no, seriously.

preferably in the next three hours, like.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 12:12 (twenty-three years ago)

I got all my questions from nicking them off other people who'd thought them up. Do you see any parallel for this in your own work?

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 12:13 (twenty-three years ago)

I always like to ask "Seriously, why do you bother?". They'll either give you a great in-depth answer, or twat you, both of which would make for a great article.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 12:17 (twenty-three years ago)

I got all my questions from nicking them off other people who'd thought them up. Do you see any parallel for this in your own work?

Ho ho ho.

Actually this stems from a conversation I had with a rather beleaguered colleague who has just started to work in the A&E department of a national newspaper. He wants to do a feature on Interpol and was testing the idea of a "New Retro New York" type angle on me.

The idea was *so* cliched and *so* overdone that I couldn't even muster the energy to tell him why. That said, it was also *so* insidious and *so* pervasive that I was really at a loss to suggest anything better.

Just trying to get a discussion started, that's all.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 12:41 (twenty-three years ago)

make sure the question includes the words 'joy division'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 12:51 (twenty-three years ago)

Alrighty....

(1) How do you tolerate your bass player's tonsorial shenanigans without laughing out loud?

(2) Listen to Joy Division much?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 12:57 (twenty-three years ago)

I have eleven:

Do you like punch and pie?

Do you like them separately or together?

What kind of punch do you like?

What kind of pie do you like?

Do you eat your pie with a fork?

Or do you eat your pie with a spork?

Do you like your punch in a glass?

Or do you prefer a cup?

Do you like your punch with ice?

Or do you like your ice all mashed up?

If so, do you like your ice in cubes?

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 13:03 (twenty-three years ago)

Question eleven goes before question ten.

I also forgot to mention Joy Division.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 13:04 (twenty-three years ago)

"Interpol: Noose Sensation" would be a great headline...

Nicole (Nicole), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 13:12 (twenty-three years ago)

exactly

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

Alternate answer:

Do you think your singer sounds like the guy from the Tragically Hip?

Do you think your singer sounds like the guy from Bauhaus?

Do you think your singer sounds like the guy from Joy Division?

Do you think your singer sounds like the guy from Kitchens of Distinction?

How old is your singer and does he own a copy of The Idiot?

Do you think your slow songs sound at all like the Sound?

Do you think your fast songs sound at all like Josef K?

Do you think your medium-paced songs sound at all like the Chameleons?

Don't you realize that it's been done better before?

Whenever I hear your name, I think of the little screen that flashes before the beginning of every movie I watch at home that tells me not to copy it. I also think of a Monty Python sketch, which makes me think of this phrase: "Interpol the penguin." Does this bother you?

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 13:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Meaning:

Even some of the best and most thoughtful pieces on this band so far (cough*cough) seem compelled to speak to the mists rather than to the music.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 13:28 (twenty-three years ago)

So far I like Dom's question best, BTW.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 13:31 (twenty-three years ago)

In fact I think I'll just tell them that I'm sick and tired of reading about them because everyone's crashing the same car anyway. And see what comes from that.

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 13:32 (twenty-three years ago)

Well who would want to speak to The Music?

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 13:34 (twenty-three years ago)

But Dom's question has been nicked from another journalist! (No dig on Dom; he nicked from a good source.)

Lack of space didn't allow me to be more clear with the point I was attempting to make in my review. It basically said that one could possibly (and should) listen to the record without trying to find all the points of reference or similarities. You have a young guitar band working with traditional strong structures, therefore many parallels can be drawn (and, in this case, more than one particular band can be talked about). What modern guitar band reminds you of no one else?

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

But Dom's question has been nicked from another journalist! (No dig on Dom; he nicked from a good source.)

Justify Your Existence?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 13:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom might be able to help me out here.

If I'm not mistaken, Paul Morley would occasionally start out with a question like "Why do you bother?"

Actually, he might've only done this once.

And, quite possibly, he might not have been the first journalist to do something like this.

BUT I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT DOM'S QUESTION ISN'T VERY ORIGINAL TISK TISK!!!!

