What's the earliest DJ mix conceived as a CD? It seems like if the form's dying people should have a better idea of when it started – is there something canonical that can be pointed to, but I'm having a hard time thinking of what that might be. What am I missing?

Isn't it something by Coldcut? Beats & Pieces or whatever.

There have to have been people before Journeys by DJ though, right? 1993 seems a little later than I would have expected.

I forget whether I read this in Turn The Beat Around or Last Night A DJ Saved My Life, but Tom Moulton's first edits were all presented as a mix on a reel-to-reel tape which he then tried to shop around to Fire Island discotheques

That info re: Moulton is def in the newish DJ History book. As far as I know, the Nasty mix was the first commercially released DJ mix on CD.

― with hidden noise, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 But CDs only really broke through in the mid to late 80s.
1993 sounds about right. There were plenty of DJ mixes around before then but most were all cassettes released by the various clubs.

every bio of Nasty mentions him as being recognized by Guinness as the 'record holder' for first commercially available dj mix.

It's curious that those japanese Tony Humphries mixes are titled Master Mix Medley's. makes me wonder if they were actually DJ mixes or if they were studio megamix things.
― brotherlovesdub, Wednesday, 14 September 2011 21:56 (fourteen years ago)
why are we drawing the line at CDs? there must have been cassette mixes before that.

I wonder what the definition they're using is; e.g. why doesn't Walter Gibbons' Super Hits for Non Stop Dancing count?
