This is one of those gaping holes in my skills as metal dude, but i need entry points because it is a vast sea full of stuff that i often dont get. I like Reverend Bizarre, and smart people say that judging from other stuff i like sludge seems to be also a good start. Harvey Milk is awesome. I just got YOB for the first time about 3 months ago. idk. help.

Right Justin, personally, imho and all that shit, you could do worse than getting the following albums, some of them probably aren't strictly 100% doom but who cares? I'd happily listen to any of these right now.
Electric Wizard - DopethroneElectric Wizard - Let Us PreyCathedral - EndtymeBong Ripper - Satan Worshiping DoomWarhorse - As Heaven Turns To AshCathedral - The Ethereal MirrorThorr's Hammer - DommedagsnattPentegram - Be ForwarnedYob - AtmaSleep - DopesmokerSleep - Sleep's Holy Mountain

I can't touch weed, it produces a horrific psychotic effect in me. Which is exactly why I like listening to doom and drone. It doesn't get me high of course but it gives me the similar kind of meditative space, ie. psychedelic effect. Also the best of this music played loud produces a reaction in me that I never got from being in church as a kid, the idea of being in the presence of something bigger and older than you; except the shades are usually dark not light.
I took some acid and went to see Electric Wizard once and realised that I was connected to everyone in the room but not in a positive uplifting way but in a really unpleasant, call of cthulu kind of way. It was brilliant.

I'm wondering what Winter sounds like to someone who hears them for the first time in 2011. In 1991 that record hit me like a ton of bricks, there was nothing around that even sounded remotely like it. But after twenty years of doom bands following in their footsteps, how fresh does it sound?

I heard the Winter album for the first time about a month ago. It sounds like a chopped 'n' screwed death metal album. Weird drum production, though i guess not for the time it was recorded. It sounds pretty cool, but I'm no doom metal afficianado (though it's the kind of metal I listen to the most).
― International Waters, Monday, 14 November 2011 17:13 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah I heard Winter for the first time this year too, via the Southern Lord reissue. It definitely didn't sound as original as it did back in '91, but I still could feel why people would dig it as much as they did.

this is a good shout and I was thinking of that song a few days ago in relation to that Kerrang heaviest albums ever list - in particular my thought that it would be much more useful to list stuff that was gamechanging at some point down the line, rather than necessarily ~THE HEAVIEST~ as we sit here now
now I don't know if there are actually a lot of bands who were galvanised by a 25 minute (or whatever it is) song off the first Lard record but from where I'm sitting it predates so much stuff that's slow and disgusting and epic
haven't listened to Lard for about a thousand years :/

totally a great idea! I have a few albums already spring to mind that I think were "gamechangers" ie - transformed a genre or created a sub-genre, or the specific sound was hugely influential on future bands...

I've listened to doom off and on over the years, but for some reason, probably because I tracked down a bunch of stoner/doom blogs the last couple years, I found way more doom I liked in 2011 than the previous decade combined!
My top entries:
1. Lord Vicar - Signs Of Osiris (The Church Within)2. Krux - III - He Who Sleeps Amongst The Stars (GMR)3. Obrero - Mortui Vivos Docent (Night Tripper)4. 40 Watt Sun - The Inside Room (Cyclone Empire/Metal Blade)5. YOB - Atma (Profound Lore)6. Obake (Rarenoise)7. Pentagram - Last Rites (Metal Blade)8. The Gates Of Slumber - The Wretch (Rise Above)9. Glitter Wizard - Solar Hits (Archers Guild)10. Black Pyramid - II (MeteorCity)11. Green & Wood - Devil's Plan (Cyclopean)12. Leather Nun America - Kult Occult (PsycheDOOMelic)13. Orchid - Capricorn (Doom Dealer)14. The Wounded Kings - In The Chapel Of The Black Hand (I Hate Records)15. Ice Dragon - The Sorrowful Sun (Ice Dragon)16. SubRosa - No Help For The Mighty One (Profound Lore)17. Esoteric - Paragon Of Dissonance (Season Of Mist)18. Premonition 13 - 13 (Volcom)19. Hands Of Orlac (Horror)20. Black Capricorn (12th Records)21. SerpentCult - Raised By Wolves (Listenable)22. Black Pyramid - Stormbringer (MeteorCity)23. Crumbling Ghost (Withered Hand)24. Sólstafir - Svartir Sandar (Season Of Mist)25. Devil - Time To Repent (Soulseller)26. Acid Witch - Stoned (Hell's Headbangers)
There's other stuff in my stoner list with strong doomy elements like Elder, Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats, Eggnogg, Belzebong, and some sludge bands like Beastwars, Dopethrone, Demonic Death Judge, Wizard Smoke, Weedeater, Dark Buddha Rising, Slabdragger, etc. Mountains of doomy doom and doom-related stuff!
