Hey, make me listen to Doom Metal and make me a better person

This is one of those gaping holes in my skills as metal dude, but i need entry points because it is a vast sea full of stuff that i often dont get. I like Reverend Bizarre, and smart people say that judging from other stuff i like sludge seems to be also a good start. Harvey Milk is awesome. I just got YOB for the first time about 3 months ago. idk. help.

though i agree it's not the be all and end all

i even listen to stoner rock and dont indulge (unlike most stoner rockers)

some of my defaults go-tos for when i'm buzzed are electric ladyland, sandinista, and some ambient stuff like cluster and klaus schulze. i'm always able to appreciate stoner/doom without the buds.

sorry, was derailed on respnding to any of this because of FURNACE CRISIS 11/11/11 but i will get back to this soon. right now i am grumpy and cold. which seems like the perfect time to indulge in this but i make no promises

I can't touch weed, it produces a horrific psychotic effect in me. Which is exactly why I like listening to doom and drone. It doesn't get me high of course but it gives me the similar kind of meditative space, ie. psychedelic effect. Also the best of this music played loud produces a reaction in me that I never got from being in church as a kid, the idea of being in the presence of something bigger and older than you; except the shades are usually dark not light.

I took some acid and went to see Electric Wizard once and realised that I was connected to everyone in the room but not in a positive uplifting way but in a really unpleasant, call of cthulu kind of way. It was brilliant.

I'm wondering what Winter sounds like to someone who hears them for the first time in 2011. In 1991 that record hit me like a ton of bricks, there was nothing around that even sounded remotely like it. But after twenty years of doom bands following in their footsteps, how fresh does it sound?

I heard the Winter album for the first time about a month ago. It sounds like a chopped 'n' screwed death metal album. Weird drum production, though i guess not for the time it was recorded. It sounds pretty cool, but I'm no doom metal afficianado (though it's the kind of metal I listen to the most).

Yeah I heard Winter for the first time this year too, via the Southern Lord reissue. It definitely didn't sound as original as it did back in '91, but I still could feel why people would dig it as much as they did.

this is a good shout and I was thinking of that song a few days ago in relation to that Kerrang heaviest albums ever list - in particular my thought that it would be much more useful to list stuff that was gamechanging at some point down the line, rather than necessarily ~THE HEAVIEST~ as we sit here now

now I don't know if there are actually a lot of bands who were galvanised by a 25 minute (or whatever it is) song off the first Lard record but from where I'm sitting it predates so much stuff that's slow and disgusting and epic
