A bit more obscure, but the bands Year Long Disaster and Karma to Burn kind of merged and then pretty much played and recorded with the same lineup under both nom de plumes.

ok so Mike Ratlidge plinking along on a couple of tracks indicates a "merger" of Soft Machine and a Syd Barrett solo album?

Interesting interpretation of yr own thread idea (which i dug!), but yeah, can't get behind that answer. anyway its late I'm out peace

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 2 October 2011 04:54 (thirteen years ago)

wyatt drummed too don't forget, and gilmour and waters played on it

Pere Ubu & Husker Du => Bob Mould's touring band late '89.

C.O.G Swans + Foetus = band on Rife
(& weren't several of those earlier part of a band called Damage or something?)

J.A.M.C & Gun Club = Freeheat

Gun Club + Legendary Stardust Cowboy lineup for a tour in '84.

Various Bags & then various Clock DVA made up large parts of Gun Club line-ups at different times.

Extra Golden - 1/2 of a Luo Benga band called Extra something plus half of a D.C. post-rock band called Golden. Interesting hybrid music form between the 2.

Did they ever actually record anything together though? I thought that was just that split where they covered each other.

808s & Deep States (voodoo chili), Monday, 7 May 2018 17:49 (seven years ago)

maybe i'm missing thread premise but it seems like band A would need to pick up at least a couple of band B's former members on a long-term basis (even if band B continues on) for it to be a merger. so foo fighters and sunny day real estate (two members) merged, but modest mouse didn't merge with the smiths when johnny marr joined and paul & linda didn't merge with the moody blues by bringing on denny laine to form wings. yes and the buggles seems like the archetypal merger to me. there have to be some rap crews that have done this but the closest i can think of is all-star featured credits like leaders of the new school teaming with tribe called quest on "scenario."

a related category: frontpersons acquiring a band wholesale, which would be an obvious merge if the frontperson was marketed under a "band" name. i'm thinking of billy joel acquiring most of a gigging long island bar band as his "classic" lineup - if his act had previously been booked and marketed as "the piano men" it'd be a merge.
