make me a c90: nu-metal

(we might have done this before.) with the release of the linkin park remix cd (the future of music, dontcha know), nu-metal's basic stock seems to be somewhat up about these parts. so tell me what goes on the "definitive" c90. i would think nu-metal is broad enough to include andrew wk/system of a down/hoobastank/delete-add as necessary.

starting, i would guess, roughly with the release of the first korn album (95/96?), which nicely halves the alt-rock 90s and predicts our present radiorock climate.

I could tape you one KoRn song and two Syndrom Of A Down albums. I don't like or collect mallcore.

Lek Dukagjin, Thursday, 12 September 2002 17:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Movies - Alien Ant Farm
In the End - Linkin' Park
Bring the Noise - Anthrax/Public Enemy

Why, because it DOES successfully marry Rap & Metal? What a strange idea of Nu-Metal you have.

Lek Dukagjin, Thursday, 12 September 2002 18:08 (twenty-three years ago)

no because, if you want a good example of this fusion element from before the term "nu-metal" was coined then Anthrax/PE is the best I can think of.

"The Fake Sound of Progress" Lostprophets, the UK's only successful attempt at nu-metal.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 12 September 2002 18:20 (twenty-three years ago)

lek, i think yr kinda of missing the point.

you don't actually have to tape anything.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 12 September 2002 19:05 (twenty-three years ago)

That song that goes "Cut my life/into pieces/I am your last regret/Suffocation/No Limits/Don't give a shit about me!" - that rocks! That first Puddle of Mudd one. And "How You Remind Me".

david h (david h), Thursday, 12 September 2002 19:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Ha, I just realised, jess harvell = otm, nu-metal rocks. I hate him more now.

david h (david h), Thursday, 12 September 2002 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

What the hell is "mallcore"? Metal that gets played in shopping malls? Is there a genre called "smallcore"?

Enid Roach (Enid Roach), Thursday, 12 September 2002 19:09 (twenty-three years ago)

The Deftones are pretty much the only nu-metal act I find even vaguely interesting, in large part because I can't understand why nu-metallers would like something so (occasionally) pretty and unjocky. You'd probably want "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" or "Change (In the House of Flies)" or both.

Lee G (Lee G), Thursday, 12 September 2002 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

jess, are you downloading these? can you make me a copy? i don't have a cd burner, and i'd like them in one place... possible? I can do swapsies.

david h (david h), Thursday, 12 September 2002 19:10 (twenty-three years ago)

But, don't you see "I am your last regret" pretty much = Richard Yates' "Revolutionary Road", all in one sentence, I am the nail in your mortgaged spirituality, past me there is nothing, was nothing, shall be nothing = it is a fucking great lyric.

Papa Roach - "Papercut"

david h (david h), Thursday, 12 September 2002 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Ummm...isn't it "this is my last resort"? Given that the song is called "Last Resort," I think, it seems more likely. Also, the line is "suffocation/no breathing," which totally cracks me up.

Best Nu-metal: System of a Down obv. But Slipknot's "Left Behind" oughta go on the tape, as should something or other off of the most recent Skinlab album, "The Revolting Room." And Pissing Razors' "Ruin," which straddles the Lousisiana sludge-metal line but has one of the all-time great choruses ("Ruin/ruin/ruin/yeah").

My own last resore, incidentally, was Laughlin Nevada - luvly

John Darn1elle, Thursday, 12 September 2002 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

David I think it's: Papa Roach - Last Resort...

Cut my life into pieces
I've reached my last resort, suffocation, no breathing
Don't give a fuck if I cut my arm bleeding
Would it be wrong, would it be right
If I took my life tonight, chances are that I might
Mutilation out of sight and I'm contemplating suicide
Cause I'm losin' my sight, losin' my mind
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine
Nothing's alright, nothing's fine
I'm running and I'm crying
I never realized I was spread too thin
'Til it was too late and I was empty within
and etc.

Papercut is Linkin' Park:

Why does it feel like night today?
Something in here's not right today.
Why am I so uptight today?
Paranoia's all I got left
I don't know what stressed me first
Or how the pressure was fed
But I know just what it feels like
To have a voice in the back of my head
It's like a face that I hold inside
A face that awakes when I close my eyes
A face watches every time I lie
A face that laughs every time I fall
(And watches everything)
So I know that when it's time to sink or swim
That the face inside is hearing me
Right underneath my skin

It's like I'm paranoid lookin' over my back
It's like a whirlwind inside of my head
It's like I can't stop what I'm hearing within
It's like the face inside is right beneath my skin

and etc.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 12 September 2002 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

resore=resort, dammit

John Darn1elle, Thursday, 12 September 2002 19:36 (twenty-three years ago)

oh, alright, songmeld... but the pt that it's a great song/lyric, still holds.

david h (david h), Thursday, 12 September 2002 20:02 (twenty-three years ago)

She Loves Me Not is so so much better than Last Resort. Actually the only decent Papa Roach song

vic (vicc13), Friday, 13 September 2002 00:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Vic is sooooooo wrong re: Papa Roach. "She Loves Me Not" is almost reasonable, which really doesn't work. Irrational adolescent rabble-rousing is so much better.

More tracks / suggestions:

Deftones - "Back to School"
Cave-In - "Jupiter"
the first track from Isis' _Celestial_
something from Neurosis' _Enemy of the Sun_
Korn - "Falling Away From Me"
just about any song on Linkin Park's _Hybrid Theory_
Staind - "Fade"
Limp Bizkit - "Break Stuff"
Quarashi - "Stick 'Em Up"

I would think raiding the roster of Hydrahead and Relapse would help beef this puppy up (I'm guessing Jess knows / couldn't care less). And please note that I'd blur the lines enough to include stuff like Lightning Bolt and ...Trail of Dead.

Relapse??? Have they stooped down to signing nu-metal bands? What is this world coming too...we're talking about the label that released the first albums of Suffocation, Amorphis, Dead Horse, Deceased...

Although their roster isn't *that* good anymore, at least they had the wits to sign Nile. But I never imagined they'd sink this low...
