Taking Sides: Remixes by the Chemical Brothers vs. Remixes OF the Chemical Brothers

Example of the former: Prodigy, "Voodoo People" (Chemical Brothers remix). Takes a hyperactive limb-flailer and slows it down to a blunted futurfonk lope.

Example of the latter: Chemical Brothers, "Life Is Sweet" (Daft Punk remix). Strips away all the Bass Of Death and the million drums bangin' and reconstructs it into an entirely different creature: long, minimalist, hypnotic and amazing.

The Daft Punk mix wins I'm afraid. Absolutely brilliant.

I've always felt the Chems to be far better remixers than original artists. With the honourable exceptions of "Life Is Sweet" and "Out Of Control", I'd take their early-mid '90s remix work over the vast majority of their own recorded output.

Top remixes by the Chems: Dave Clarke's No One's Driving, Bomb The Bass's Bug Powder Dust, Saint Etienne's Like A Motorway, Spiritualized's I Think I'm In Love. Top remixes of the Chems: Chemical Beats (Dave Clarke - a nice symmetry), Leave Home (Underworld), Out Of Control (Sasha). Plus Nate's choices, of course. Not a lot in it, I think.
