lol shit I posted one on FB today :( Last resort only when other non-live version not available.

Worst trend

Youth Ya Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 4 November 2011 15:24 (thirteen years ago)

After careful deliberation and the consultation of a panel of experts, Cee-Lo Green.

The Reverend, Friday, 4 November 2011 15:25 (thirteen years ago)

FFM iirc you posted a fan-made lyrics video, which is different than this

Hardy Rock Anthem (crüt), Saturday, 5 November 2011 07:11 (thirteen years ago)

how can you hate cee-lo green?

cee-lo green is the soul machine.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 5 November 2011 07:17 (thirteen years ago)

i don't know how you can even get angry about this stuff tbh. they're stupid but they also serve a purpose even if you don't like them, since now it gives labels an excuse to have an official youtube for a song that a real video hasn't been filmed for yet, so if you want to listen to that song you're not hunting through a bunch of youtubes uploaded by fans that get taken down or speeded up or muted or whatever.

whiney is this really THE WORST TREND you can think of, of all the trends in the internet or the music industry or whatever right now?

prettyliketynandelong (some dude), Saturday, 5 November 2011 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

I knew Whiney would have my back on this one.

I just hate anything that reeks this much of music industry attention-seeking. Also these videos are complete garbage + irritating to watch.

I guess it doesn't help that most of these songs/lyrics are pretty awful to begin with

Hardy Rock Anthem (crüt), Sunday, 6 November 2011 08:47 (thirteen years ago)

(though I don't have a problem w/that Wale song)

Hardy Rock Anthem (crüt), Sunday, 6 November 2011 08:48 (thirteen years ago)

if you don't think a song called "lotus flower bomb" has awful lyrics then

some dude, Sunday, 6 November 2011 11:51 (thirteen years ago)

I like them only because the YouTube preview still/thumb gives me all kinds of ideas about the song so I never have to listen to it, for example I am now assuming that Derulo's new single interpolates "I'll Melt With You" and "La Bamba."

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 6 November 2011 15:59 (thirteen years ago)

No the worst trend is Internet pedants who don't understand hyperbole

kind of long for a lyric video for every loutallica song

this

da croupier, Sunday, 6 November 2011 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

though honestly i'm surprised record companies would rather point out your average pop lyric than just post the song with a lovely photo of their 360-deal artist

da croupier, Sunday, 6 November 2011 18:15 (thirteen years ago)

there's an awesome gif of a glowing, flying "eh" hiding in that derulo one for some enterprising soul

da croupier, Sunday, 6 November 2011 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

haha I have plenty of problems w/the lyrics to "Lotus Flower Bomb" but the song itself is fine

this is seriously just one more worthless step in reducing bands to a stream of CONTENT THAT HAS TO HAVE VIRAL ENERGY as opposed to an entity who releases a good song. I have publicist pitching me the privlege of premiering these things now

Youth Ya Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 7 November 2011 01:20 (thirteen years ago)

when Drake was on SNL a few weeks ago he had this whole 'lyrics video' type screen behind him projecting the words of the song, and it had mad typos in it

some dude, Monday, 7 November 2011 01:31 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i dunno how this is something worth getting mad about. pop stars being pushed as product rather than artistes by multninational corporations shock horror.

if i listened to that bullshit id know the answer to your question but even then probably not

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Monday, 7 November 2011 02:21 (thirteen years ago)

also up until now this thread has mostly featured hot indie artists like jason derulo and chad kroeger's nickelback so

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Monday, 7 November 2011 02:22 (thirteen years ago)

PEDANT TIME

patrick wolf's latest album is released by a subsidiary of mercury records which is a subsidiary of universal music group

some dude, Monday, 7 November 2011 02:26 (thirteen years ago)

tbh every band in the world becoming OKGO and making stupid 'high concept' music videos pisses me off way more than this stuff

some dude, Monday, 7 November 2011 02:27 (thirteen years ago)

also honestly whenever i pull up youtube to listen to a song the tab gets clicked off pretty quick and the song plays in the background and its not as if i spend those four minutes staring wistfully at a picture of roxette so these videos can feature spinning goatses for all i care.

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Monday, 7 November 2011 02:32 (thirteen years ago)

yeah this also

some dude, Monday, 7 November 2011 02:36 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i dunno how this is something worth getting mad about. pop stars being pushed as product rather than artistes by multninational corporations shock horror.

worth getting mad about, probably not. but do I get mad about pop stars being pushed as product? absolutely. it's cultural junk food. get it the fuck away.

this is seriously just one more worthless step in reducing bands to a stream of CONTENT THAT HAS TO HAVE VIRAL ENERGY as opposed to an entity who releases a good song.

did the spirit of andy rooney violently inhabit your body recently?

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Monday, 7 November 2011 02:59 (thirteen years ago)

it was strangely more erotic than violent

so do people actually watch these things, or is just so that the thing is in the youtube format because lots of people listen to music that way?

sarahel, Monday, 7 November 2011 03:02 (thirteen years ago)

i've been spending the last half hour mulling possible "goatse rock anthem" jokes but i think in the endvim just gonna throw it out there

strongo hulkington's ghost dad, Monday, 7 November 2011 03:03 (thirteen years ago)

like i would be blissfully ignorant of spinning goatses unless someone on facebook posted the video saying "omg spinning goatses at 1:45!" or something -- i don't really watch the videos

sarahel, Monday, 7 November 2011 03:05 (thirteen years ago)

mostly I just hate the literalness of the form and the lame flashy effects

fill up ass of emoticon fart (crüt), Monday, 7 November 2011 03:06 (thirteen years ago)

I envy you tbh. I spent a drunk weekend dealing with people getting smirky about Coldplay.

five years pass...

how does anybody feel about these now? they rack up MASSIVE views I'm told and labels pitch them to artists obviously the appeal is partly "we don't have to spend a fuckload on a video" but they've really managed to get a foothold in the past year or two I feel like. like the metal labels who still send me promos are always sending me links to Official Lyric Videos and it feels like this has upticked recently

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Wednesday, 8 February 2017 21:03 (eight years ago)

i still hate them!

example (crüt), Wednesday, 8 February 2017 21:04 (eight years ago)

i think i'm the only person who hates them this much though

example (crüt), Wednesday, 8 February 2017 21:04 (eight years ago)

i don't really like these but they're not nearly as bad as music videos with long (anything over like 10 seconds) intros before the song starts which are my biggest music video pet peeve.

ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 February 2017 21:08 (eight years ago)

if they're visually creative they can be fine, if they're just gonna be the text overlaid on some generic images/video clips, i'd rather just have a static image of the album cover and save bandwidth

ciderpress, Wednesday, 8 February 2017 21:11 (eight years ago)

I hate them much more clear-headedly than when this thread was started. if you watch one for a song you like it can actually ruin it - big underline and highlighter emphasis on every! ☆SINGLE☆ >>>> Word. really destructive to a song.

tales of a scorched-earth nothing (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 9 February 2017 03:15 (eight years ago)

they seem both weirdly against the process of listening to a song as it normally works and against the process of reading a printed lyric as it actually works

the ghost of tom, choad (thomp), Thursday, 9 February 2017 04:01 (eight years ago)

i have never seen one for metal, i suppose it would save me a trip to dark lyrics dot com

they are indeed the worst

niels, Friday, 10 February 2017 11:56 (eight years ago)

these are pretty useless, what's next, official music videos made entirely from anime clips?

music industry is entirely out of ideas

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 10 February 2017 12:16 (eight years ago)

I'm assuming this still cost less than yr average pop video but still weird how blown out these have become
