I feel like there's a parallell universe where ILX is populated by very famous people. Ned Raggett is their leader, obv.

Mark G, Monday, 10 October 2011 23:48 (fourteen years ago)

Glasvegas are utter worthless abominable shite so theirs is bound to be the worst

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Monday, 10 October 2011 23:53 (fourteen years ago)

Snow Patrol

smash williams, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:23 (thirteen years ago)

i'm actually kind of impressed by the star power of this comp (assuming these are all new recordings and not covers that already existed), especially compared to the Nevermind covers comp that Spin just did that was like 2 big names and a bunch of bullshit blog bands

some dude, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:30 (thirteen years ago)

wait there is still a the fray?

American Horror Sorry (jjjusten), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:34 (thirteen years ago)

wait there is still a nine inch nails?

some dude, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:35 (thirteen years ago)

I assumed Butch Vig died years ago.

manic pixie fream girl (rip van wanko), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:38 (thirteen years ago)

ok i actually really want to hear nin do "zoo station"

garbage doing "wild horses" is a do-not-want and any band doing "acrobat" sounds horrible too

da croupier, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:38 (thirteen years ago)

Depeche Mode – So Cruel

wait -- I thought Depeche wrote their own version on Songs on Faith and Devotion

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:39 (thirteen years ago)

killers doing "ultraviolet" is hilarious cuz that song already sounds like a blueprint for the killers

da croupier, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:40 (thirteen years ago)

02. U2 (Jacques Lu Cont Mix) – Even Better Than The Real Thing

HELLO

piscesx, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:40 (thirteen years ago)

is this gavin friday guy remotely good or am i right to think he's some shitty post-punk-cabaret dillweed i'd never hear about if he wasn't pals with bono? cuz that's always been my assumption.

da croupier, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:42 (thirteen years ago)

Patti Smith – Until The End Of The World

I can imagine her reconceiving this as a spoken word thing.

You
You were talking
ABOUT
THE END OF
THE...WORLD

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:42 (thirteen years ago)

the Virgin Prunes sounded like second-rate Bryan Ferry singing Jacques Brel.

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:43 (thirteen years ago)

i honestly feel like odds are at least one or two tracks on this will be really good but i'm not gonna try and predict which

some dude, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:44 (thirteen years ago)

why wasn't Adele asked to sing "So Cruel"?

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:45 (thirteen years ago)

having snow patrol do "mysterious ways" makes this album look even more ballady than it already is

xpost oh i bet trent's gonna own "zoo station"

da croupier, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:45 (thirteen years ago)

or Sade sing "Love is Blindness"?

lumber up, limbaugh down (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:45 (thirteen years ago)

jack white's gonna do to the edge what prince did to george harrison just ya wait

da croupier, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:46 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah the Patti Smith one I can already hear in my head, a canny choice I think.

I get having Snow Patrol on there in general but "Mysterious Ways" is wasted on them. At least "One" is a dirge they'd understand (but then what would Damien Rice do I guess).

Garbage/Wild Horses is another example where I'm not puzzled by the band choice generally but the band/song combo is deeply flawed.

TWD remix of "Even Better Than The Real Thing" the only one that might live up to its name obv.

Tim F, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 00:46 (thirteen years ago)

gavin friday is pretty great most of the time, much of that time he's more an acquired taste. virgin prunes were pretty dope. he hasn't made an album in something like 15 years, did some good soundtrack stuff w/jim sheridan here and there. seems like a decent match for the fly (bono kinda stole his whole "conspiratorial whisper" schtick from him.)

omar little, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 01:01 (thirteen years ago)

Jack White's song is streaming over here: http://consequenceofsound.net/2011/10/check-out-jack-white-covers-u2s-love-is-blindness/

smash williams, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 01:56 (thirteen years ago)

it's weird to think of jack white covering a song written after 1990, i wonder if that's ever happened before

some dude, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 01:56 (thirteen years ago)

he hasn't made an album in something like 15 years

Not true, it turned out! Released an album called Catholic earlier this year.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 02:00 (thirteen years ago)

genuinely curious about some of these

balls, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 02:54 (thirteen years ago)

pretty sure you, da croupier, would only find your assumption confirmed if you listened, but any amount of shitty dillweed is worth it for You Made Me The Thief Of Your Heart imo

The only song I know by Gavin Friday is Angel from the "Romeo + Juliet" soundtrack. He along with Garbage, and to a lesser extent Glasvegas, were on my list of people I'm surpised are still around.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 14:46 (thirteen years ago)

I... kind of want this?

Garbage just reformed this year. I'm sure I remember Ned or someone posting a couple of years ago about a tribute concert to himself that Friday did in New York with U2 and Lou Reed and suchlike.

Gavin Friday is honored in my house for his guest vocal on The Fall's "Clear Off".

Axolotl with an Atlatl (Jon Lewis), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 00:14 (thirteen years ago)

some dude, the Stripes did a pretty good cover of Tegan and Sara's "Walking With a Ghost".

Leonard Pine, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:26 (thirteen years ago)

either Snow Patrol or the Fray.

wrestlingisreal420 (crüt), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 17:36 (thirteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

This is on newsstands as of today.

She Got the Shakes, Thursday, 27 October 2011 12:10 (thirteen years ago)

Just took a brief skim through the tracks on Youtube.

I'd say The Fray's is the biggest trainwreck.

MarkoP, Thursday, 27 October 2011 15:01 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, the real thing...
