Our next theme for ;Devon Record Club is scary or frightening records, as we'll next be meeting just before Halloween. A search through the archives has turned up no previous threads on this, so let's ave a new one.

What records do you consider to be scary?

Scott Walker's last two albums and Aphex Twin's Come To Daddy to thread.

'Creepy' ambient music

Halloween mixtapes

TOP THREE ambient records to have in an abandoned galatic space-dock.

Is there any scary music?

Searched ILM for Lustmord.

50,000 raspberries with the face of Peter Ndlovu (aldo), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 07:08 (fourteen years ago)

Often listen to this around Halloween; http://www.discogs.com/Quiet-Village-Fragments-Of-Fear/release/714984 It's mentioned on the Halloween mixtapes thread.

mmmm, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 07:38 (fourteen years ago)

You already said the Scott albums - I love em both, but they're just too frightening to put on most of the time.

dog latin, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 08:48 (fourteen years ago)

As a Brit, I'd never previously heard "Dead Man's Party" by Oingo Boingo, but it's gonna be my Halloween jam this year. Not really scary though.

What about "Dead Mantra" by Dead Skeletons?

dog latin, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 08:50 (fourteen years ago)

The first record that I remember as being frightening was "Disturbance" by The Move.

(The end section)...

Ooh, what about Tom Waits' "Alice" and "The Black Rider"? The former is quite genuinely terrifying while the Black Rider is more flamboyant and theatrical.

dog latin, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 08:51 (fourteen years ago)

haxan cloak
Nurse with wound- Surveillance lounge
Mika Vainio- Life, it eats you up
Anworth Kirk
Kevin Drumm- Sheer Hellish Miasma
sunn- Black one

Runhild Gammelsæter - Amplicon (frightening but oh so good, and ending in a cataclysmic high)

Nurse with Wound - The Surveillance Lounge (seconded)
Coil - Horse Rotorvator
Current 93 - All The Pretty Little Horses
Robert Ashley - Automatic Writing

Young Swell (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 10:40 (fourteen years ago)

"The Elements" by 4Hero. I first heard it on the Energy Flash compilation disc, on the headphones, in the dark. Freaked severely.

Also, "22 Going on 23" by the Butthole Surfers, though in that case it was more disturbed than outright scared.

Duane Barry, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 10:43 (fourteen years ago)

Slayer - Reign In Blood
Darkthrone maybe?

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 10:49 (fourteen years ago)

Swans - Children of God (especially the track 'Blind Love' - felt like I was going to have a heart attack the first time I heard that and it still gives me the creeps now)

Lars and the Lulu Girl (NickB), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 11:03 (fourteen years ago)

Public Image Ltd: Flowers Of Romance

The whole album is frightening, but "Under The House" is the spookiest, scariest song I've ever heard.

zeus, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 11:04 (fourteen years ago)

Peste Noir - I've listened to some of his stuff while cycling at night and had MASSIVE HORRIFYING auditory hallucinations

dog latin, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 11:07 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, and there are a number of great Bob Drake concept albums about haunted houses and shit. Very worthwhile too.

dog latin, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 11:07 (fourteen years ago)

Asmus Tietchens - Die Nacht aus Blei. Love AT, but this is really hard to listen to. Really kind of troubling to me.

My So-Called Squelchy Life (doo dah), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 11:13 (fourteen years ago)

TG's "Hamburger Lady"

Current 93, "Maldoror Is Dead"

Early Whitehouse, preferably Right to Kill

#1 pick though would be Runzelstirn & Gurgelstock's Asshole/Snail Dilemma which features the sound of a woman being tortured

ban this sick stunt (anagram), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 12:44 (fourteen years ago)

I solicited suggestions for an article about scary songs once and the runaway winner was Hamburger Lady, which is so disturbing it makes you want to take a shower afterwards. And what's the song on The Marble Index which sounds like you're being buried alive? Facing the Wind maybe?

Also, Ligeti or anybody influenced by Ligeti.

Science, you guys. Science. (DL), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 13:09 (fourteen years ago)

also you picked my nom which was Rhoda's "The Boiler"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9ccyLzFr7E

I guess this is more creepy than downright scary, but it is very creepy.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 13:15 (fourteen years ago)

Ah, I didn't realise you used to contribute to RR. The Boiler was a great choice.

Science, you guys. Science. (DL), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 13:16 (fourteen years ago)

what's the song on The Marble Index which sounds like you're being buried alive?

Dunno but there's a bit on Psychic TV's Dreams Less Sweet which sounds exactly like that. If you listen on headphones the holophonic technology makes it sound like earth is being chucked over you.

ban this sick stunt (anagram), Wednesday, 12 October 2011 13:17 (fourteen years ago)

still do :) xp

Also, the first couple of minutes of this really scared me the first time I heard it, especially considering that it's credited to a cool jazz trumpeter (though it's the producer Ilhan Mimaroglu who's really behind it). I wasn't expecting anything like that! The album was released in 1971, but the intro wouldn't sound out of place on a dark ambient album released today.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 12 October 2011 13:21 (fourteen years ago)

The Boiler is unlistenably scary, but not in a Halloween way.

And now.

The realms of reality are well and truly breached.

Or something.

Bob Drake and Wolf Eyes are good suggestions. Some Naked City/John Zorn stuff qualifies. Also maybe some things like Messiaen organ music, Ulver, Merzbow.

Listened to EVOL by Sonic Youth alone at night in my house and it creeped me out so much I had to turn it off halfway through,
Great record, though.

There was a relatively widespread rumour around UK schools in the early 80s that if you listened to the b-side to Cars by Gary Numan in the dark, you would certainly have a heart attack and die.
