I often ponder on the seeming arbitrary nature of listing albums at the end of the year and then, essentially, seemingly, putting them away. So, what are you still listening to from last year? What are you not listening to? Why? Is this the same every year?
― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 1 October 2011 18:50 (thirteen years ago)
I just listened to all of 'Black Masses' by Electric Wizard on my way home from my local record shop. It sounded amazing. I'm not listening to Salem so much but I could have told you that then.
― Conan The Asshander (Doran), Saturday, 1 October 2011 19:14 (thirteen years ago)
Still bump Last Train to Paris occasionally, but that's about it. Notably, that came out in December.
― Ford Cumlord (The Reverend), Saturday, 1 October 2011 19:21 (thirteen years ago)
I keep the last year's worth of acquisitions on my phone, offloading albums once a month, so I don't fall into the end-of-year trap. So I just moved off last years Killing Joke but am still grooving to the latest Wire album.
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 1 October 2011 19:30 (thirteen years ago)
I listen to Causers of This every now and then, still manages to move me. tho I might be cheating a lil bit, I finally listened to it late last year, while the album leaked late '09 and the came out in February, so other people may be way more sick of it as of today
― V79, Saturday, 1 October 2011 19:35 (thirteen years ago)
I still listen to Swans 'My Father Will Guide Me Up A Rope To The Sky' and Jane Weaver's 'The Fallen By Watchbird' as well.

don't people tend to listen to new things they like a LOT though? i know i do. and then you probably just don't need to hear them as much for a while. they are probably still good though.

like i haven't listened to the pj harvey album from this year lately cuz i think i listened to it five hundred million times after i bought it.

The Vicki Leekx mixtape still gets a monthly play. I burned it to disc and it's absolutely great for driving - you can't skip tracks or otherwise, so it pays perfect compliment to keeping your hands on the wheel as well as constantly being surprised at stuff you otherwise would've missed just playing your favorite "songs".
― kelpolaris, Saturday, 1 October 2011 20:07 (thirteen years ago)
The Warpaint record was released last year, wasn't it? That.
― Turrican, Saturday, 1 October 2011 20:08 (thirteen years ago)
^yeah. I'm still listening to that as well - not out of enjoyment, but b/c I still think I can make a certain "break-through" w/ them.. the whole "i get it now!" period. I'm on listen six... not boding well, but I'll give it another try next time I'm bored.

Yeah, I'm still getting a lot out of records released over the last five years or so... of course, some records end up slipping to the back, but admittedly there's been a few mainstays from stuff released since 2006 that I'm still listening to very regularly at the moment.

― Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 1 October 2011 20:38 (thirteen years ago)
Most of them, actually. It's more often particular songs/singles each year that I'll go nuts over and then not listen to again for years afterwards. I've grown much more choosy about the albums I champion from year to year and usually end up keeping them in regular rotation moving forward.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 1 October 2011 20:42 (thirteen years ago)
throughout this year i've listened to about half of my top 10 of 2010 semi-regularly, although it's all relative -- i'm not a big repeat listener so if i play something that isn't brand new more than once a month it's like a potential all-time favorite. but it helps that a couple of those came out at the very end of the year.
― some dude, Saturday, 1 October 2011 20:55 (thirteen years ago)
Yeah, I'm in the same boat as Some Dude in terms of not playing things to death.
By the way, Dude, what are those couple of things from the end of the year?
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 1 October 2011 22:40 (thirteen years ago)
As I said on Twitter, I don't listen to many of my favorite albums from 2010 anymore, but I listen to my favorite albums from 20 years ago (some of which are way more than 20 years old, btw) all the time.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Saturday, 1 October 2011 22:47 (thirteen years ago)
I just went back and looked at my Top 10 metal albums of 2010, and there's three or four that I immediately felt like I might enjoy listening to; the others I could safely skip.

Still listen to these fairly often, the two that I connected with best on an emotional level to start with:
Oneohtrix Point Never - ReturnalSun Kil Moon - Admiral Fell Promises
― master musicians of jamiroquai (NickB), Saturday, 1 October 2011 23:21 (thirteen years ago)
sometimes i'm so overwhelmed and exhausted with the amount of new music i'm exposed to, plus the old music i discover or re-discover, that it's easiest to move past last year's favorites quickly.
having said that, i still listen to my top four from 2010 -- Grinderman; Gil Scott-Heron; Kanye West; How To Dress Well -- a lot.
i just bought admiral fell promises tonight!
― Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 1 October 2011 23:22 (thirteen years ago)
Nice choice! Lots of people weren't so keen on it compared to the previous albums, but I think that nylon-string guitar is really pretty.

i still listen to flockavelli regularly despite also struggling to keep up with the like six albums worth of material out this year that i also listen to & other brick squad trax/tapes. its probably one of my favourite albums of all time though & helped me get through a really hard breakup/winter. still listen to twin shadow, arp, ben klok berghain, sex church, earl every once in a blue moon. havent listened to yelawolf, e-40, the-dream once
― u0sd0ןɟ (flopson), Saturday, 1 October 2011 23:39 (thirteen years ago)
Ty Segall - Melted - and not just b/c I'm seeing him tonight (Goodbye Bread is pretty dang good, too, though).

still listening to Rangda, Swans, Neil Young, Faun Fables - all within the last week. within the last few months, maybe Emeralds, Sun City Girls, Ariel Pink.
not listening to Chemical Brothers, that Michael Hurley "Blue Hills" LP, Have One On Me, Tonetta, or that last Legendary Pink Dots which I really should revisit.

