To quote from the relevant bit of the thread -- and a key requirement in particular:

Can this be the next ILX "pre-covered" album? Please?

― Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Wednesday, September 7, 2011 6:13 PM (Yesterday)

haha i'm into it

―  (gr8080), Wednesday, September 7, 2011 6:14 PM (Yesterday)

i was wondering how that hadn't been suggested earlier

― Speculum (some dude), Wednesday, September 7, 2011 6:21 PM (Yesterday)

one requirement should be that the fake songs have the same running time as the real songs

― Speculum (some dude), Wednesday, September 7, 2011 6:21 PM (Yesterday)

OTM^^

―  (gr8080), Wednesday, September 7, 2011 6:32 PM (Yesterday)

So, when is it out?

How long have we got?

And, where do we get the 'running times' from?

― Mark G, Thursday, September 8, 2011 1:58 AM (8 hours ago)

― Geirge Hongriot (NickB), Thursday, September 8, 2011 2:01 AM (8 hours ago)

Junior Dad (19:28)

Blimey

― Euripides Trousers (Tom D.), Thursday, September 8, 2011 2:02 AM (8 hours ago)

Bleedin' nora!

I was going to bagsy "Cheat on me" but.. Eleven minutes?

.....

.. yeah, I could do that..

― Mark G, Thursday, September 8, 2011 2:03 AM (8 hours ago)

Something like Junior Dad needs someone to mix individual sounds from ILX contributors to make a whole 19 mins.

I have no idea if that's possible, but.

― Mark G, Thursday, September 8, 2011 2:04 AM (8 hours ago)

Claim your songs now.

(EDIT October 12: So this was all done and you can see the results below but here's the basic information:

i got "little dog"

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:41 (fourteen years ago)

i'll do brandenburg gate.

tylerw, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:42 (fourteen years ago)

iced honey for me.

charlie h, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:43 (fourteen years ago)

oh god, you guys MUST 'leak' this a few days before the real one. incredible. *bookmarks thread*

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:44 (fourteen years ago)

I'll do "The View"

polyphonic, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:51 (fourteen years ago)

Can it be an extended cover of this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RpXTISw_Huw&ob=av3e

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

dudes, going forward with this project, I really want to make sure that by definition, everybody involved is honest and that we push as far as we possibly can within the realms of reality. Just keep that in mind.

tylerw, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:55 (fourteen years ago)

Right, I officially bagsy "cheat on me"...

Mark G, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

also make sure it’s maybe the best thing done by anyone, ever.

Neil S, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:58 (fourteen years ago)

I mean, I'm ready with inspiration: I listened to my mono "Sister Ray" three days ago!

Mark G, Thursday, 8 September 2011 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

Okay, so a running list, and keeping everyone honest:

Brandenburg Gate (4:19) -- tylerw
The View (5:17) -- polyphonic
Pumping Blood (7:24)
Mistress Dread (6:52)
Iced Honey (4:36) -- charlie h
Cheat On Me (11:26) -- Mark G
Frustration (8:33)
Little Dog (8:01) -- upper mississippi sh@kedown
Dragon (11:08)
Junior Dad (19:28)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

I'm almost tempted to claim Junior Dad and do it as some extended drone thing!

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 8 September 2011 19:49 (fourteen years ago)

I'm wavering on volunteering for Junior Dad, it'll be the "experimental" track though, not dissimilar to the track Lars' dad wasn't keen on in Some Kind Of Monster.

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\etc (Matt #2), Thursday, 8 September 2011 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

In fact, count me in for Junior Dad.

