I'm not voting this time, you won't disenfranchise me again

he carried yellow flowers (DJP), Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:45 (thirteen years ago)

lol I can't really tell between "fuzz" and "distortion", so I'm still voting dist.

V79, Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:47 (thirteen years ago)

"whatever you call the guitar sound on 70s soul songs"

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:48 (thirteen years ago)

voted for slide guitar electric for this one, word to lowell george

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:49 (thirteen years ago)

Hmm will distorted guitar triumph over fuzz guitar?

blank, Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:50 (thirteen years ago)

distorted overall i guess. but obv i do like drone and some others but going with that.
im not a muso so i think distorted is my catch all term.

jjj what type do the mainstream pop rock guitar acts use? like avril or kelly clarkson? that type of thing.

― Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:36 (12 minutes ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

obviously i dont play anything so what is obvious to some isnt to me

― Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:37 (11 minutes ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

that would be distorted electric I guess. also my favourite I guess, nothing IMO beats a nice, harmonically rich distorted sound

i love steel guitar so much

― prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:39 (9 minutes ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

Somewhere between clean and overdriven. Overdriven, I guess.

Hard to eff with acoustic classical, though

― blank, Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:41 (8 minutes ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink

tho 90s/1st half of 00s self would say fuzz. so now i dunno

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:50 (thirteen years ago)

the kyuss fan in may made me vote fuzz even tho i got sick of stoner rock fuzz after about 10 years listening to the genre. mainly due to all the mediocre 10th rate kyuss knock offs. When its done right it still clicks.

i know others will vote distorted anyway

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:52 (thirteen years ago)

*me

Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker, Thursday, 3 November 2011 01:52 (thirteen years ago)

There are examples of all these I really wouldn't want to live without hearing again, so, uh, I don't know.

D. Boon Pickens (WmC), Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:22 (thirteen years ago)

cant believe the pollstarter besmirched "overdriven electric" with the dreaded modern blues label

call all destroyer, Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:25 (thirteen years ago)

fuzz

afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:26 (thirteen years ago)

the way i see it:

fuzz = tube amp (hendrix, zepp)
distorted = solid state amp (gang of 4, pantera)

i like both

cock chirea, Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:32 (thirteen years ago)

ride the dronosaur (jjjusten), Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:34 (thirteen years ago)

cock chirea, Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:43 (thirteen years ago)

Pedal steel

Red Rhodes y'all

velko, Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:52 (thirteen years ago)

broken-sounding

I like a clean electric guitar with a mild amount of chorus and put through a leslie speaker. Which option do I choose? :)

Turrican, Thursday, 3 November 2011 02:56 (thirteen years ago)

That's just "effected electric"

blank, Thursday, 3 November 2011 03:16 (thirteen years ago)

i'm not convinced by the slide guitar option. with that criteria in mind, you'll have to include fingerpicked guitar, tapped guitar, e-bowed guitar, whammy bar abused guitar et al. playing techniques do not compute.

cock chirea, Thursday, 3 November 2011 03:25 (thirteen years ago)

muso!

Wither 'treated guitar'?

What if I'm an idiot who likes to attach a MIDI pickup and make the guitar sound like a trumpet?

I voted "noize" but I really meant "Keith Rowe"

"slide guitar electric" reminded me of this fine instrument:

Where is option for "slight amp overdrive w/chorus like on Big Star's 'Back Of A Car'"?

i couldn't adjust the food knobs (Phil D.), Thursday, 3 November 2011 12:42 (thirteen years ago)

Acoustic classical. Generally I can't stand the sound electric guitars (too much distortion and noise), except for wah-wah and a few other effects, but acoustic wins based on its versatility.

Tuomas, Thursday, 3 November 2011 12:55 (thirteen years ago)

I'm a big fan of cranked tube amp with the volume rolled back on the guitar.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 November 2011 13:06 (thirteen years ago)

Tuomas, you know that electric guitars can be played clean, right?

i couldn't adjust the food knobs (Phil D.), Thursday, 3 November 2011 13:22 (thirteen years ago)

Voted Noize, though fuzz, distorted were pretty close.

irrational, Thursday, 3 November 2011 14:39 (thirteen years ago)

Angular. I like angular guitars. What would they be, then?

i would argue that slide is a fundamental change in the instrument, far more than picking techniques

ride the dronosaur (jjjusten), Thursday, 3 November 2011 15:10 (thirteen years ago)

tbh so is an e-bow

V79, Thursday, 3 November 2011 15:14 (thirteen years ago)

i suppose i could have included bowed guitar and covered all the bases, but my guess is that is not really a contender

ride the dronosaur (jjjusten), Thursday, 3 November 2011 15:16 (thirteen years ago)

ok so what is the lead electric in the verses of Where Is My Mind. Clean? Effected?

ceci n'est pas un nom d'affichage (ledge), Thursday, 3 November 2011 15:16 (thirteen years ago)

every song would be improved with bowed guitar

dense macabre (DJP), Thursday, 3 November 2011 15:17 (thirteen years ago)

but honestly, the most striking omission here is obviously AIR GUITAR

V79, Thursday, 3 November 2011 15:22 (thirteen years ago)

rlly like the way the guitars sound on botch's an anthology of dead ends, that's good that

This is a crazy poll. I love the sound of a Tele pretty much straight into the amp (tho almost all "clean" sounding electric has at least some sort of effecting going on.) I also LOOOOOVE reverb (but I'm not nearly as big on chorus and delay) and I love the distorted sound of Elmore James. But Elmore's a slide player.

Feel like I'm being forced to choose between Don Rich on Buck Owens' records and Hank Marvin and Hound Dog Taylor. Can't do it.

Blue Doggie Sweater (Dan Peterson), Thursday, 3 November 2011 16:08 (thirteen years ago)

Me, I like all of those to various extents, but really like Univibes and flangers and other sorts of '70s-swirliness, which I collectively choose to characterize as DISTORTED ELECTRIC.

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 3 November 2011 17:27 (thirteen years ago)

(Actually kinda reminds me of that crappy-but-fun Zoom 505 pedal I bought, which featured "Metal" and "Distortion" and "Fuzz" and "Overdrive" settings (but no "Grunge", surprisingly), all of which were just variations on your basic cement-block sound.)