(Again, not to knock Dom at all. I'm making a somewhat subtle point.)

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 13:55 (twenty-three years ago)

Andy --

Does the Interpol press kit make you as tired and as bleary-eyed as it does me?

mark p (Mark P), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 13:56 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't seen it but I did see a press blurb that used the word élan.

I assure you the use of that word made me so bleary-eyed that I stumbled into the wall the next time I got up.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How about asking why no article (that I have read) has mentioned the fact that Daniel runs Domino Records' U.S. operations and that he owns two NYC record stores?

Yancey (ystrickler), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 14:21 (twenty-three years ago)

The Doors have reunited with Ian Astbury and Stewart Copeland, citing a spiritual void in music. What do you think, and would you consider touring with them?

dan (dan), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 15:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Andy - Morley did use these strategies - with Jerry Garcia or Steve Harley IIRC.

Tom (Groke), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 15:48 (twenty-three years ago)

The question I'd like to ask them is the one no band ever answers, namely: so what do you think you're going to do? I mean, what sort of band do they see themselves becoming -- just staying a really good summary/pastiche band? Trying to move on to a Smiths-like level of variety? Doing "slant" records, like "here's the slow one, here's the rocking one, here's the trippy one?" Are they interesting enough to pull any of these things off?

I think they do a good job, but I can't for the life of me figure out where they would go next. Unfortunately they'd just say what everyone says to that question, which is "blah blah blah we just want to make good music blah blah blah if people like it that's a bonus blah blah blah we try not to overthink it blah blah blah."

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 16:33 (twenty-three years ago)

If Nick Carter ran over your foot in his mini-van, how would you react?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 16:42 (twenty-three years ago)

If you could be any animal in the world, what time would Train A pass Train B?

dave225 (Dave225), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 16:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Me and Paul Morley have exactly the same thought patterns? Whoda thunk it?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 17:14 (twenty-three years ago)

WHere are you at on Makeout Club?

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 10 September 2002 23:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Mummy, what's an Interpol?

I feel stupid asking this, but really, I've never encountered them before - S+D please!

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 12 September 2002 01:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Charlie- look around the site... there's been threads on Interpol in the not so distant past. But the Cliff Notes: NYC band on Matador, getting hyped, heavy debt to Joy Division and a few other British New Wave/post-punk acts.

I rather like their full-length Turn On The Bright Lights, out last month, but that's qualified by their utter lack of originality. "NYC" is a really good song, to these ears. Worth seeking out, probably.

wl, Thursday, 12 September 2002 03:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Cheers...shit, they're on Matador and I don't know who they are? Boy is my face red.

re: Joy Div, as long as Interpol don't sound like Terris I really don't mind how unoriginal they are..;-)

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 12 September 2002 03:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Interpol get way way WAY too much shit thrown at them by people on this board if you ask me. And I have yet to read an adequate reason for this. Then again, I have yet to hear an adequate reason for hating the Strokes so...

Justin M (Justin M), Thursday, 12 September 2002 04:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Adequate reason for hating The Strokes - because they're there. They're the Everest of rock...

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 12 September 2002 04:15 (twenty-three years ago)

The Makeout Club question is the best. By far. I'm gonna use that for an interview I'm doing next week with a different band.

Yancey (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 September 2002 14:49 (twenty-three years ago)

just did the interview.

i still love the record, but... interpol = new york city hipsters SHOCKAH

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 13 September 2002 16:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Where on this board is all the Interpol shit-slinging Justin. I got the impression most people liked them, if only cause they get the chance to mention lots of cool 80s bands.

Admittedly I don't like it them but I don't think I've been that vocal.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 13 September 2002 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I shall buy their album I think. I'll let you know if I like them later.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 14 September 2002 08:24 (twenty-three years ago)

er, didn't really like album at first listen. Maybe they'll get better. They remind me of yo la tengo.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 14 September 2002 13:05 (twenty-three years ago)

tracks 7 and 8 are good. They also sorta remind me of this band that was gonna be the next big thing many moons ago: St. Johnny.
