All records should be like this one: Discuss

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 11 September 2002 23:59 (twenty-three years ago)

Good to see you are no more intelligent than when I last encountered you, Graham. Rye still getting you down? Is it just the fear of Salford? Or are you simply just not very clever?

Helpful, Thursday, 12 September 2002 01:55 (twenty-three years ago)

yes I know it's bloody Asperger's Syndrome that makes me blow the gaff in such a way, but

a) Rye is wonderful and I don't like people who slag it off

b) of all the songs in all the world he had to choose a "collaboration" between the whining harridan of Llanelli and the hydra-headed multi-Ringo that was bloody Space?

robin carmody, Thursday, 12 September 2002 02:03 (twenty-three years ago)

And hating the song justifies you abusing someone like that?

Helpful, Thursday, 12 September 2002 02:08 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck - I think I might have Asperger's syndrome. My life is beginning to make sense now.

James Blount, Thursday, 12 September 2002 04:05 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I hate Graham. The hatred is mutual.

robin carmody (robin carmody), Thursday, 12 September 2002 04:10 (twenty-three years ago)

the whining harridan of Llanelli and the hydra-headed multi-Ringo that was bloody Space

Nice wording, cheers...

Against my better judgement, I liked that tom jones song. Then again, there was a time (when Female Of The Species first came out) when I thought Space were going to save pop...bought a t-shirt and everything. How wrong can you be?

Charlie (Charlie), Thursday, 12 September 2002 04:18 (twenty-three years ago)

What's this all about. Is this really Robin? And why the dissing?

Or am I missing something? Hello Robin.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 12 September 2002 06:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't make me come in there and tell you about the Welsh dream!

Fly fly, swoop swoop, rock rock, roll roll...

kate, Thursday, 12 September 2002 08:13 (twenty-three years ago)

For goodness sakes Robin (or "Robin" since the Robin who posted on these boards was very rarely so rude) Graham ACTUALLY LIVES in Rye and therefore is perfectly entitled to call it a dump or boring or say whatever he likes about it. God knows I don't see eye-to-eye with Graham sometimes but he's been very honest lately in sharing stuff with the boards and deserves a great deal better than this kind of ugly, embittered trolling.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 12 September 2002 08:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Alright, I should clarify what I meant. Amongst other things: At the time, indie chart-hopefuls collaborating with each other seemed to be a really natural thing to be doing, and the idea of new bands trying to get somewhere on their own seem totally doomed to failure. So yes, the question is: "Chart-hopeful indie bands would do well to acknowledge each other exist (on record): Discuss".

(I hope the genre I'm talking about isn't too vague, i.e. whatever links Space and Catatonia)

Graham (graham), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes but better to bring back the split single than cause things like The Ballad Of Tom Jones to exist.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:06 (twenty-three years ago)

I did like that song Lush and Jarvis Cocker did together, even though it was kind of corny.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:15 (twenty-three years ago)

The Ballad of Tom Jones is fantastic you just not very clever person you (not that I'd ever like to own a copy).

Graham (graham), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:33 (twenty-three years ago)

This is a side question (not my cleverness) - has a split single ever got into the Top 40?

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Buffalo Tom - Going Underground/Noel Gallagher and Steve Craddock - Carnation #6. I don't suppose that counts though.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:44 (twenty-three years ago)

The Billy Bragg / Wet Wet Wet thing from Sgt Pepper Knew My Father? Similar example to Graham's.

All those reggae singles (e.g. Susan Cadogan: Hurt So good b/w The Upsetters: Dub So Good) also nearly but not quite.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 12 September 2002 11:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Similar example to Tims: Manic Street Preachers Theme From M*A*S*H / Fatima Mansions "Everything I Do I Do it for you". NME Ruby Trax.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 12 September 2002 12:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Oha and Glam Rock Cops of course by Carter was backed by Carter covers by other no mark indie bands (Family Cat/EMF I fear)

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 12 September 2002 12:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh yes and the Heavenly / Fred EP.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 12 September 2002 12:37 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, I'm afraid it was the real Robin upthread. I suppose I was playing somewhat against type.