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\etc (Matt #2), Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:00 (fourteen years ago)

Done. Survive.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

what the actual deadline? "Before October 31" is a little nebulous

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

mistress dread!

sarahel, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:03 (fourteen years ago)

Let's say October 10th for now. Personally I'd aim for earlier, who knows when this thing will leak.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:09 (fourteen years ago)

Assuming sarahel's post was a claim:

Brandenburg Gate (4:19) -- tylerw
The View (5:17) -- polyphonic
Pumping Blood (7:24)
Mistress Dread (6:52) -- sarahel
Iced Honey (4:36) -- charlie h
Cheat On Me (11:26) -- Mark G
Frustration (8:33)
Little Dog (8:01) -- upper mississippi sh@kedown
Dragon (11:08)
Junior Dad (19:28) -- Matt #2

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:09 (fourteen years ago)

I wanna do "Dragon"

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:10 (fourteen years ago)

Done. "Frustration" and "Pumping Blood" to go -- as Elvis Telecom brought up the whole idea in the first place I say he has to have one of those.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

it was indeed: not sure whether "mistress dread" will be something that sounds vaguely like dub reggae or something that sounds vaguely like an italian horror movie soundtrack

sarahel, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

I'm in for "Frustration"

Stockhausen's Ekranoplan Quartet (Elvis Telecom), Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

I'm down for "Pumping Blood".

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

Annnnnnnd done:

Brandenburg Gate (4:19) -- tylerw
The View (5:17) -- polyphonic
Pumping Blood (7:24) -- Pleasant Plains
Mistress Dread (6:52) -- sarahel
Iced Honey (4:36) -- charlie h
Cheat On Me (11:26) -- Mark G
Frustration (8:33) -- Elvis Telecom
Little Dog (8:01) -- upper mississippi sh@kedown
Dragon (11:08) -- DJP
Junior Dad (19:28) -- Matt #2

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

if this will help anyone, it is a bad instrumental cover of metallica's version of whiskey in the jar-roooo that can be repurposed:
http://www.mediafire.com/?9ur8ph6u34aktuf

Philip Nunez, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:22 (fourteen years ago)

I've got the first track that frees up when someone gets "too busy" to do this.

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

thinking about sampling Lars' hawaiian shirt rant from the Some Kind of Monster dvd extras

sarahel, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

Noted re: n/a as backup.

Okay rules as such, since I love herding cats or something:

* Deadline is October 10th at absolute latest, earlier if possible; just send it as an attachment to my e-mail, mp3 or FLAC or whatever.

* Per some dude's note above, songs must be exactly the same length as the real thing

* Otherwise, you know the drill

We also need an exact album title, cover art and figuring out the best way to host and share this (SoundCloud, presumably?)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:24 (fourteen years ago)

could you ilx webmail that e-mail?

sarahel, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

Oh lord, it's no secret -- ned at kuci dot org

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

put me down as second backup I guess

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Thursday, 8 September 2011 20:29 (fourteen years ago)

Anticipating this more than the real thing TBH.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Thursday, 8 September 2011 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

So fucking psyched for LITTLE DOG

Geirge Hongriot (NickB), Thursday, 8 September 2011 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

Let's just hope Lars and Lou won't sue your asses...

Mule, Thursday, 8 September 2011 21:29 (fourteen years ago)

Should I listen to the older version of Junior Dad that's up on youtube or just wing it? y/n

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\etc (Matt #2), Thursday, 8 September 2011 21:32 (fourteen years ago)

Don't. It wouldn't be a proper pre-cover if you did.

Mule, Thursday, 8 September 2011 21:34 (fourteen years ago)

You should use the lyrics though.

Inevitable stupid samba mix (chap), Friday, 9 September 2011 02:52 (fourteen years ago)

album of the year

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 9 September 2011 03:01 (fourteen years ago)

i'm very pumped about how "iced honey" is turning out so far.

charlie h, Friday, 9 September 2011 07:57 (fourteen years ago)

Saw this too late :-/

Put me down as back-up if anyone else can't make it!

Vision Kreayshawn Newsun (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 9 September 2011 11:35 (fourteen years ago)

Almost sounds like we could do an entire second version of this!

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 9 September 2011 12:42 (fourteen years ago)

deluxe edition? bonus choose-yr-own song titles!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Friday, 9 September 2011 12:48 (fourteen years ago)

imo for some of the longer tracks you could probably just take the contributions of 2 posters and edit them together (as incongruously as possible, of course)

some dude, Friday, 9 September 2011 13:14 (fourteen years ago)

Psyched for this!

