I can ask around at work for recommendations. You might end up with more of a New Mexican than Mexican flavor that way, but nobody is going to know the difference.
― Cal Jeddah (_Rudipherous_), Monday, 24 October 2011 15:51 (fourteen years ago)
Well, there is this thing called the internet...
― Monkey tennis? (Solrac), Monday, 24 October 2011 15:52 (fourteen years ago)
would be helpful Rudipherous - I want some uptempo stuff people can dance to basically. It can be as cod-Mexican as ever. I doubt anyone will notice. Also, things that would sound good in this context, but not necessarily halloween/Mexican, e.g. the Munsters theme has a bit of a desperado-ish vibe to it.

Cafe Tacuba?
― Michael B, Monday, 24 October 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)
If you're opening up the brief EXTRA wide: "96 Tears" by ? and the Mysterians has always had a kind of haunting vibe to these ears. And those dudes are Mexican-American...
― She Got the Shakes, Monday, 24 October 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, I'll play that. Think I will play a bit of Mariachi-style techno too..

How about "El Diablo" by Los Dug Dug's? Halloween-y in theme if not sound, particularly. Great jam, though:

Maybe you could play the beginning of the (very good) tribal guarachero mix Demolition Tape #8 - DJ Crabbe - Codex Crabbe, which has some screaming and whatnot at the very beginning. (I don't know, maybe it's weird to play part of another DJ's mixtape.)
― Cal Jeddah (_Rudipherous_), Monday, 24 October 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)
(Mix I guess, not mixtape. Need to get my terminology straight.)
I actually have a mexican halloween playlist with 20/30 tunes somewhere in my room. I'll post it around the day if I find it.

Also several artists on the Nuevos ricos label like Sonido Lasser Drakar have a slash horro 80s influence (at least in their videos):

La Lupe is "Cuban" not "Mexican" but this song may fit the bill (as well as the album from which it came)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9IRpycppN8
― Art Arfons (La Lechera), Monday, 24 October 2011 21:05 (fourteen years ago)
Moka, had forgotten all about Los Esqueletos song. It was on a record a family member from Mexico gave us years ago.
All this makes me want to go look for downloads of all those 50's and 60's Mexican rock groups on Orfeon!

Crap, I keep forgetting to ask about this, but I think you have enough good suggestions to work with.
― Cal Jeddah (_Rudipherous_), Wednesday, 26 October 2011 06:06 (fourteen years ago)
What's the music the extremely pointy toed boot scene listens to? Read it was some kind of mix between electronica and pre-colonial indigenous sounds from Mexico. You know the scene I mean? Where people have taken pointy toed cowboy boots and extended the toe by upwards of a foot. What I heard of that music sounded interesting but it might not be the easiest to get hold of.

The Nortec Collective?
― dog latin, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 08:52 (fourteen years ago)
Fuck. I just realized that the first Nortec Collective album might be one of the discs I accidentally threw away when I moved.

The main person I was going to ask about Day of the Dead music said there really isn't any specific type of music strongly associated with it--just Mexican music in general.

There's a gap in the Market for mariachi versions of thriller and ghostbusters
― dog latin, Wednesday, 26 October 2011 22:25 (fourteen years ago)
Well not really mariachi but I do have for you their cumbia counterparts:

Yeah he/she is lying. When we were children our teachers made us sing through songs such as 'los esqueletos' 'las calaveras' 'el reloj y la calavera' and such on this holiday so at least those were indeed fairly popular in my region.

I'd go for two specific directions. First one being the Garage/Surf Scene of bands like the aforementioned Las Ultrasonicas, Los Rebel Cats, Lost Acapulco and adding bands like Los Twin Tones, Telekrimen, Yucatán A Go-Go, Los Gatos and Jessy Bulbo.
Second would be playing some psychodelic rock from the 60's 70's with it's chicano influences. Bands like El Ritual, Los Spiders, La Revolución de Emiliano Zapata, Grupo Ciruela, Polvo, Los Free Minds, Los Rockin Devils and maybe I'd try to get some Luchadores movies soundtracks with it's spooky keyboards. Look up for some El Santo and Blue Demon Movies.