Hmm...
1. Tallest Man On Earth (frequently) 2. Broken Social Scene (not enough to justify its 2nd place slot, in retrospect)3. Drake (still plenty)4. Das Racist (haven't played in a while aside from two fave tracks)5. LCD Soundsystem (once or twice in the last few months, but yeah, I overrated it a tad)6. Ryan Bingham (not as often as #s 3 & 5, but enough to know it maybe should've ranked even higher)7. Owen Pallett (played a few times this year; was a very early '10 release, so heard it more than most of the others last year)8. Erykah Badu (maybe played once in the last few months)9. The Paperbacks (gave it good but not great review upon it's release; grew upon me enough through the year to make my top 10; has grown on me even more since)10. Laura Marling (played a handful of times this year, but not lately as I've had a new one by her to concentrate on)
Of course, replayability isn't the only criteria for what makes an album great, and even the ones that I haven't played much this year hardly embarrass me now. But yeah, this is a useful exercise for seeing how albums you were caught up with in the moment sound a year or so down the road.

― fennel cartwright, Sunday, 2 October 2011 00:21 (thirteen years ago)
I'm listening more to my early '10 releases - mostly because it's now been almost 2 years and I'm no longer sick of them.
― Jedmond, Sunday, 2 October 2011 01:12 (thirteen years ago)
Most of my favorite singles from 2010 were snuck onto 2011 mixes.. Besides those, I didn't get sick of the Merchandise album until maybe a month ago, but that seems recent.. I didn't listen to Flockaveli until December so it doesn't seem old yet. Every month or so I've been coming back to No Age, Happy Birthday, Caribou, Earl & Bastard... I still listen to Beak> very often.
But October is just about that time of the year when all of these start to feel played out.. In January they will seem ancient.

This was my end of year/Xmas compilation:
1. brave timbers - i'll always come back to this place (epic 45 remix)2. the declining winter - leave3. happenstance -the one eyed king4. amiina - over and again5. the album leaf - summer fog6. his name is alive - st michael7. olafur arnalds - Þú ert sólin8. codes in the clouds - the distance between us (nils frahm remix)9. drivan -som en laderlapp10. isan - channel 1011. luke abbott - holkham drones12. pantha du prince - stick to my side (lawrence version)13. james blake - klavierwerke14. four tet - angel echoes15. sean carey - in the dirt16. hurts - wonderful life17. the declining winter - official world cup theme 2010
I'd say i've played declining winter, album leaf and luke abbott a bit and isan a lot beyond january. actually, playing the cd just now and i'd *forgotten* about a lot of lovely stuff. my listening habits might be distorted a bit by having been a journalist in the past and having had to listen to new things out of necessity.

My top ten from last year:
1. Janelle Monae - Archandroid (listened to this a lot as spring turned to summer)2. Deerhunter - Halycon Digest (have pulled this out at least once a month)3. Agalloch - Marrow of the Spirit (not much, but probably will this winter, seems fitting for that time of year)4. Nachtmystium - Addicts: Black Meddle Pt. II (not much, been spending time with their back catalog)5. Warpaint - The Fool (at least once a month for this one too)6. Rangda - False Flag (have pulled it out a couple times, but I need to be in a specific mood for it - not a knock in the least, btw)7. The Drums - The Drums (not really, with the new album out now)8. Bottomless Pit - Blood Under the Bridge (a couple times, but more time spent with old Silkworm)9. Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma (really intense week with this over the summer but, other than that, not really)10. Kylesa - Spiral Shadow (at least once a month probably)

― mike t-diva, Monday, 3 October 2011 13:56 (thirteen years ago)
Have listened to this year from time to time, though not nearly as much as last year: Janelle Monae, Marina & the Diamonds, Daddy Yankee.
So that's the top of my list from last year.
Have listened to recently and enjoy more than I did last year: Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma.
Have dipped back into some of the others but not a whole lot. Now that you mention it, this might be a good time to put on the Khaled Abdul Rahman CD from last year.
Also, scott on the mark.

Laura Marling – I Speak Because I Can5. Spoon – Transference4. LCD Soundsystem – This is Happening3. Owen Pallett – Heartland2. Caribou – Swim1. Four Tet – There is Love in You
I've not listened to VOTST in a while, probably a year. Likewise Menomena, Steve Mason, and the Lindstrom & Christabelle & LCD albums as a whole (though I've dug individual tracks out of the latter two).
I had a little obsession with Heartland a couple of weeks ago and listened to it about 6 or 7 times in just a couple of days. Likewise I dug Transference out for a couple of spins too.
The Laura Marling I feel like I've played, but that's probbaly because we saw her live, and there was a new album to get to grips with too.
Four Tet and Caribou I've listened to every couple of months or so, especially around ATP landmarks (getting tickets, seeing the line-up, week before we went, etc).
