There's only one right answer to this, fuckers. If the wrong lady wins I'm quitting ILX forever. Yes, other people recorded versions too, but they don't count.

Poll Results

OptionVotes
Carole King 10
Aretha Franklin 8

Parker Posey as herself dancing to house music in NYC in 1995 (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 27 October 2011 02:38 (fourteen years ago)

Why is there even a second choice in this poll?

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 27 October 2011 02:55 (fourteen years ago)

CK. Only because I'm sick to death of the Aretha version, and just can't get enough of Tapestry which I just discovered (I only knew It's Too Late-So Far Away-and I Feel the Earth Move)

four years pass...

I wasn't watching last night, but I just looked at the "Natural Woman" Aretha clip from the Kennedy Center ceremony: indeed pretty fantastic. A few too many reaction shots of Carole King, I suppose, but that's the network's decision--it's her night, she can do what she wants. (Couldn't spot Willie Mays...I thought he was being honored too.)

I love it. I've seen it several times. At the beginning she hangs behind the beat, conserving her energy, until she lets it rip exactly in the right place. Loved her piano playing, her makeup, the manner in which she discarded the coat.

A great performance, and the way she discarded her coat was wonderful too. The queen of soul still reigns.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 31 December 2015 13:15 (nine years ago)

Oh, Clemenza, Willie Mays was not an honoree.

i didn't think she could still sing like that - amazing

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 31 December 2015 13:56 (nine years ago)

the manner in which she discarded the coat was breathtaking, letting it fall off her left arm as she raised it toward the heavens

police patrol felt the smell of smoke and found that goat burns (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 31 December 2015 14:21 (nine years ago)

My favourite part is when she sits down at the piano and starts to play, which I take it from Carole King's reaction is not something Aretha does very often anymore.

Mays got the Presidential Medal of Freedom this year--got the two confused.

clemenza, Thursday, 31 December 2015 14:38 (nine years ago)

As her records got hi-tech she abandoned the piano, which is a pity because she can play it percussively and melodically: it isn't mere singer-songwriter dabbling.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 31 December 2015 14:50 (nine years ago)

Her piano playing seems to inspire her vocals

curmudgeon, Thursday, 31 December 2015 16:09 (nine years ago)

Isn't that part of the legend- that when she left Columbia for Atlantic and they took here down to Muscle Shoals, Jerry Wexler let her or had her play the piano and her vocals improved?

Instant Karmagideon Time (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 31 December 2015 16:17 (nine years ago)

Good list, especially number 1 and 13. I would lobby for her version of “I Say a Little Prayer,” love the way it heats up during the chorus, both Aretha and Purdie.

Leslie “POLLS” Hartley (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 26 March 2018 01:12 (seven years ago)

Except it's not Purdie, it's Roger Hawkins, apparently. Fine by me.

No, it's Roger (despite what Bernard's webpage says)

great list! glad whenever Jimmy Lee gets recognised. no love for Angel tho?

gospodin simmel, Monday, 26 March 2018 12:08 (seven years ago)

five years pass...

Found a cheap CD copy of Jazz to Soul last week, which collects early Columbia recordings. A lot of overlap with The Legendary Queen Of Soul, which I already had on vinyl.

Comparing Aretha's covers of "Walk on By" (recorded a few months after Dionne Warwick's) and "I Say a Little Prayer" (closer to two years after the original) is like night and day. She stays so close to the original with "Walk on By"--maybe a small flourish here and there, but very similar. "I Say a Little Prayer," she's off in the stratosphere. (Not that the original isn't great too.)

Searching for the most relevant thread for this, is that right that there's never been a big Aretha poll?
