Tell me what to like

I'm so bored.

Introduce me to a new band (not an old band that I haven't heard before - but a NEW band - new in the last 2 years...)

Search the archives to see what I like/hate.... But in short
Like - Replacements, Go-Betweens, Joy Division, Minutemen, Yo La Tengo...
Hate - Drum Machines, R&B "Vocalists", ...

It would help if you could point me to sound samples, reviews, webpages, etc...

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 9 September 2002 15:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Aphex Twin, Astrobotnia, Blackalicious, Missy Elliott, etc.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 9 September 2002 15:32 (twenty-three years ago)

riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.....

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 9 September 2002 16:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh so "drum machines" covers all hip-hop and electronica???!

Tom (Groke), Monday, 9 September 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

have you heard of the beatles? they raaaawk.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 9 September 2002 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

can't we suggest bands that might change your mind about above conditions instead?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 9 September 2002 16:56 (twenty-three years ago)

If you like Joy Division there's this hot new band called Interpol!!!

(Actual answer - no idea. I'll stop making snarky posts, sorry.)

Tom (Groke), Monday, 9 September 2002 16:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh so "drum machines" covers all hip-hop and electronica???!
No - but "NEW" was a criterion.

can't we suggest bands that might change your mind about above conditions instead?
I'd love it if you would. They aren't constraints so much as guidelines ... meaning, I haven't had much luck with them in the past..

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 9 September 2002 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

Replacements + Joy Division = Les Savy Fav

Kris (aqueduct), Monday, 9 September 2002 17:32 (twenty-three years ago)

.

Beatlesque Rock = The Photon Band ¥

christoff (christoff), Monday, 9 September 2002 17:44 (twenty-three years ago)

Kare Joao. He's Norwegian. He used to be the drummer in the Euroboys but he's solo now. Power-pop gone completely mad and epic.
Desoto Reds, from San Francisco. Smart nerds who love Bread and Oasis.
Pepito, also from San Francisco. Cuban/Mexican take on mathrock electronica.
If anyone likes 'em, I get full credit. If you don't, I never said this.

Matt C., Monday, 9 September 2002 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Interpol

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 9 September 2002 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for serious answers (don't stop...)

Desoto Reds sounds a bit dubious ... but I'll take your recommendataion on the strength of your other two recommendations, which may also be dubious....

I shall check on them... I will check on all recommendations (except the Beatles.) Thanks

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 9 September 2002 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

Interpol are boring me. Their not all that remarkable,IMHO.
Check out: "Kafbatamusik" by Ensimi or "Electric Ave. Tapes" By Tied + Tickled Trio. The new Liars record is quite nice also.

Juan Marquez, Monday, 9 September 2002 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

If a band called the Fiery Furnaces comes to your town, see 'em. Kind of a Voidoids thing with a bit of Patti/Pretenders. Your reaction will either be "hey, this is good" or "wow, this is great." I was somewhere in the middle, but I like them enough to recommend them.

Jody Beth Rosen, Monday, 9 September 2002 18:15 (twenty-three years ago)

LCD Soundsystem is the best match I can find, according to your likes and dislikes, but I'm assuming you can be flexible about new stuff.
Kim Hiorthoy - Hei. Scandinavian hard-drive improv, somewhere between old skool hardcore and folk. No drum machines, no vocals. I've yet to hear anything else like this, but it's hardly new, it came out early last year. Damn it, I should upload some of this.

nick.K (nick.K), Monday, 9 September 2002 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

can't we suggest bands that might change your mind about above conditions instead?

...Still waiting for some kind of suggestion there... or were you just trying to prove that you're open-minded but don't actually know of any good drum-machine music?

...Great suggestions so far from everyone else....

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 9 September 2002 18:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Ballboy. Dear shittin' gawd, Ballboy. For reasons I get too emotional to explain...

Oh, and Bearsuit too. You oughta love them.

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 9 September 2002 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Buy Matthew Ryan's "Concussion". The best record I have bought all year.

david h (david h), Monday, 9 September 2002 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Ballboy
Bearsuit

Mr Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 9 September 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

- Montgolfier Brothers? There is a new one out. Of the bands you listed I'd say the closest are the Go-Betweens, though they are more like a fusion of Nick Drake, The Smiths and The Field Mice. Not too far from Belle and Sebastian. The first album 17 Stars is absolutely wonderful.
- Did you ever listen to Godspeed YBE!? The atmosphere is rather dark but in a different lighter way than Joy Division. The music is more orchestral, with a lot of drive towards the next climax. Apocalyptic and psychedelic. Recommendation: Lift Your Skinny Fists
- Giant Sand isn't new but if you don't know them you should check them out. Closest in your likes are Yo La Tengo. GS are usually more chaotic and more difficult to get into. They blend desert rock, country, jazz, songwriting and punk. Recommended: Chore of Enchantment which is rather relaxed and tuneful.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Monday, 9 September 2002 19:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Enon's "High Society", Deerhoof's "Reveille", and Dark Tranquillity's "Damage Done". They're all good.

dan (dan), Monday, 9 September 2002 20:43 (twenty-three years ago)

If you can ovelook the fact that it's a new Robert Plant record then you'd probably like the new Robert Plant record a lot as well.

dan (dan), Monday, 9 September 2002 20:49 (twenty-three years ago)

...new in the last 2 years

Dark Tranquillity's debut came out more than ten years ago. That aside, I would encourage everyone to avoid "Damage Done" like the plague. It takes the concept of lifeless sterility to new levels...

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Monday, 9 September 2002 21:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Jill Scott
Angie Stone
The Rapture
Ludacris
Kenna

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 9 September 2002 21:09 (twenty-three years ago)

ooh, has there been a Kenna thread? if not, someone should totally start one.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 9 September 2002 22:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Fonda 500 - you'll never look back!

Charlie, Monday, 9 September 2002 22:56 (twenty-three years ago)

but don't Yo La Tengo... sometimews sue Drum machines?

dsico (dsico), Monday, 9 September 2002 23:35 (twenty-three years ago)

fonda 500 is great, what about the five foot edible smiths? i have never heard them but i like that name.

keith, Tuesday, 10 September 2002 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Ballboy. Dear shittin' gawd, Ballboy

I've heard good stuff about 'em elsewhere, so I'll have to check 'em out. But what an all-time awful band name.

wl, Tuesday, 10 September 2002 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Edible Five-Foot Smiths = more alleged weirdness from Hull, I think. My mates rate them very highly...but I've not yet had the pleasure.

I'd recommend seeking out The Lollies as well - supercool intelligent/stoopid kick-ass girlpop innit?

Charlie, Tuesday, 10 September 2002 01:27 (twenty-three years ago)

Try this one. Tinges of Yo La Tengo and Go Betweens.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 02:05 (twenty-three years ago)

hehe I asked a question that seemed to imply that I had a suggestion to make, but at the time I didn't. I still don't, but I am actually working on it, combing through my CDs...

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 02:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Al, I started a Kenna thread a while back. You can find it here.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Consonant is Clint Conley form Mission of Burma's new band. I think this may float your boat.

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 23:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Ah Siegbran your purity is to be envied but you're full of baloney about that new Dark Tranquillity, it's brilliant - the ghost of black metal come back to earth as chart pop, utterly great from beginning to end
