Borrowed it from a friend. Loved it. Anyone know which of her other albums are similar? And can you recommend similar artists?

I haven't played Gafieira Moderna much but the previous album Hard Bossa is very fine, probably her best since Tardes Cariocas (circa 83) which is one of my fav albums ever. Thats the one I can't recomend enough.

The albums Feminina and Aldeia De Ogun from the 70's are the classics with some of her best songs. The Essential Joyce compilation is a great intro with has a decent selction from Tardes Cariocas, Feminina and Aldeia De Ogun.

I tend to prefer Joyce's earlier stuff. The first four tracks on The Essential Joyce are among the best Brazilian music ever - especially "Adeus Maria Fulo," which has a strange, alien Indian-film-soundtrack feel. Os Mutantes covered it as well, but I like Joyce's version better.

Just to second the "Essential Joyce" recommendation. Possibly my fave Brazilian thing ever. And if you ever see the original LP of "Feminina" (a great album), grab it, if only for the amazing foldout photo of a young Joyce with her hair blowin' in the breeze. Now she dresses like one of my mother's friends, though, all smart trouser suits and a short hairdo. But she can still do a rasper live set.

I have it and have listened to it many times, but it always goes in one ear and out the other. It crosses the thin line between ethereal and boring.

I found my way to ilx in 2002 when trying to find the sample used in Triple X Large's Calimero '68.

Did not realize until just now that it's Joyce's Aldeia de Ogum

This is really fucking good even though it makes me feel a little like I'm at one of my parents' friends dinner parties.
