'party rock anthem' is really charmless and half assed, 'i gotta feeling' is pretty well pieced together and it's biggest flaw, it's 'naffness' is arguably it's biggest strength, definitely one of those handful of black eyed peas that i wish were just a little bit better (usually i wish they were less ott busy - basement jaxx barely had what it takes to pull that off (and that's arguable), bep sure as fuck don't) but find myself enjoying if not actively seeking out anyway. somehow the passable songs make me despise bep even more than the outright abominations.

party rock anthem!

you've got male (jim in glasgow), Sunday, 11 September 2011 00:37 (fourteen years ago)

ie 'party rock anthem' just seems a really dull sign of where we are now, 'i gotta feeling' is how we got there.

balls, Sunday, 11 September 2011 00:40 (fourteen years ago)

balls otm

some dude, Sunday, 11 September 2011 00:41 (fourteen years ago)

'I got a feeling' is so forced though! and there's some choice reverb on a bleep.

owenf, Sunday, 11 September 2011 00:44 (fourteen years ago)

i mentally pair "Party Rock Anthem" more with "Give Me Everything," the song it replaced at #1 and resembled in many ways, except "Give" has better singing, rapping, and production and everything else than "Anthem"

some dude, Sunday, 11 September 2011 00:45 (fourteen years ago)

i really like party rock anthem

markers, Sunday, 11 September 2011 00:48 (fourteen years ago)

I pair the two of these together because they've reduced partying to the idea of partying

dayo, Sunday, 11 September 2011 00:50 (fourteen years ago)

i think the most actual pleasure i have gotten out of bep (outside of fergie's 'no brainer' in planet terror) is one night my sister and i had a nasty/stupid argument and we're riding out to some relatives in the country to do xmas, sitting in the dark in her car in silence, seething, and listening to npr and this guy is interviewing will i am, and at one point (tbf the host had kinda spurred him down this train of thought) will i am is talking about the diversity of styles he works in and says 'if you were to hear my humps and let's get it started and boom boom pow and don't phunk w/ my heart and i gotta feeling back to back you would have NO IDEA that any of those were by the same group' and my sister and i both burst out laughing at the stupidity of this statement, any enmity between us dissolved. will i am's hack formulas and deluded ego save xmas.

balls, Sunday, 11 September 2011 00:52 (fourteen years ago)

will i am has made pure shit so consistently that makes party rock anthem easier to everlook too

balls, Sunday, 11 September 2011 01:13 (fourteen years ago)

i feel like there's such a self-loathing just under the surface with LMFAO -- like they're fucking scions of Motown and they're making the dumbest garbage with the laziest hooks and defiantly mornic rapping and most cynically dancefloor-ready beats possible, probably at first just to get laid and not just be bored rich kids but be famous bored rich kids, and now it worked a little too well and we all have to deal with their horrible bullshit

some dude, Sunday, 11 September 2011 01:13 (fourteen years ago)

i mean the last time a Gordy forced their way onto the pop charts at least we got a memorable MJ hook out of the deal

some dude, Sunday, 11 September 2011 01:15 (fourteen years ago)

I am kind of shocked at this unanimous consensus between about.com and DJ JEFF HUNTER that IGF is the greatest party song ever made

dayo, Sunday, 11 September 2011 01:16 (fourteen years ago)

it's kinda amazing how universal these lists are. i think if you were playing, say, a wedding, in liverpool tonight then the biggest tunes would be 'sex on fire', 'use somebody', 'human' (the killers rather than the human league, unfortunately), 'party rock anthem' and 'i gotta feeling'. ''a town called malice' too. something by the stereophonics would prob be in there also. it amazes me how banal the general public's taste is, you'd think michael jackson or stevie wonder or something would get people up but they're nothing compared to 'build me up buttercup' or 'dignity' by deacon blue. totally derailed thread but all these songs remind me of each other. of these i prefer 'party rock anthem', mate of mine who djs in one of lpool's top bars says it reminds him of bizznizz 'don't miss the party line'. don't hear that myself.

second only to popcorn (or something), Sunday, 11 September 2011 01:58 (fourteen years ago)

pretty sure "don't stop til you get enough" still gets the party going

some dude, Sunday, 11 September 2011 02:28 (fourteen years ago)

some dude, when was the last party you went to

dayo, Sunday, 11 September 2011 02:32 (fourteen years ago)

parties in general, parties where people dance, or weddings where people dance (which is what i was talking about in response to 'or something')?

some dude, Sunday, 11 September 2011 02:33 (fourteen years ago)

all of the above

dayo, Sunday, 11 September 2011 02:34 (fourteen years ago)

if it was michael jackson it would most likely be 'thriller' or 'billie jean'. people don't seem to like being surprised.

