here's a pretty exhaustive thread

a headphones recommendation thread

for what you're talking about i like the Sony MDR V6 - very comfy, great sound

xp me too. i think there are a few headphones threads. I'd like over-ear making-music ones too - preferably wireless ones. Anyone know if Wireless headphones cause any side effects if, say, producing on a computer?

don't get wireless ones

when you say making music will you want to have them on while you record your voice or other instruments? you can get two types, closed back and open back. open back ones let more sound out, so wouldn't be best if you're wanting to record with a microphone.

yeah i will be making electronic stuff, playing guitar, singing, also day-to-day listening to music, which is why i'd love to be able to walk about without being chained to my PC at home..

Sennheiser are pretty good, they last as well (had mine for over ten years). Closed back might be better for recording, but it's a matter of personal preference. Mine are open back, but I'm not much of a singer and don't have the volume in them cranked while recording vocals. The type that surround the ear are essential either way. Also a model with an easily replaceable cord, because that's the bit that goes wrong first.

industry standards are the beyerdynamic dt-100s, altho for £200 you could get a better version, the DT-150s are nice, i have those. they're nice and accurate, they don't flatter the sound too much, comfortable during long periods of time.

i'd say you get those then spend the rest on a decent headphone amp or interface or what have you

sennheisers are great, i go to them when i'm doing dance/dj stuff, i have the 280s i think

i've never heard a pair of wireless headphones that are any good, sorry :( maybe they do exist

Crackle Box, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 15:29 (fourteen years ago)

Beyerdynamics (closed 880s in the office, open 990s at home) all the way. Love them furry cups. They have started to smell a bit though.

straightola, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 15:29 (fourteen years ago)

they're cheap to replace! we have about 10 pairs at ours so i'm constantly replacing them

Beyerdynamic DTs do have the advantage of seemingly every. single. component. being available for purchase separately.

my mixing engineer recommended the grado sr80s a few months ago, and i've been really happy with them (under $100 too)

Sennheiser PXC310BT is hands down the best wireless headphone out there. I am SHOCKED at how good they sound - I really can't tell the difference in casual use between these and wired headphones. Of course, they'll run you around $250 but they serve so many purposes - they're also noise-cancelling, perfect for air travel. They're on-the-ear and a tight fit but comfortable.

I feel like there's one two things you need to think about: open or closed, how comfortable they are. after that, just pick one from a reputable manufacturer - I think every headphone between $100-200 from a reputable manufacturer that doesn't have a 2 star average on amazon will be good. every headphone manufacturer has their partisans. the best would be if you could go to some shop and try them all on w/ music that you like... but that's not always possible.

Grado sr80 ftw

sorry for new thread, i just didn't know how current the info on an older thread would be and figured this was the best way to deal with that. haw.

i wish i could afford the daft punk tron headphones....really!

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Thursday, 15 September 2011 14:23 (fourteen years ago)

They're probably crap - most headphones with a big artist/producer name attached are.

serve soup without tasting it (snoball), Thursday, 15 September 2011 14:39 (fourteen years ago)

i doubt that they're CRAP - but they are surely overpriced

get some AKG K 240s. ebay for about 100, have great reviews everywhere, and reproduce sound better than my brother's audiotechnicas which cost twice as much.

lifestyle porn (the kid), Sunday, 18 September 2011 03:54 (fourteen years ago)

i bought a pair of hdj-2000 off ebay that turned out to be fakes ... i got a refund from ebay but the headphones ended up coming back to me since the seller used a fake address and account info. in the meantime i bought a pair of real hdj-2000s.

what should i do with the fake ones i now own? how much can i get for them?

the TMA-1s are *beautiful* ... happy to hear they sound good

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Sunday, 18 September 2011 03:59 (fourteen years ago)

ill take your fake headphones

hank azaria & III (flopson), Sunday, 18 September 2011 06:27 (fourteen years ago)

do they sound half good?

hank azaria & III (flopson), Sunday, 18 September 2011 06:27 (fourteen years ago)

sell them on ebay as if they were real and continue the cycle. consider it "paying it forward"

the most astonishing writer on ilx (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 20 September 2011 01:43 (fourteen years ago)

vague, slightly irrelevant question: does most everyone else here trash headphones when either the L or R speaker stops working? this seems to be the case w/ me for every pair of headphones i've ever had, and i'm beginning to suspect it's how i wrap my headphones... perhaps frequent tension on the wires is damaging them? iono

The cable usually fails where it meets the plug. You can solder a new plug if you're dedicated.

elan, Tuesday, 20 September 2011 02:42 (fourteen years ago)

super easy if your plug is a standard 3 pole, impossible if it's a 4 pole with a mic and/or remote

Whiney G. Blutfarten (dayo), Tuesday, 20 September 2011 10:35 (fourteen years ago)

wait
what does that mean
