About his massive influence on other musicians, he told the Guardian last year: “"I'm not one for showing off. But I guess my guitar-playing sticks out."

Sweet

Even though I'd owned the Donovan album with "House Of Jansch" for decades, amazingly I'd never heard Jansch himself till "Courting Blues" showed up over the end credits of The Squid and the Whale a few years ago. That led me to "Running from Home," which, when a friend and I counted down our hundred favourite songs on Facebook recently, I had at #4.

I only discovered him from hearing his songs on the "Squid and the Whale" soundtrack six or seven years ago, which blew me away. So beautiful and unique.

Listened to Pentangle's Sweet Child just the other day. Jansch is surely amongst my fave guitarists, as is Renbourn.

The RFH concert was wonderful. One of the most remarkable guitarists the UK has every produced.

It's very sad. I feel more affected than I usually do by a musician's death. I think it must be because his music has been so important to my father.

'running from home' is a favourite for me too, as is 'woe is love my dear' - which I once daftly considered playing at a gig (can't think if the gig even happened, now - the cover certainly didn't).

the pinefox, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 13:34 (thirteen years ago)

Bummer. He was great opening for Neil Young not long ago. People in the crowd were rapt, despite the fact that I gather most of them had never heard of him. Lots of calls for an encore, which I want to say ... he got? As an opener?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 14:11 (thirteen years ago)

Listening to Jack Orion now.

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 14:14 (thirteen years ago)

RIP, one of the greatest guitarists ever. Knew he had been struggling with his health in recent years, didn't know he was this sick. Glad he got to have a little victory lap here in the states with Neil.

tylerw, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 14:44 (thirteen years ago)

Discovered him in high school tracing roots of Zeppelin, in college became a full fledge collector of his solo work (and Anne Briggs), then Pentangle.

RIP, I wish I could be in Glasgow tonight.

In June 2009, he discovered he had a golf ball-size tumour on one of his lungs following what was at first a routine visit to the dentist. Following treatment, he went on to co-headline a US tour with Neil Young. Jansch had recently been forced to cancel a live show in Edinburgh due to ill health and was living in a hospice in north London at the time of his death.

master musicians of jamiroquai (NickB), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 15:13 (thirteen years ago)

Texted friend of mine to tell him the news, he texted back saying he planned to see him Edinburgh in August but thought it was overpriced and "You can't take it with you." Pure Scottish gallows humour there.

I was super bummed when he cancelled his most recent Chicago date because of illness, but I didn't know things were so far along. Glad I saw him a few years ago. His music has really made a huge impact on my life, and I am sorry to see him go.

Roy Harper’s tribute to the late Bert Jansch

Bert Jansch and I arrived at the same club in London within three months of each other in 1965. We’d both had very separate journeys to get there, we knew nothing of each other, but we arrived at Les Cousins in Greek St, Soho, for the same reason. We were both inspired to play music to people. I was introduced to the club by Peter Bellamy of The Young Tradition.

Within a week I realised that this was going to be my new home. There was lots to take in. There were so many fantastic young musicians. I can remember being absolutely blown away by a young American called Danny Kalb in the first week. Going home and thinking that as far as the blues was concerned, I was miles behind where I could have been. I’d been in my own vacuum, it was time to get involved.

The young players were all very gifted but very different people. It was an amazing place to be. Among the many I saw in that first week were John Renbourn, Alexis Korner, Paul Simon and Alex Campbell, oh, and yes, someone called Bert Jansch. Bert who? How d’you spell that then?

At first I didn’t know what to think about Bert. He was very softly spoken and obviously very shy, with hair that fell in waves across a gentle but strong face with kind eyes. His Scottish accent was only just discernible, but his playing, and his delivery, were both immediately stunning. Some of his words weren’t always that decipherable, but the combination of the guitar and vocal together were truly a perfect and unique fit. The one thing you knew was that this guy had really found his medium. And it looked like he’d been there for years.

For a young man of 20, his songs were astounding. Things like The Needle Of Death, Running From Home and Strolling Down The Highway, as well as his own version of Davy Graham’s famous Anji were truly magic pieces of their age. He was a humble powerhouse whose honesty was so obviously unquestionable.

Bert was always such a very private man. Getting him to respond was sometimes an undertaking. It was often a struggle for him to speak, but then again, his songs spoke for him. They were often among the most eloquent pieces of musical folk art imaginable: plaintive, intricate and beckoning, with seemingly an ancient root reaching back across centuries of seemingly pure earth knowledge.

As a presence, his effect on his friends was beyond description. He was unfathomably and instantly attractive. I will never forget that. He gave love in such a gentle way that it was impossible not to immediately identify with that and be forever enraptured by one so gifted in that respect. From the heart Bert, the way it always was with you. Your friends will never forget you. Ever.

By Roy Harper

noo, RIP Bert. After not listening to him for a while I've been loving Bert and John lately. All interviews etc I've seen suggest he was a lovely man too.

So sad.

Alot of people never heard of Bert Jansch, but nearly everyone listens to artists and bands that were influenced by him.

bentelec, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 22:58 (thirteen years ago)

Huge bummer. I was honestly shocked to read this news -- actually saw him four times over the last 15 or so months, and he looked and sounded great every time! I mean, I knew he had had cancer some years back, but I guess I thought it was in "remission". It's just amazing how quickly it can take a person.

Oddly, heard some Pentangle just last night, but inadvertently -- I was at a bar watching the baseball and "Pentangling" happened to come on over the stereo, which was tuned to the bartender's Pandora station (and was otherwise mostly playing lots of bluesy rock like Black Keys) Haven't actually pulled out my own Pentangle records in at least a year. this will be corrected.

Nice. People usually don't try to describe his guitar playing! He made the 10 o'clock news on the BBC too, last night, so nice bit of recognition, of course he's deid so it'll do him no good.

Juice Should Be Sterliized (Tom D.), Thursday, 6 October 2011 10:27 (thirteen years ago)

And I've never really got into Pentangle either, they're a bit too polished and professional for my liking, his solo stuff has more ragged edges

Juice Should Be Sterliized (Tom D.), Thursday, 6 October 2011 10:31 (thirteen years ago)

There was also a tribute bit on PM on R4 yesterday where Eddie Mair was chatting to Robert Peston about him (Peston was apparently a bit of a fan). Think they had some time to fill cos that led to them idly chatting about the other music he was into, got a little strange when Peston said that the best live band he'd seen in the 70's was Culture.
