MOS DEF: search and destroy

i'm guessing everyone agrees that his output has been spotty, take it from there. to kill the criticism before we start, yes of course you should destroy that part where he quotes the red hot chili peppers. what the hell was he thinking?

(and just so you know, it's eleven fifty-nine pm and i'm cutting it ludicrously close here)

ethan, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jesus. The man has only two albums fr cryin out loud. Search them both. They're gold.

Sterling Clover, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

well actually i meant more in terms of songs (and guest appearances, which he's done way too many of). both albums high and low points and that's what i'm asking about. bring it on.

ethan, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

rather, both albums HAVE high and low points. duh.

ethan, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: find myself kind-of tired of his style now, but Universal Magnetic and the Reflection Eternal single Fortified Live still sound very exciting. Definition is pretty great.

Destroy: that crappy old-skool pastiche B Boys Will B Boys? Feel entirely indifferent towards Black On Both Sides.

joel, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oops. right, carry on.

joel, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

restricting it to Black On Both Sides:

search: "Know That", destroy "Rock'n'Roll".

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Search: apparent willingness to fuck with his audience's expectations (cf. the Rock group and preference for uncool "white" clothes), B-Boy Document, Blackstar stuff. is it just me or does Talib Kweli provide a very effective muse for Mr. Def? All the Blackstar stuff sounds... urgent and fresh.

Destroy: "Elvis Presley ain's got no soul / Chuck Berry invented rock and roll." He's going to be living that down for awhile.

oh, Search: him and Talib bought Nkiru, a bookstore around the corner from me on Flatbush that specializes in black authors, in order to keep it from going under. They're in the neighborhood a suprising amount. At least Talib is.

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 5 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think the much-hated 'rock'n'roll' should have been released as a single indepedent of the album, thus getting the concept out to a wider audience without making me skip over it every time i want to listen to the record (and between two REALLY GOOD tracks too). even before the embarassing fake punk ending, it's too uninspiring to be listenable more than twice on the album, but hearing it all over the radio would be fucking genius.

ethan, Sunday, 6 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought that bookstore finally went out of business. That's what I was told anyway. Search: "Oh No" with Pharoah Monche and Nate Dogg. Destroy: white clothes (only Bea Arthur and Kid Rock have any right to rock white clothes).

Kris, Monday, 7 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

White clothes? Ginuwine, of course. R. Kelly. Jodeci. The whole male R&B randy seducer crowd.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I should've fully attributed and said "uncool, 'white' clothes", then.

Kris, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

he seems to me like he's always wearing different brown leathers and fedoras and stuff. undeniably cool. anyway since when do rappers not wear 'uncool white clothes'? just because timberland and hilfiger are hot (well, post-hot) now doesn't mean they were when they started to become fashionably with the hiphop crowd. anyone seen that clip from around 1995 of method man freestyling with a green & white polo shirt and a BACKPACK on? he looks like he was dressed by anthony michael hall, and yet he pulls it off. nothing new there.

ethan, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not managed to listen to 'Black on Both Sides' since the wretched 'Rock n Roll' and some ludicrous Michael Jackson / Woody Allen / fucking young people comparisions. He's the Manic Street Preachers of hip-hop, though without the ludicrous sexual puritanism. Old-school anbd well intentions, the very easiest ways to create a dull rap record (theough not quite as wretched as Spooks, Black Eyed Peas etc). Though search 'Ms Fat Booty' for some neat un-Masculinism, and 'Fear not of man' for great organ sounds. Destroy 'fear not of man' for suggesting godliness isn't next to sexyness.

matthew james, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay, for "uncool and white", read "not baggy". Can anybody name a male MC, white or black, who wears tight clothes? Besides Kool Keith who Def-initely doesn't count?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 8 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Personally, I love Rock n' Roll. "Kenny G ain't got no soul, John Coltrane is rock & roll"...pure entertainment. Plus, it's catchy as hell, and I have a soft spot for any MC who is willing to start screaming (and reference Nina Simone in the same song).

