Super Furry Animals - Fuzzy Logic

The first SFA album and some say their greatest. I've always found it a pretty incredible first album, though the last two tracks feel like filler.

Agh so hard! Probably between "Something for the Weekend", "Hometown Unicorn", "If You Don't Want Me to Destroy You" but I don't really know. "Mario Man" is the song that always felt like filler to me, no way that "For Now and Ever" deserves cutting.

"Long Gone" is the one that really feels like filler because of that long conversation between Rhys Ifans & whoever it is on the other end.

Not as overwhelmed by this as by later work, but I love "Hometown Unicorn", which gives a hint of what they'd become later.

"Hometown Unicorn" is the best song. I wish the awesome lil' solo were 15 seconds longer.

The EP version.

They really kicked it into gear on the album.

A couple of those tracks were too short on the album, worked better as singles.

Hongroe (Geir Hongro), Thursday, 17 November 2011 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

Not sure which songs are too short. "God! Show Me Magic" is great at that length.

That one could've nuzzled in well on the tracklist.

Yay! I'm stoked to post in this. Will noodle on a longer post -- but I think I have to go with "If You Don't Want Me to Destroy You."

I went for Gathering Moss. I think it's quite possibly the best indictment of Thatcherism on record.

I Don't Want You To Destroy me - only one version, yup?

'Fuzzy Logic' is a good debut album and everything, and I have a lot of fond memories of playing this album back when it first came out, but I don't think Super Furry Animals fully "came into their own" songwriting-wise or sound-wise until 'Radiator', and we didn't have very long to wait for that one since it was only released the year after! 'If You Don't Want Me To Destroy You' is a personal favourite of mine, because it was the very first Super Furry Animals single that I bought, so naturally I ended up voting for that.

I preferred the single version of 'Something For The Weekend' over the album version. The album version is a little more 'punkier' (for want of a better term), I suppose, but I think the slower pace and better production of the single version brings the melody out a little bit more. I think 'Lazy Life [Of No Fixed Identity]' was one of the tracks recorded during the Fuzzy Logic sessions... let me check...

'Lazy Life [Of No Fixed Identity]', 'Don't Be A Fool, Billy!', 'Death By Melody' were recorded as part of the Fuzzy Logic sessions, but were cut from the album and released as B-sides.

'Dim Bendith', 'Arnofio/Glo In The Dark', '(Nid) Hon Yw'r Gan Sy'n Mynd I Achub Yr Iaith' and 'The Man Don't Give A Fuck' were done at Stiwdio OFN (where the band made most of 'Radiator' and most of 'Mwng') after the album sessions had finished.

'Guacamole' was the very last Fuzzy Logic-era thing to be recorded at Big Noise Recorders at the last minute after legal problems prevented 'The Man Don't Give A Fuck' from being one of the B-sides to 'If You Don't Want Me To Destroy You'.

'Waiting To Happen' - I'm not sure about.

Yeah. As far as I recall, the only two songs they ever re-recorded were 'God! Show Me Magic' and 'Something For The Weekend'. That 'Frisbee' demo was never widely available.

There are other "different" versions of tracks where the singles are a bit different to the album versions, but it's either down to a bit of editing (the intro noises on 'Hermann Loves Pauline' were chopped off for the single) or re-mixing ('Play It Cool' and 'Show Your Hand' are the same recordings for the single and album versions, they've just been mixed differently). In fact, 'Blerwytirhwng?' is a weird one - it has three versions, but they're all the same recording. The original version on the Llanfair PG EP runs at under 5 minutes, but they extended the "lazer battle" ending artificially to give the track an 11 minute run-time when they included it on 'Out Spaced'. When they decided to include it on the 'Songbook' compilation after that, instead of using the Llanfair PG version, they just edited down the 'Out Spaced' version, so it still has a longer "lazer battle" ending, but not as long. The 'Songbook' version also cuts off abruptly, whereas the other two don't.

"Dim Bendith" is honestly one of the best songs I've ever heard by any band ever. Kill me for the hyperbole, but I genuinely believe it. It haunts me to this day. That synth and Gruff's vocals mix perfectly. I still wonder why Cian hasn't mastered electronic music when he's come up with so many unique tunes with his main band.

Gruff's got one of the best falsettos in the biz. Going from that stuffed-nosed guttural voice to the Prince-esque falsetto has to be the Gruff Rhys trademark.

i think ILM (i know i was) a bit burned out of SFA polls. this poll didn't get enough votes.

Bee OK, Monday, 2 January 2012 03:57 (thirteen years ago)

That or, you know, ILM was down for over a month.

I approve of these results.