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 9 September 2011 13:25 (fourteen years ago)

i'd say it's within the realms of reality for people to do different versions of the same song. as long as as everyone is honest by definition.

tylerw, Friday, 9 September 2011 14:37 (fourteen years ago)

If we want to do a companion version let's go to town. And why not? LULUse Your Confusion I and II.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 September 2011 14:40 (fourteen years ago)

it should be like that Junkie XL album with the AM and PM discs

Tal Berkowitz - Vaccine advocate (DJP), Friday, 9 September 2011 14:41 (fourteen years ago)

Damn straight!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 September 2011 14:43 (fourteen years ago)

theosophy b. hawkins (donna rouge), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

All right, straight on to VOL. II.

'Brandenburg Gate' works as a great intro, nice groove.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:11 (fourteen years ago)

Love the guitar on 'Pumping Blood'!

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:18 (fourteen years ago)

okay II's "Little Dog" is also great

wrestlingisreal420 (crüt), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:25 (fourteen years ago)

Oooh, 'Mistress Dread', some very mid-80s Sonic Youth vibes here.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:25 (fourteen years ago)

i couldn't decide between PUMP ING BLUD or PUMP INB LOOD, decided the former was funnier

congratulations (n/a), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:26 (fourteen years ago)

Indeed :)

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

oh my god "Dragon" II is killing me

do not wake the dragon (DJP), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:28 (fourteen years ago)

J3ff T. sent it in with apologies; for a random improv I think it's perfect!

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:29 (fourteen years ago)

Quick, point me to a few albums that sound like 'Mistress Dread'. I want to listen to this stuff all week!

Sean, did you overdose on Chill Out before you recorded yours?

do not wake the dragon (DJP), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:47 (fourteen years ago)

lol, sean's is a good way to end this.

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:56 (fourteen years ago)

This was probably the most fun I ever had recording

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

loving the 808+synth coda on Little Dog I

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 18:11 (fourteen years ago)

Thx, actually a alesis sr-16, very functional but not particularly prized early 90s drum machine, piano was recorded with a handheld digital recorder and synth is an odd ball cheap yamaha I picked up for 50 on craigslist

It's a little ” loose” because I could not figure out how to make loops so all the parts are played live

the 500 gats of bartholomew thuggins (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 18:30 (fourteen years ago)

losing my shit at disc II's "the view"

theosophy b. hawkins (donna rouge), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 18:36 (fourteen years ago)

Ivre kicking off II just as good as "Civil War" kicked off UYIII. Spoken interludes and everything.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 18:54 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks for the kind words, the apology had more to do with people having to listen to 11 minutes of my voice. But it was fun.

Midnight Maniac (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

Sean, did you overdose on Chill Out before you recorded yours?

Hah, it was probably more like Lustm0rd!

Fun fact: the very beginning of mine actually features heavily processed slowed-down loop of the main riff from "Sister Ray". Not that you could tell, anymore!

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:30 (fourteen years ago)

"J3ff T. sent it in with apologies; for a random improv I think it's perfect!"
the delivery on "then... you would have... a lot of dragons" kills me!

hey, not to be all george-lucasy, but would it be weird if i added backing tracks to da croupier's for a special edition release?

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

hey, not to be all george-lucasy, but would it be weird if i added backing tracks to da croupier's for a special edition release?

That's up to the croup.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

I have CD reviews to do and writing to get done, but what the hell, I've already slept until noon today, may as well listen to this thing.

Midnight Maniac (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:01 (fourteen years ago)

You will find it will make writing those reviews much easier, as in, "Why the hell is this tenth-rate lame black metal wannabe band nowhere near as good as ILX Pre-Covers LULU?"

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:03 (fourteen years ago)

I was thinking about looping the instrumental of "Tom's Diner" under mine eventually as well

da croupier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

so basically, I approve if the backing sounds line the DNA version of "Tom's Diner"

da croupier, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:05 (fourteen years ago)

rats! i was thinking more fantasy by mariah carey meets slayer...

Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 20:16 (fourteen years ago)

can we lock this thread since there's an official release thread now?
