list metal albums that changed the face of the genre.

How about starting with

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
Led Zeppelin - II
Judas Priest - Stained Class
Van Halen - Van Halen
Motörhead - Overkill
Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Killing Joke - Killing Joke (alexinnyc bait)
Venom - Black Metal
Metallica - Ride The Lightning
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion
Bathory - Bathory
Trouble - Psalm 9
Candlemass - Epicus Doomus Metallicus
Death - Scream Bloody Gore
Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Burzum - Burzum
Godflesh - Streetcleaner
At The Gates - The Red in the Sky Is Ours
Korn - Korn (you may not like it but it started the biggest 90s genre)

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 18:12 (thirteen years ago)

Winter - Into Darkness
Eyehategod - In the Name of Suffering
Melvins - Gluey Porch Treatments

and may as well get Nirvana - Nevermind out of the way. You can argue til the cows come home whether it was metal or not but it did change the genre

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 18:16 (thirteen years ago)

if only there was somewhere on the internet to discuss the importance of Slayer and Burzum

shiroibasketshoes & tuxedos (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 18:18 (thirteen years ago)

Napalm Death - Scum

shiroibasketshoes & tuxedos (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 18:19 (thirteen years ago)

well it would be a bit daft to leave them out
xp

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

what was the first djent album?

shiroibasketshoes & tuxedos (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

it would have been the second post if i had

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 18:20 (thirteen years ago)

something by Meshuggah
xp

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

shiroibasketshoes & tuxedos (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 18:21 (thirteen years ago)

Czech blastcore and pagan culture

latebloomer, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

Whiney and latebloomer are right this is a stupid pointless thread on a stupid pointless genre. Lock thread kthanksbye

BlindWillyPuller, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

wow i don't know who BlindWillyPuller is but he sure sounds butthurt

Ridin' Skyrims (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 20:13 (thirteen years ago)

Earth - Earth 2
Big Black - Atomizer
Discharge - Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 20:44 (thirteen years ago)

blindwillypuller helpful as ever

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 21:21 (thirteen years ago)

Mastodon - Leviathan
Sunn0)))) - Black One
Slipknot - Iowa

This is actually a tricky exercise, disassociating "records I like" from "records I think are influential".

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 21:40 (thirteen years ago)

Cradle Of Filth - The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh

Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion

Morbid Tales, surely?

Siegbran, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 21:49 (thirteen years ago)

Emperor - In The Nightside Eclipse (synth-led BM)
Entombed - Left Hand Path (Sunlight studio sound)
Dissection - The Somberlain (Gothenburg sound)

Siegbran, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 21:54 (thirteen years ago)

Faith No More - The Real Thing
Sepultura - Chaos AD

FNM aren't metal per se but so influential for all the rap metal stuff they influenced.

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 22:01 (thirteen years ago)

Sepultura - Chaos AD

Sepultura turning into Pantera was game changing?

Siegbran, Tuesday, 15 November 2011 22:02 (thirteen years ago)

Hmmm okay, possibly I put that in as a result of "when I was listening to metal", but it seemed to me that Chaos AD was a blueprint for a lot of stuff around at that time, e.g. Machine Head and um others?

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 22:08 (thirteen years ago)

"when I was FIRST listening to metal" above

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 22:10 (thirteen years ago)

Chaos AD was probably an influence on nu-metal

and siegbran, to mega therion was where celtic frost started adding the avant/classical stuff

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 22:23 (thirteen years ago)

"Dissection - The Somberlain (Gothenburg sound)"

Wouldn't the Gothenburg sound be a Death Metal album (In Flames, At The Gates, etc)?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 22:27 (thirteen years ago)

Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
Bathory - Hammerheart

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 22:29 (thirteen years ago)

Def Leppard - Pyromania
Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction

next thing she's shaving my skrillex (NickB), Tuesday, 15 November 2011 22:33 (thirteen years ago)

Why would I be butthurt, noodle vag? List threads are the bane of ilm. Surely you agree?

BlindWillyPuller, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 00:05 (thirteen years ago)

sorry, i meant sockhurt

Ridin' Skyrims (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 16 November 2011 00:13 (thirteen years ago)

dont feed the trolls

i guess dream theater must have changed the game for prog metal, but is anyone going to admit to knowing any albums?

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Wednesday, 16 November 2011 18:55 (thirteen years ago)

I will. Images And Words is a really important album in prog-metal-spheres, and when I was sixteen and a teenage metalprog-guitarnerd they were a very big influence on me.

Haven't listened to that album in years by the way.

Marty Innerlogic, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

haha thanks for your honesty!

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Wednesday, 16 November 2011 19:03 (thirteen years ago)

btw did i pick the right DM albums?

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Wednesday, 16 November 2011 19:05 (thirteen years ago)

Regarding Djent: I think Meshuggah's Nothing-album was the first proper Djent-album. Destroy Erase Improve and Chaosphere don't have that bouncy quality to their riffs (I also prefer these two albums over Nothing and Catch 33, though I really enjoy ObZen).

Marty Innerlogic, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 20:29 (thirteen years ago)

xp Obituary - Slowly We Rot
Some Morbid Angel maybe?

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Wednesday, 16 November 2011 20:55 (thirteen years ago)

Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction

Of course it was a massive hit, but I'd say this was more the pinnacle & the beginning of the end for hair metal than influential/gamechanging.

Siegbran, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 21:26 (thirteen years ago)

Venom - Black Metal -- gave a genre its name, cemented satanism as a metal trope for all time.

Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance -- made it okay to do sound engineering and stereo effects in metal and use STUDIO MAGIC to its fullest. All the NWOHBM bands followed suit. You could also blame this album for glam metal later on.

Great Fushigi Master (Viceroy), Wednesday, 16 November 2011 22:00 (thirteen years ago)

Burzum - Burzum

^^ tho its relevance it's undeniable, i think of 'filosofem' as the "gamechanging" burzum album (maybe 'hvis lyset tar oss).

rusty_allen, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 23:37 (thirteen years ago)

couldn't 'morningrise' or 'my arms, your hearse' by opeth be considered, also..? tho they might be put in the whole gothenburg sound, i guess.

rusty_allen, Wednesday, 16 November 2011 23:43 (thirteen years ago)

Amebix - Arise!
Anaal Nathrakh - The Codex Necro
Bathory - Bathory
Ministry - Land Of Rape And Honey
Godflesh - Streetcleaner
Fantomas - Director's Cut
Khanate - Things Viral
Sleep - Jerusalem
Bolt Thrower - War Master
Mercyful Fayte - Don't Break The Oath

Conan The Asshander (Doran), Thursday, 17 November 2011 00:07 (thirteen years ago)

Although, three of these are just albums that blew me away when I heard them I think.

Conan The Asshander (Doran), Thursday, 17 November 2011 00:07 (thirteen years ago)

Burzum - Burzum

^^ tho its relevance it's undeniable, i think of 'filosofem' as the "gamechanging" burzum album (maybe 'hvis lyset tar oss).

ok possibly both should be listed then, reason i didn't include it was because it came out long after the 1st album and was trying to stick to 1 per artist so others could list albums by that band if they wanted to.

I feel morbid angel should be listed here but which album?
and

Entombed - Left Hand Path

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Thursday, 17 November 2011 17:26 (thirteen years ago)

Bathory - Bathory
Ministry - Land Of Rape And Honey
Sleep - Jerusalem
Mercyful Fayte - Don't Break The Oath

― Conan The Asshander (Doran),

I agree on these ones for sure.

Great Fushigi Master (Viceroy), Thursday, 17 November 2011 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

carcass - reek of putrefaction
at the gates - slaughter of the soul (for refining the gothenburg sound, as bland as the record is)
mayhem - deathcrush

charlie h, Friday, 18 November 2011 01:57 (thirteen years ago)

you could even point to carcass' heartwork as doing massive things for the whole melodic death phenomenon.

charlie h, Friday, 18 November 2011 02:01 (thirteen years ago)

motley crue - too fast for love

charlie h, Friday, 18 November 2011 02:20 (thirteen years ago)

'altars of madness' for morbid angel, surely?

amorphis - 'tales from the thousand lakes'

cb, Friday, 18 November 2011 10:18 (thirteen years ago)

cryptopsy - 'none so vile'

cb, Friday, 18 November 2011 10:20 (thirteen years ago)

gorguts - obscura

charlie h, Friday, 18 November 2011 12:30 (thirteen years ago)

maybe the new morbid angel album will change metal

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Friday, 18 November 2011 13:28 (thirteen years ago)

I feel morbid angel should be listed here but which album?

^^ 'blessed are the sick', maybe? tho this choice is based on the fact that it's my favourite. hence, a biased opinion (dunno the impact 'altars of madness' might've had, tbh. and 'covenant' is still one of the best selling dm albums ever).

rusty_allen, Friday, 18 November 2011 14:30 (thirteen years ago)

Does Dopethrone count? Surely responsible for kicking off/boosting the stoner metal styles..?

Glo-Vember (dog latin), Friday, 18 November 2011 14:41 (thirteen years ago)

I guess Repulsion - Horrified although that was more retrospectively since no-one heard it til 3 years after it came out?

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Friday, 18 November 2011 15:16 (thirteen years ago)

i reckon 'horrified' counts; i get the impression it was really influential in tape-trading circles before it got a 'proper' release.

cb, Friday, 18 November 2011 15:31 (thirteen years ago)

plus, it's awesome!

cb, Friday, 18 November 2011 15:32 (thirteen years ago)

dopethrone boiled down stoner rock to a fine resin, some influential precursors were

monster magnet - spine of god
kyuss - blues for the red sun
melvins - lysol

the boy with the gorn at his side (Edward III), Friday, 18 November 2011 15:35 (thirteen years ago)

I always rep priest's sad wings of destiny as a watershed moment for chug-a-lug metal

the boy with the gorn at his side (Edward III), Friday, 18 November 2011 15:39 (thirteen years ago)

would add to that list of stoner records Boris - Akuma no Uta

good luck in your pyramid (Neil S), Friday, 18 November 2011 16:45 (thirteen years ago)

kyuss - blues for the red sun

im amazed i forgot to include that

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Friday, 18 November 2011 16:51 (thirteen years ago)

Both 'Master Of Puppets' and '...And Justice For All' must have influenced a few prog-metal acts, surely.

Turrican, Friday, 18 November 2011 18:42 (thirteen years ago)

The new Korn, ushering in a new era in pubstep.

Conan The Asshander (Doran), Saturday, 19 November 2011 00:44 (thirteen years ago)

one month passes...

Both 'Master Of Puppets' and '...And Justice For All' must have influenced a few prog-metal acts, surely.

Dream Theater said that they were influenced by them

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Monday, 2 January 2012 03:38 (thirteen years ago)

Great albums all (well, a lot of them) but "game changing" is another level, methinks.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Monday, 2 January 2012 09:35 (thirteen years ago)
