to my total surprise... Plastikman

I stumbled across this again last week. Frustratingly it was never properly released, just given away as a free cassette, so it's impossible to get a high quality recording of it. I absolutely loved this at the time. Here's a soundcloud of the whole mix (including the second side which isn't in this poll), which suffers a bit from cassette quality:

I'm sure I found a better quality version somewhere on the internet last week, but I can't seem to find it today.

Played this to death at the time - lots of interesting breakbeat stuff before it became codified as big beat. Voting for the Chems track - one of their first ever remixes.

retroactive Plastikman appreciation has been one of the greatest musical pleasures of my 30s

At one point I heard Spastik at every club I went to. You could basically mix it into anything.

Utterly baffled that you didn't like Plastikman at the time, Dan!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 October 2011 15:48 (thirteen years ago)

Just been reminded of Emmanuel Top's Lobotomie - best climactic 303 frenzy ever.

I can't find Transglobal Underground – International Stomp (Justin Robertson Remix) anywhere, which is annoying because the best bit of the whole mix for me is when this track is going "Ex-pe-ri....mental, Ex-pe-ri....mental" and Spastik is rising up through it.

aside from one or two random asides like Exposure I was always way more of a toontown dude

I recognise this - I think I had it on some other mix thing. Maybe 'Brit Hop & Amyl House'?

Yeah, that was a great comp. I bought the actual Justin Robertson JDJ double album but it was frustratingly pedestrian compared to the Coldcut one.

Conan The Asshander (Doran), Saturday, 8 October 2011 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

Gotta go for Emmanuel Top here... Nobody does acid minimalism better than him.

anyone ever find out who/what the intro sample was/is? been driving me mad for 16 years.

piscesx, Monday, 10 October 2011 09:12 (thirteen years ago)

I don't know where it comes from, but google suggests that the "they blew one planet up - the planet Maldek" bit is part of an established conspiracy theory:

mm yeah i'd read about this as a result of the clip! the man in the clip sounds a bit like James Woods; can't be him though i'm sure.

went to a big and overpriced rave in what is now the O2 Arena for NYE 2000/01, which featured the likes of Orbital, Leftfield and Weatherall, who I believe played Spastik for his midnight tune

still have this tape iirc, I wouldn't say it got me into stuff exactly but it meant I was listening to it before I listened to it, if you see what I mean

the green manalishi (with the big boobies) (DJ Mencap), Monday, 10 October 2011 10:07 (thirteen years ago)

the Jon Carter one was good aswell.

piscesx, Monday, 10 October 2011 10:49 (thirteen years ago)

Jon Carter one was way better than this one iirc (and as a sidenote Fatboy's Beat Up The NME tape [on the Spiritualized J. Spaceman-in-a-spacesuit issue) is prob still one of my top ten or twenty DJ mixes ever).

Spastik's probably better but I definitely loved the Lionrock remix way more at the time, so voting that

^^^^ this, that Fatboy Slim mix is amazing, I still have and listen to that tape. The Hardknox remix on that is insane. I also have the Jon Carter one, which was turned into a Heavenly Social mix, both of which were great. I've been looking for the latter online and have failed, need to make an eBay trip I think.

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Monday, 10 October 2011 12:27 (thirteen years ago)

I loved this mix at the time. Spastik is an inner circle classic, it's almost unfair to poll it alongside the rest, for #2 and #3 I'd put Dannell Dixon and Emmanuel Top in some order.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 10 October 2011 13:00 (thirteen years ago)

Jon Carter's Radio One Essential Mix from about 1996/7 was a wondrous thing of roughneck jungle, ragga, dancehall and acid. He was such a killer DJ at the time as well.

Conan The Asshander (Doran), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:10 (thirteen years ago)

Carter did a Breezeblock in 98/99 that was so amazing, that - get this - it actually warranted Mary-Anne Hobbs' enthusiasm on the end of the tape

Saw/heard Justin Robertson DJ at The Social last night and attempted to express my appreciation of this mix (but I'm afraid I was very, very drunk)