Jordan Cohen, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i like it too, it just doesn't hold up to the rest of his work will, and is poorly placed on the album. oh, and a lot of the 'black people rock better' theory breaks down once he gets to bad brains and fishbone. taking cheap shots at kenny g is just dumb anyway, i would have preferred more on how black people aren't expected to be 'rock' nowadays, but instead he shamelessly goes for 'GET YO PUNK ASS UP' and pretty much sounds like all the awful rock bands he was just talking about. 'aint about to fuck with limp bizkit'? mos, you just did.

ethan, Wednesday, 9 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I guess I just saw it as trying to point out where white people got the commercial success through playing black music, as opposed to a 'black artists are better' thing. I think his examples hold up a lot better in that light.

is there a thread on the ecstatic yet? i'm loving it.

the style and grace of a greased rhinoceros in a bed bath & beyond (stevie), Tuesday, 16 June 2009 09:52 (fifteen years ago)

search:

his cameo in talledega nights
him rapping in the passwnger seat with dave driving him around on the chappelle show
be kind rewind

also, i'm listening to the ecstatic as i type this, and yes it's great

messiahwannabe, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 12:02 (fifteen years ago)

I've only listened to it once, but I have a hard time calling it any kind of "great" just yet. An improvement on the last two, sure. But I still feel like there is just way too much filler and tracks that seem really padded out to me. Like 30 seconds of actual rapping and just crap stretched out to hit the 3-4 minute run time. No, I wasn't demanding another Black On Both Sides, but I wanted something a little more consistent. Having said that, there is a lot of great stuff on here... especially the first third and the track with Kweli.

the sideburns are album-specific (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 16 June 2009 12:24 (fifteen years ago)

theres no filler on it per se, i just dont get why mos kinda finishes a song then feels the need to sing randomly at the end of each song when it isnt needed.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 16 June 2009 14:23 (fifteen years ago)

Can't wait to hear The Ecstatic, will be picking it up shortly.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Tuesday, 16 June 2009 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

Search: Any of his appearances on Broadway. Great actor.

Destory: His recent appearance on Real Time with Bill Mahar.

thirdalternative, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

I love that Bill Maher appearance!

makeitpop, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

slick rick in 2009 is weeeeird dudes. haven't listened to the whole album yet but i am not convinced that it is great yet.

samosa gibreel, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

Love Mos Def when he sticks to rapping for the entire duration of the song. Not as enthused when he gets ADD and starts free-associating/mumbling midway through until the song falls apart.

makeitpop, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 21:52 (fifteen years ago)

OTM

Just listened to this again and I like it a little more, but too much of that rambling kills some of these songs.

the sideburns are album-specific (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 16 June 2009 22:01 (fifteen years ago)

did they ever get round to making that second Black Star album?

zappi, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 22:39 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, this is a bit frustrating. I would've liked a total return to form thing, but it's sketches...suits Doom a lot of the time, but Mos Def sounds distracted, his flow isn't what is was, and some of the beats are pretty meh. The first 1/3 is good, but...it turns into a grouping of disparate demos.

paulhw, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 22:53 (fifteen years ago)

Wish it all were as good as that Slick Rick cameo:

quiet dog too. maybe the best song on the new album. can never remember any of this album after its ended.

top ten.

vulva eyes (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 17:19 (fifteen years ago)

it's good, not sure if it's great. my mind wanders after a while. a couple more real standout tracks would put it over the top for me. as it there's lots of stuff i like but not enough that makes me hit rewind.

flying squid attack (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 17:25 (fifteen years ago)

It's good enough, and I'm one who thinks Black on Both Sides isn't a masterpiece. His short attention span finally gets the right outlet.

vulva eyes (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, it's terrific. thing is, it just seems like more of the same, just better, ya know. i mean, raving about this would be somewhat akin to '70s dudes heaping yet more adulation upon the latest Creedence album back in 1970 (round about Pendulum's release, say)--Xgau's famous "Ho hum, another Creedence album." comes to mind.

all you need is love vs. money (that's what i want) (Ioannis), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

consistency/more of the same is underrated.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 15 September 2009 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

i think its pretty different from black on..., and certainly from the new danger - less hook-orientated and more subterranean than the first, less willfully anti-pop and obtuse than the second. still not sure if its enough to get his "career" back on the rails again, after new danger's disappointing sales, and whatever the fuck happened with true magic.

its just ok for me. its not... i dunno, dubby enough? for the most part the vocals are so upfront and intact. to me its more like a reggae/mos mashup.

Enter nothing in the dialog and click 'OK' (Hunt3r), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 03:41 (fourteen years ago)

that looks really stupid, cuz it is a reggae/mos mashup.

a coworker i recommended it to said he liked it, but it was too hardcore for his tiki bar.
