War on Drugs

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Friday, 16 September 2011 16:04 (fourteen years ago)

War On Drugs. But I wish they'd record together again, splitting vocals and songwriting. That would be an incredible band.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 16 September 2011 16:11 (fourteen years ago)

practically the same thing.

Trip Maker, Friday, 16 September 2011 16:23 (fourteen years ago)

Except they aren't? Faux-spacerock vs weak acoustic bollocks. War on Drugs.

Matt DC, Friday, 16 September 2011 16:50 (fourteen years ago)

voted Kurt Vile, his acoustic stuff is better than his rock stuff

dmr, Friday, 16 September 2011 17:59 (fourteen years ago)

kurt vile is great

max, Friday, 16 September 2011 18:00 (fourteen years ago)

I was disappointed with the new Kurt Vile record compared to Childish Prodigy, which I love.

kornrulez6969, Friday, 16 September 2011 18:00 (fourteen years ago)

max otm

I do like War on Drugs also but

dmr, Friday, 16 September 2011 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

Kurt Vile is great but he didn't release his masterpiece yet. i got a feeling its only a matter of time.
his albums suffer a little from lack of consistency and i agree he is better when he rocks.

the first War On Drugs record is just ok, the 2nd is great and is better than any Vile record because of it's awesome production and instrument playing but as i said,i think Vile might top Slave Ambient.time will tell..

nostormo, Friday, 16 September 2011 18:12 (fourteen years ago)

Lamp, Friday, 16 September 2011 18:44 (fourteen years ago)

pathos of the unwarranted encore (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 16 September 2011 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

isnt it Hunchback on Childish Prodigy?

nostormo, Friday, 16 September 2011 19:15 (fourteen years ago)

he's used that line on a bunch of different songs ... Hunchback, Beach on the Moon, and something else

Talked about here: http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/2011/03/qa_kurt_vile_on.php

dmr, Friday, 16 September 2011 19:43 (fourteen years ago)

yeah smoke ring for my halo rocks

max, Friday, 16 September 2011 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

he's used that line on a bunch of different songs
all this stuff seems a little lazy to me sometimes.
Sometimes I'm in the mood for that, though.

Trip Maker, Friday, 16 September 2011 20:09 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, what I like about vile is when he reminds of this stuff

Exhaustion in 70s rock

black metal version of "the boy with the thorn in his side" (Edward III), Friday, 16 September 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

Kurt Vile without hesitation. I prefer his acoustic stuff, and I sort of dislike the Violators.

remember yr man when he's at wooooooooooork (Z S), Friday, 16 September 2011 22:02 (fourteen years ago)

KURT VILE

War On Drugs vs Votes From People Who Haven't Heard The New War on Drugs Album

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Friday, 16 September 2011 23:38 (fourteen years ago)

probably otm, though i hope they wont vote unless they heard it

nostormo, Friday, 16 September 2011 23:44 (fourteen years ago)

that's the price of not being on Matador

nostormo, Friday, 16 September 2011 23:49 (fourteen years ago)

Slave Ambient's pretty good, I like it. But even that's not as good as Smoke Ring for my Halo, which is my least favorite thing Kurt Vile's done. CHALLOPS

remember yr man when he's at wooooooooooork (Z S), Friday, 16 September 2011 23:51 (fourteen years ago)

ive heard it, it sucks, learn to listen better

Lamp, Friday, 16 September 2011 23:53 (fourteen years ago)

i think both vile and war them are getting better with each record

nostormo, Friday, 16 September 2011 23:54 (fourteen years ago)

this. which doesn't sound too far off since iirc aren't most of the violators also members of w.o.drugs?

one month passes...

loooool

lol waggoner (am0n), Tuesday, 1 November 2011 21:49 (fourteen years ago)

two years pass...

people who enjoyed Slave Ambient or the last two Kurt Vile albums need to check out Lost in the Dream (uh, when it comes out). voting for KV would have been a nobrainer for me a couple years ago but War on Drugs is on a roll lately

Karl Malone, Saturday, 8 March 2014 15:16 (eleven years ago)

lol, i was reading a few posts above just now and i was like "haha, wonder who lamp burned there?", scroll up then

Karl Malone, Saturday, 8 March 2014 15:17 (eleven years ago)

Kurt Vile is great but he didn't release his masterpiece yet. i got a feeling its only a matter of time.

― nostormo, Friday, September 16, 2011 11:12 AM (2 years ago)

Prescient.

alpine static, Saturday, 8 March 2014 20:39 (eleven years ago)

Lost in the Dream is my most anticipated album this year. Slave Ambient is my favorite album this decade so far.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Saturday, 8 March 2014 23:20 (eleven years ago)

This is sounding great to me this morning - definitely their best (and I loved their last few). No huge sonic leaps forward, but they've definitely perfected their thing here, and added some greatguitar playing. Only thing that bugs me is the drums (this has been the case with their previous two as well), but whatever.

I hope this band does for 80s Dylan and Dire Straits what Bon Iver did for Peter Gabriel...

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Monday, 10 March 2014 13:45 (eleven years ago)

what bugs you about the drums, the production or the playing?

Karl Malone, Monday, 10 March 2014 13:46 (eleven years ago)

The sort of metronomic, Krautrock-y playing. I get that it's intentional and part of their thing, but I found myself thinking "My God, just play one fill."

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Monday, 10 March 2014 13:56 (eleven years ago)

This is nit-picky, though, because this is a frontrunner for my album of the year.

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Monday, 10 March 2014 13:57 (eleven years ago)

lol stereogum but here's a long article on granduciel http://www.stereogum.com/1668412/through-the-haze-the-struggles-visions-and-revelations-of-the-war-on-drugs/franchises/interview/

chive on you crazy diamond (diamonddave85), Monday, 10 March 2014 15:19 (eleven years ago)

man does this stuff sound like a boomer in the 80s. he should change the band name to Deadhead Sticker on a Cadillac

mizzell, Monday, 10 March 2014 15:36 (eleven years ago)

i think they use drum machine don'e they?

nostormo, Monday, 10 March 2014 16:06 (eleven years ago)

lol this album. was sorta bummed when burning ended up not being a cover of young turks, but a young turks/springsteen mashup.

I still haven't heard this new one, probably won't for awhile, but this band reminds me why I keep searching, looking for my next favorite album. I'm 34 fucking years old. I've been obsessed with music for the last 20 or so years, so I'm not usually overwhelmed with joy by a new release, but with TWoD, given the first two albums, this is my most-anticipated album in some time.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Monday, 17 March 2014 01:11 (eleven years ago)

i still get a lot of joy out of new music releases, even tho i'm 46 and not connected to the music business at all. feel like it keeps me (relatively) young. as things go, it's not a bad vice to have for a midlife crisis.

Daniel, Esq 2, Monday, 17 March 2014 01:29 (eleven years ago)

46 is 9 short years until i qualify for senior discounts at denny's. hopefully they'll still have the hobbit menu then.

Daniel, Esq 2, Monday, 17 March 2014 01:30 (eleven years ago)

re: metronomic playing, do we know that these are live drum tracks? i figured they were loops or drum machines.

i think "Freeway" is the best thing Kurt Vile has ever done.

3×5, Monday, 17 March 2014 04:47 (eleven years ago)

and I agree that it's 80 boomer music. I'm im my 30s now and I feel like Indie rock is trying to use pastiche and irony to trick me into liking Adult Contemporary Rock.

War on Drugs - Wagonwheel Blues
