Nostalgia Alert: Nas w/ Lauryn Hill - "If I Ruled The World"

This track sounds mighty fine, especially given L-Boogie's recent career choices (which I don't mind so much, but this is a Nostalgia Alert). And the video was directed by Hype Williams! BEFORE he was HYPE WILLIAMS! Of course, the same can be said for Nas.

So, yeah, go ahead and talk about how shitty it is.

merely a prequel to the Tears For Fears homage, surely

nas was nas before he was nas in 1996? i don't think that really works. but, yeah, it's a pretty thrilling piece of knowledge that hype williams directed this video. in the way that's it's pretty thrilling to think about the fact that the version of "you're all i need" (best r'n'b/rap collabo ever?) that most people are familiar with can be credited to sean friggin combs. or that bill "faceless and thoroughly exchangeable" paxton directed the legendary "fish heads" film clip (and i believe was a barnes and barnes member?). just reassuring to know that people like this once had some semblance of an aesthetic backbone i suppose.

"aesthetic backbone" was such a ridiculously invalid thing to have said because hype williams so very clearly has one. i was just trying to intellectualize an obnoxiously sentimental impulse to say "some semblance of a soul" or something. but i think i do have a point here.

I wish this thread were titled "Nastalgia Alert" and started a series of similarly titled ones.

Marek, I was thinking of the pre-crucifixion Nas, the one with a li'l less ego and a lot more humility. Compare this song to "One Mic" - in the former, he's just offering ideas, he's not setting himself up as The Man, the documentarian for all this injustice (at least, not implicitly).

Sterling, why don't you get the ball rollin', kid?

B-b-but "Big Poppa" and "One More Chance" came out before this and those were the videos that made Hype Williams themanthemyththeLEGEND...

A Hype Williams chronology: Note he also did high-profile videos for LL Cool J, Craig Mack, K7, Adina Howard, Montell Jordan, The Tony Rich Project, Gravediggaz and Brandy before doing this Nas video.

weird opinions

This is like the best Nas single ever. The synth bleeps in the background + Lauryn singing "and then we'll walk right up to the sun, hand in hand" + Nas's wish fullfilment lyrics = so touching and bittersweet.

popshots really fucked up not calling this thread 'nastalgia alert'

Didn't Nas say on some tune that his last album would be called "Nastalgia"?