I simply cannot understand the mindset of someone who doesn't like Rye. But then, I can't understand a *lot* of mindsets ...

I suppose I just hate being reminded that 1998 existed, which is why I dislike "The Ballad Of Tom Jones" so irrationally. But EVEN WORSE: "calling all avenging angels, angels, ***kick-ass angels***" (use other description of angels please!!!)

robin carmody (robin carmody), Thursday, 12 September 2002 16:45 (twenty-three years ago)

"kick-ass angles" is the greatest thing ever, as is the song it comes from.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 12 September 2002 18:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I suppose I just hate being reminded that 1998 existed

Classic! Hope it wasn't really that bad, Robin.

Enid Roach (Enid Roach), Thursday, 12 September 2002 19:47 (twenty-three years ago)

how can beautiful Rye spawn someone with such unbelievably shite taste?

I will never, ever, ever understand

robin carmody (robin carmody), Friday, 13 September 2002 01:39 (twenty-three years ago)

The SPace revival starts here!

(help me, i'm not sure if I'm joking anymore)

Graham (graham), Friday, 13 September 2002 07:16 (twenty-three years ago)

that Nirvana/Jesus Lizard split single almost got in the top ten...and wasnt the Manics cover of 'Suicide Is Painless' backed with something by the Trashcan Sinatras?

blueski, Friday, 13 September 2002 11:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Robin is to the countryside what ethan is to hiphop.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 13 September 2002 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Nelly!

gareth (gareth), Friday, 13 September 2002 13:14 (twenty-three years ago)

The Manics cover of Theme from Mash is b/w (Everything I do) I do it for you by Fatima Mansions. AND a recording of the scene in the NME offices on the morning Ed Sirrs comes in with the photographs of the '4 Real' incident. 'Well, I'm gore editor, aren't I?''It doesn't say T-Rex, he's spelt it wrong' and other classics.

Richard Jones (scarne), Friday, 13 September 2002 14:27 (twenty-three years ago)

"if you wanna take a (tractor) ride with me ..."

(have I ever made a lamer attempt to keep a joke going !?)

robin carmody (robin carmody), Friday, 13 September 2002 23:32 (twenty-three years ago)

This is a side question (not my cleverness) - has a split single ever got into the Top 40?

Split single that was No.1 - Clash "Should I stay or should i go?"
Big Audio Dynamite - "Rush"

doesn't count coz Mick Jones was in both, presumably?

MarkH (MarkH), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 13:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Amazing thread.

Personally I like Rye - where I once found two second-hand copies of the (first?) Strawberry Switchblade LP - though I've never lived there.

'Ballad of Tom Jones': bad.

'Avenging angels' line: also bad.

Bragg's #1: I like it, have got the 7".

1998: b-but what about the World Cup Final?

the pinefox (the pinefox), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 13:16 (twenty-three years ago)

'Ballad of Tom Jones': bad

Avenging Angels: supabad!

I've always thought that the geniusish moments on space records were producer led, rather than any actual input from the band. Pretty solid job done on the first LP, I think there was a KLF connection somewhere. The second one had 'Avenging Angels', and, um, not much else. Did anyone hear the last LP?

wish i coulda tangled with the big man RC in those days no hype lol

blueski, Friday, 18 July 2008 10:42 (seventeen years ago)

I was just going to contribute to this, then saw that I already had. It was very odd, though. Graham started off by praising a pretty terrible record (I was just thinking earlier about how naff Catatonia became, Mulder & Scully FFS) and I kind of felt like RC's polemic was justified on that account, except that RC seemed to think it was all about Rye and not about the actual record, where I don't think the thread was supposed to be about Rye or places at all, just bad records.

the pinefox, Friday, 18 July 2008 12:18 (seventeen years ago)

eight years pass...

You just like me 'cause of my CYMRU t shirt
