once we've heard them

Lee547 (Lee626), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 21:53 (thirteen years ago)

damn Ned beat me to a "drummer for Junior Dad joke"

Battlestar Gracián (crüt), Wednesday, 7 September 2011 21:54 (thirteen years ago)

Gay Dad, the greatest disappointment.

Junior Dad (19:28)

Blimey

Euripides Trousers (Tom D.), Thursday, 8 September 2011 09:02 (thirteen years ago)

Bleedin' nora!

I was going to bagsy "Cheat on me" but.. Eleven minutes?

.....

.. yeah, I could do that..

Mark G, Thursday, 8 September 2011 09:03 (thirteen years ago)

Something like Junior Dad needs someone to mix individual sounds from ILX contributors to make a whole 19 mins.

I have no idea if that's possible, but.

Mark G, Thursday, 8 September 2011 09:04 (thirteen years ago)

No pressure, but that's apparently the song that made Metallica cry.

Geirge Hongriot (NickB), Thursday, 8 September 2011 09:08 (thirteen years ago)

Maybe 20 minutes of taunting the weakest member?

Geirge Hongriot (NickB), Thursday, 8 September 2011 09:08 (thirteen years ago)

Who is the weakest Metallicer btw?

Geirge Hongriot (NickB), Thursday, 8 September 2011 09:09 (thirteen years ago)

Metallica are always fucking crying, bet you Sterling Morrison never did!

Euripides Trousers (Tom D.), Thursday, 8 September 2011 09:10 (thirteen years ago)

... well not over some song Lou'd just written

Euripides Trousers (Tom D.), Thursday, 8 September 2011 09:13 (thirteen years ago)

Did I ever tell yer what happened when I met Sterl?

(knowing full well I have..)

Mark G, Thursday, 8 September 2011 09:42 (thirteen years ago)

Did you cry? You haven't told us... well you haven't told me... I've heard about Marc Bolan and the England cricket team

Euripides Trousers (Tom D.), Thursday, 8 September 2011 09:44 (thirteen years ago)

be right back...

Mark G, Thursday, 8 September 2011 09:46 (thirteen years ago)

What's the matter with you, eh? Gotten no respect?
What do you think you can do, when you're looking so sad?
C'mon junior dad, cos it's not so bad
Ahh shaddup you face

Geirge Hongriot (NickB), Thursday, 8 September 2011 10:00 (thirteen years ago)

Nope, I can't find it...

OK, here goes..

Basically, Moe Tucker was touring the UK with her band, I'd seen them the year before in London, but now she's playing my home town with Sterling in the band.

So, after the gig, they are all hanging out, I have a chat with Moe, she's very nice and I mention that they didn't play "Guess I'm falling in love". "Well, we can't play every song every night", she starts, then thinks and says to the band "actually, we haven't played that one for a long time!" like they're gonna fix that one for next time. Funnily enough, next time I saw them they were in the reunited VU, and it was the one song Lou wasn't giving his "oh I have sung this so many times over the years" default performance.

Anyway, back at the aftergig chat, Sterling happens along, they both signed my gig ticket and Sterl starts telling some tales. I mention something, at which point Sterl just stares at me. A 2 second silence, then he carries on.

For years, I thought him a stroppy geezer or wot, but then someone (on here, or maybe some other place I related this story) mentions about how he was a lecturer in English, etc. At which point I realised: Of course, disruptive student! Stare at person until they shut up, then carry on with the lecture.

Mark G, Thursday, 8 September 2011 10:01 (thirteen years ago)

Always struck me as a no-nonsense sorta dude. Wish I'd met him, 2 second stare or not.

Euripides Trousers (Tom D.), Thursday, 8 September 2011 10:07 (thirteen years ago)

But, yes, "Whassa matter Mark, eh? Gotta no respect?"

Euripides Trousers (Tom D.), Thursday, 8 September 2011 10:08 (thirteen years ago)

Well, even when I thought him a 'strophead', I thought "Hey, he was in a band with Lou Reed, of course he's gonna be."

Mark G, Thursday, 8 September 2011 10:21 (thirteen years ago)

Damn, wish I'd waited for those timings before voting for "Dragon"!

"Junior Dad" - 19 minutes of Metallica Machine Music! (I hope I hope...)

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 8 September 2011 10:49 (thirteen years ago)

there will be a poll of best LULU song lengths coming soon, have no fear

tylerw, Thursday, 8 September 2011 16:39 (thirteen years ago)

Got to be Kirk Hammett surely?

Neil S, Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:02 (thirteen years ago)

Meantime, helping things along:

ILX pre-covers LULU -- the Lou Reed/Metallica album

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 17:26 (thirteen years ago)

Sterl starts telling some tales. I mention something, at which point Sterl just stares at me. A 2 second silence, then he carries on.

I should clarify, that the tales were being told to a group of us, about 6 people or so. He didn't stare me out during a one-to-one chat.

(The chat with Moe was a 121 at that point)...
