maybe the angels line being an "oddly beatific vision (that) is an act of self-determination" is stretching it considering there's a lot of ass and tits in the leaked music video, but still!

If someone told me this was the new Rebecca Black song, I probably would believe them.
― MarkoP, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 20:29 (thirteen years ago)
But the moment in the song which always catches me isn’t any electronic manipulation — the production is too blank and anonymous to provide even those cheap thrills — but a phrase in the second verse. “I’ma burn it out tonight/It’s goin’ down by live via satellite/And all I see is angels in my eyes/And the buzz got me way up in the sky.” Wait, angels in my eyes? The phrase stands out for not being just one more in what is otherwise a laundry list of club promoter’s cliches, for edging even briefly into metaphor and symbolic language beyond the dull metonymy by which “Maybach” means “money.” All she sees are angels in her eyes? What could that possibly mean?

This would sound great with the vocal set against something more austere, like the XX. I could imagine it having the same haunting effect as "I Want to Dance with Numbers."
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 21:56 (thirteen years ago)
"I Wanna Dance with Numbers," that is.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 21:57 (thirteen years ago)
this would sound great with different music, and a different singer, and different lyrics, and a different melody
in fact, if this was completely unlike how it is now, it could be great

Srsly if this were just some anonymous Eurodiva no one would give enough of a shit to hate on this.
Love that Terius, who can be lazy at the best of times, clearly cobbled this together in about thirty seconds because he wanted to hang out in the studio with Kim Kardashian.

TBF if this was some anonymous Eurodiva, the singing would be better and we never would have heard it in the first place.
I will say I thought I liked the song when I was watching a snippet of the video but hearing the song in isolation shows me that I just like watching sweaty Kim crawl across the floor.
I mean, this is no "Popozau". Ruminate on that for a while.

yeah this song's technically atrocious but whatever, it's the old cassie fan club charms
tbh if you havent got bigger fish to hold in contempt ur just plain doing this music thing wrong really
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 7 September 2011 22:45 (thirteen years ago)
There's something about her flat, resigned voice and lines like "I'm going to work like I'm paying my bills" which make this song seem oddly poignant to me - like, this poor girl is just going through the motions and doesn't really know how to enjoy it any more, she's using partying to escape her problems but it just isn't working.
― ha ha ha ha jack my swag (boxedjoy), Thursday, 8 September 2011 11:18 (thirteen years ago)
I heard she loosely based it on "Lysistrata," actually.
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 8 September 2011 11:34 (thirteen years ago)
seriously these lyrics are just like random ass phrases thrown together with zero thought and you guys try to ascribe meaning to them like they are some sort of important text.
you guys should come to my house and read my refrigerator magnet poetry, shit is oddly poignant
this is like the dance music version of like underground hipsters cats liking the shaggs or song poems, shit like that
her voice sounds flat because she can't sing for shit and so they digitally processed that shit to death! she sound resigned because she's a completely vapid boring person, have you not seen her show?
i realize how huffy and puffy i'm getting abt this but honestly this fascination with the Emperor's New Ho is unreal stupid
― the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 8 September 2011 11:51 (thirteen years ago)
I really tried to come to this with an open mind. I don't watch her show and I don't care to know much about her, but what I do know - ugh. That said, this girl lacks an ounce of charisma, at least in her voice. She could be singing about roadkill for all I know.
I was able to find some high points in the Paris album, but this is worthless.

"stars are blind" inspired my favourite ilx post of all time. of all time!
yeah! well you've also got "suicide" as merely "stupid pride", a somewhat hardline xtian sentiment which that indeed daring pantheism x astrology "gods are crazy / stars are blind" double whammy immediately vexes. and then yr everyday manichaean "be the devil and angel too" chaser. paris milton more like.

cf, from that jonathan bogart post linked upthread, this re: "jam (turn it up)"
Where other Will-to-Party club songs emphasize debauchery, sexualization, and hooking up to the degree that the club might as well be a Roman orgy without the architecture, this song claims to see nothing but symbols of purity and transcendence. People dancing in the world of this song are neither predator nor prey, without the usual commodification of the body, and in fact barely corporeal: they are semi-divine, perfect, celestial, inviolable. It may be the Platonic ideal of a party; it may be the eschaton.
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 1 November 2011 14:07 (thirteen years ago)
I think I may have reached my limit when it comes to music writing that strives desperately to dress up a banal song as some kind of paradigm-shifting philosophical breakthrough. Eschaton. Get a grip.