second only to popcorn (or something), Sunday, 11 September 2011 02:44 (fourteen years ago)

a hurrrr hurrrr (history mayne), Sunday, 11 September 2011 10:06 (fourteen years ago)

it amazes me how banal the general public's taste is

just for once I'm not gonna drop Marlon Brando scrawling "exterminate the brutes", i'm just gonna suggest that a lot of personal assumptions are crammed into this phrase and that i don't feel like you're trying to understand what a general public is, or how individuals within that category might relate to music or partying, or what the point of taste is, or why some music is more popular than other music, or how attitudes to mass culture can shade into a weak solipsism that proposes that most "other people" are stupider than we are, somehow

Stories from Hull City, Stories from Hull FC (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 11 September 2011 10:41 (fourteen years ago)

DJ JEFF HUNTER is clearly a wedding dj, and that list is the canon you might as well get worked up about people liking to watch stupid sitcoms or buy oversized suv's or something as try to deny that that list is the (ugly) truth

anyway i'll take PRA at this point cause i haven't had to play it 8000 times yet - bep's been the go to party-in-a-can song for how many years running already? also the beat's a hair better and those harmonies are kinda nice. i'm sure i'll get sick of it soon enough though

messiahwannabe, Sunday, 11 September 2011 10:57 (fourteen years ago)

"instant party from a can" is a really good descriptor for these.

i hate "i gotta feeling" more but only cuz it's way more ubiquitous - don't think i've ever heard "party rock anthem" in the wild and in fact had to look it up to work out what it was. it's probably the worse song but i blame "i gotta feeling" for so much.

i asked for "HALF" a glass of wine, because i am TEMPERENT (lex pretend), Sunday, 11 September 2011 11:13 (fourteen years ago)

the general public can have really good taste fyi. pop is in a really bad place right now and i haven't quite worked out why, but i'd sooner blame a panicking and conservative music industry.

H.P, Wednesday, 14 February 2024 23:20 (one year ago)

The only really really bad part of PRA is “you’re naked now!” Which I have a lot to say about when you consider how many little kids’ parties this song soundtracked.

CEO Greedwagon (Neanderthal), Thursday, 15 February 2024 04:51 (one year ago)

The best thing about either of these songs is Clyde Carson rapping (on ILM-approved hyphy classic "Lightweight Jammin") the line b****es catchin feelings like will.i.am. Just a super gratifying arrangement of syllables, even if he grocery-bags the punchline a second later by singsonging "Tonight's gonna be a good night."

The second best thing is "Sorry For Party Rocking." Not the actual song, just the title/concept.

The king of the demo (bernard snowy), Thursday, 15 February 2024 12:04 (one year ago)

I chuckle everytime I think about the synth breakdown in party rock. Just feels like something Tim Heidelberg would come up with, with zoom in/zoom + spinning of the camera from 45 to 315 degrees on a 240p phone camera filming a woman tweaking on a green screen of a raging party backdrop.

H.P, Thursday, 15 February 2024 12:18 (one year ago)

The thing about I Gotta Feeling is the touch of mournful nostalgia underneath. Like, you're pre-loaded for wistful reminisces about that girl whose number you wish you got, or that last Four Loko that you wish you drank. In seriousness though, the song often brings a tear to my eye. An optimistic song from a time long gone, after which we've experienced some not-very-good nights indeed.

peace, man, Thursday, 15 February 2024 12:34 (one year ago)

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (Do it)
Friday, Saturday, Saturday to Sunday (Do it)

"I Gotta Feeling" is the song you play to kick off the bar mitzvah. "Party Rock" is what you play when the sugar and pizza has kicked in and the kids are going wiiiiiiiiild.

Put another way, when "I Gotta Feeling" comes on we joke how stupid it is, but when "Party Rock" comes on we don't need to say anything, because we know it. You could even say we feel it.

dyl, Friday, 16 February 2024 13:48 (one year ago)

my main problem with “party rock anthem” is they sing the chorus like they’re trying to calm everybody down instead of light everyone up. I think I prefer that shitty Macklemore “the ceiling can’t hold us” thing.

brimstead, Friday, 16 February 2024 16:25 (one year ago)

lmao

"everyone, please calm down. contrary to the rumors spreading earlier, party rock is indeed still in the house tonight and has not been postponed as incorrectly stated earlier"

CEO Greedwagon (Neanderthal), Friday, 16 February 2024 16:29 (one year ago)

It’s to calm them before the beat drops, so they can bring it back up again for the “shake that” part. It basically ensures the shaking of that.
Afaict that is

Piggy Lepton (La Lechera), Friday, 16 February 2024 17:56 (one year ago)

I used to run a summer camp, and the camp song/dance during the morning meeting was I Gotta Feeling. I would play it through the PA via a cable to the audio jack on my phone (I did not participate in the dance or in fact get up on stage at all except for certificate presentations at the end of the course.) The kids seemed to like it fine, I didn't hate it, actually I had never heard it before as was mostly out of the country from 2002 to 2016 and it sounded i dunno, acceptable. Then one day I got in my car and my phone connected via bluetooth at an uncomfortably high volume and with the improved quality of the audio I could hear for the first time how tinny, hollow and cheap-sounding it was.
