Am I the only person finding this top 40 thing depressing?

I simply cannot do a top 40. I have tried this afternoon but every time I get a list worked it depresses me.

The perfect solution seems to be 100% compilation albums – greatest hits, box sets, dj megamixes, best of labels, the eighties and so on. At least these are singles orientated formats but there are so many compilations and I’m voting for them because I like say 30% of the tracks…

Also going this route seems like spoiling the ballot paper - I despair of anything getting more than one vote – anyone else fancy voting for ‘Journeys by DJ Volume 5’ or ‘Tommy Boy Greatest Hits’?

Is anyone else finding this depressing?

I am just realizing I'm in the wrong spot. I sort of thought this was the sort of pop you'd find on tweenet or something, you know "pop" not necessariy meaning popular, but just a style of lighter rock music. Everyone here really digs the MTV stuff, huh?

Clearly I don't mean THE Top 40!

Guy, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No, buddy, I think you'll find it's a refreshingly pretty much even mix around here. The Chart Pop kids may be more vocal, but it's amazing to find an outlet where neither really has the domination, someone will always keep you in check no matter how indie or chart you might be.

I gave up trying to do any sort of lists or best of's ages ago. It just makes my head hurt.

I'm listing the last 40 things I listened to and liked. Fuck breadth. The only depressing thing about this is having to delete every occurrence of The (or should we delete all articles? Poor Fred, what if someone lists nothing but recordings by A Tribe Called Quest and A Handful of Dust?).

Otis Wheeler, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Poor Fred my ass, it's his jackassed rule. I want to resubmit my ballot using the word "The" in front of every single artist, even Madonna.

I know someone who is compiling a list of 40 Manics songs/albums/eps/bootlegs to send in. How many people are just taking the piss right about now? I mean, I did mine in a mostly serious fashion, with the disclaimer that it wasnt necessarily my 40 favorites, but it was the 40 I could think of at that time as being albums/songs I wouldn't mind coming on right this second. But I've talked to a pile of people who seem to just be taking the piss.

The last 40 things I listened to and liked were really fucking great. I'm completely serious here, but if anyone wants to take the piss, I could still use some backup on "I Got Erection".

Otis Wheeler, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll notify the Manics person to give up a slot to the song, babe. But only if someone's willing to give The Holy Bible backup. SLANT THE VOTE FOR RICHEY. Or something like that. Because, you know, I am on the verge of killing myself since the Manics were left out of the focus group and all.

i hope this CLEARLY insane individual realizes that the only way for something to make the list is for it to be mentioned TWICE.

fred solinger, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, we're all well aware of your facist rules.

The Ally, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

2 votes to chart?!? Then the only thing that's going to make it from my list is "I Got Erection". Actually, just count Otis' list twice. But only if the "I Got Five On It" remix is number 1 on his list with 161 points. This is as dumb as Survivor (the show, not the song).

Kris, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oops, that many points would break the rules. There's too many fucking rules.

Kris, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I say we only count Ally, Otis and Kris' votes, eighteen times each.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Ned has made the best suggestion I heard all night.

I scored twice tonight! In baseball, perverts.

Ally, Friday, 4 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't make a list but I'm all about making a rigged one to help Otis and Kris with erection etc.

Josh, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if kris gets a list in, it would spell PANDEMONIUM for the list as it currently stands: we could have an all n. european top ten, in addition to the northern euros already present on the list.

fred solinger, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
