Morgenbladet Top 30 of 100 - The best Norwegian albums ever according to Norwegian musicians

Message Bookmarked

This is a list that has been published in the Norwegian newspaper Morgenbladet (a biweekly paper read largely by Norwegian intellectuals), the past months. The task has been to have professional Norwegian musicians vote over the best Norwegian albums ever. The list is a top 100, but this poll only has space for 30 (avoiding too many voting options, and ILM polls don't allow more than 50 anyway). The final 10 (first 10) were published today, so this is the final list then.

The complete top 100 can be found at http://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morgenbladet_topp_100

And I know most of these will be unfamiliar to most. A couple of these albums I had never even heard of myself. (Opaque and the Bjørgums)

can't really see beyond Jokke & Valentinerne here

Ridin' Skyrims (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 12 November 2011 12:35 (thirteen years ago)

Looked for Biosphere or Bel Canto since I know those, didn't find. (Biosphere's Patashnik is on #33 in the complete 100 list, Bel Canto's White-Out Conditions isn't on there)

StanM, Saturday, 12 November 2011 12:38 (thirteen years ago)

"Shimmering Warm & Bright" was the most popular Bel Canto album here, I am kind of surprised that one didn't make the list. Would suppose they would be the kind of act that might appeal to fellow musicians too.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:43 (thirteen years ago)

I guess they may have gone for Susanne Sundfør or Anja Garbarek instead maybe, those two albums are not completely unlike Bel Canto, in spite of (like Bel Canto) also having very much their own distinctive style.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:45 (thirteen years ago)

Noodle Vague: I consider that particular album to be my least favourite Jokke album though.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 12 November 2011 13:49 (thirteen years ago)

Geir i was joking, don't really know them, sorry. Disappointed on no Bel Canto or Fra Lippo Lippi tho.

Motorpsycho - Timothy's Monster

Marty Innerlogic, Saturday, 12 November 2011 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

Surprised that 'Anniemal' or anything by Ketil Bjornstad didn't make the top 100. Geir, which of these should I check out?

don't think I've ever not voted for Turbonegro where they've been a poll option

Buster Mottrhymes (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 12 November 2011 17:05 (thirteen years ago)

Kjøtt! Voting for proper oldschool pønkefolka punks Kjøtt, because they are pretty good, and because if I don't nobody else will.

(ok, I only really know Turbonegro and a couple of the Motorpsycho albums, which are good, and Melody AM, which I would like a lot more if it was just Eple on repeat 10 times, and I can't even remember if that's one of the Supersilents I've heard or not. What else should I check out?)

Nothing even close to Annie here. Kjetil Bjørnstad I am not that familiar with other than a few select tracks, but I guess there are few people quite like him too.

Geir i was joking, don't really know them

Jokke is actually a legend of sorts. He died of an overdose in 1999. First got a reputation as a raunchy punker writing songs about partying and getting drunk, but there was considerably more to him. One of the greatest Norwegian singer/songwriters ever, a great poet getting inspiration from his own troubled life, which was always a lot about drugs and alcohol, but also about a typical working class background. Added to this was an ever increasing ability to master various genres, and a lot of very strong melodies (which, you know, matters to me ;) )
He is very much a product of Norway (or, more like, Eastern Oslo) and wouldn't appeal to people with no knowledge of the Norwegian language, but he is undeniably one of the great, great, great names in Norwegian rock music.

TURBONEGRO

Princess Nancy (jjjusten), Thursday, 17 November 2011 00:47 (thirteen years ago)

What else should I check out?

I would say there is nothing even remotely like Motorpsycho out there. They do their own thing, and have done their own thing since the very beginning.
Turbonegro I believe influenced an entire early 00s Oslo hardcore scene, but not my kinda style, so I don't know very well what would be the most obvious references.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 17 November 2011 00:48 (thirteen years ago)

Jokke is actually a legend of sorts.

yeah i did some reading afterwards, all those Norwegian garage bands remind me of Rose Tattoo somehow

Ridin' Skyrims (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 17 November 2011 07:56 (thirteen years ago)

Would've voted for Biosphere if he was on the list, none of the stuff on it interests me that much. I guess Meoldy A.M. is pretty good?

Tuomas, Thursday, 17 November 2011 08:20 (thirteen years ago)

surely vømmøl deserves at least a mention if a group like knutsen & ludvigsen are on there? or are they not as influential as i thought?

delillos are great, as is the royksopp album. had to go w/ a-ha in the end since it's such a masterpiece of pop, not as knowledgable as i should be about most of these though admittedly

Voted Anja Garbarek's Balloon Mood. It's a little dated now but when it came out it really sounded like the future, unlike most of the hoary pubrock on this list. I'd rate Annie, Sondre Lerche, Marit Larsen and Kaizers Orchestra over most of this stuff, but then again I guess I'm about twenty years younger than the people who made the selections. I also think it's pretty stupid that these lists never feature any metal considering it's what we're demonstrably the best at.

surely vømmøl deserves at least a mention if a group like knutsen & ludvigsen are on there? or are they not as influential as i thought?

Vømmøl were very much a product of the Norwegian people's "no" to membership in the EU (then EEC) in 1972, which was very much a rural protest against more urban based politicians. Vømmøl captured the zeitgeist perfectly by being this very rural thing, with influence from Norwegian folk music, with leftist lyrics performed in very obvious accents. They were very much of their time, and may not have quite the same stature by now. Although not Top 30, they do have one album in the Top 100 though.
Knutsen & Ludvigsen, on the other hand, influenced an entire generation of lyricists with their naivist lyrics, plus they completely revolutionized Norwegian "children's music" with their anarchic approach.

but then again I guess I'm about twenty years younger than the people who made the selections.

The list has actually been criticized for having way too much of a now bias. Many legendary albums from the 60s and 70s are lacking.

I also think it's pretty stupid that these lists never feature any metal considering it's what we're demonstrably the best at.

The Top 100 has its shared of metal a bit down the lists, but metal is still a bit too much of an "extreme" genre to appeal to anyone but metal fans.

Would've voted for Biosphere if he was on the list, none of the stuff on it interests me that much. I guess Meoldy A.M. is pretty good?

You could of course go straight to the roots and go for Arne Nordheim, Norway's own Stockhausen? :)

I suppose the votes for Jokke and Kåre were Norwegian ones. Not from me though.

Oh bah I was sure I'd voted for Kjøtt. Not that it would've made a lot of difference...

slightly offtopic, but what's the norwegian music scene like these days geir? from an outsider's perspective it seems there are a few pop and pop/rock groups like gabrielle and kaizers orchestra that are the main hitmakers. are there alternative local groups/genres gaining national attention? i know it's kind of hard to avoid the american/europop influence so i'm just curious
