FilePile - What Gives?

What is FilePile? Some way around P2P networking? Do I really have to buy something from Amazon and send it to this guy to get an account? Is it worth it?

...or is this just a secret ILM thing (hush-hush)?

you'll get in trouble for talking about it.

the first rule of fight club ... oh I mean..well whatever..

and you wouldn't want to mention that other place swap something or other..

It's a fucking scam: once I found out about it, I went there and discovered that they were only accepting more members if you, cough cough, bought the guy something off his expensive-ass Amazon.com wish list. fuck that noise. BOYCOTT!

Is that what they're doing now? Ha ha ha, oh well.

It's a private filesharing community, basically. I think the stuff on the front page is public. I don't know when they closed the membership. There are about 5 or 6 regular posters of excellent music but if you've got a filesharing program anyway you're not missing out on much. THe most fun thing about it is the change for people to vote on your tastes :)

Is it worth buying stuff to join? No. Fun to browse occasionally just to see what turns up but certainly not unmissable. There used to be a few people on there who'd upload their own newly-made bootlegs and such, and that was cool, though again they also spread them around on other filesharers too. But it's not a scam, it's just the owner had bandwidth quota problems and had to stop accepting new members, I think.

I feel bad because I have an account and I don't look at it very often and I upload even less frequently. That might change now because the work firewall seems to be letting me upload now for some reason and it never used to, but then again if I start transferring too much stuff either way every day they'll probably notice and block it completely.

(Hey, dsico, are you the person who did the Pavement vs Destiny's Child bootleg? That got stuck in my head for weeks at a time earlier this summer. Cool. But I should stop asking questions like this on ILX because nobody ever answers and I guess they are really stalkerish and everyone probably just thinks, "oh god, psycho nutcase, keep quiet and hope she goes away...")

Rebecca (reb), Friday, 13 September 2002 22:06 (twenty-three years ago)

for what it's worth, Rebecca, I don't think that, and I'm sure lots of others don't, either. but for questions like that, I tend to just send email. that said, I'm curious, too.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 13 September 2002 22:10 (twenty-three years ago)

(dsico's destiny's child, chemical brothers bootleg was the greatest thing i'd ever heard. it was heartbreakingly good. it was like, wow. now that i'm imagining it in my head it doesn't sound that good and it might not sound that good just from the description. but it's so good. the best bootleg i've ever heard. it's great. maybe that wasn't all necessary but i really, really like it. okay. now i need to figure out how to make my text small. i hope this works.)

Yes, there are a number of people on FilePile who upload good mp3s to the music pile on a regular basis. The voting and discussion aspect is really what makes the site so addicting, though. And as Rebecca pointed out, not a scam due to the bandwidth issue. Used to be open to all until the site basically stopped functioning due to too much traffic.

Jen, Saturday, 14 September 2002 03:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Total scam. Stay away from it.

Seriously, the site is closed, we're haven't been accepting new members freely for about a year now. On a lark I figured that if someone wanted to be on it bad enough, they can buy me something terribly expensive. I get people emailing me and pleading so much that I figure I should get compensated for running the damn thing for free for almost 3 years.

Anyway, I'll give out 1 free account to the first 5 who email me.

Andre Torrez, Sunday, 15 September 2002 06:25 (twenty-three years ago)

Don't give me a free account cos i've got one but thanks for the hard work Andre.

Tom (Groke), Sunday, 15 September 2002 09:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahaha.
The other place is not the mentioned in case it gets killed again.

Auslander, Tuesday, 17 September 2002 12:37 (twenty-three years ago)

It always crashes when I use it

hi andre!

filepile is a lot of fun, and it's a shame that the ever-encroaching bandwidth cost issues made it go semi-private. (remember adcritic?) i don't think it's fair to fling around allegations of 'scam' -- talk to any person dealing with media-heavy sites and you'll see that they're getting utterly slammed on the cost end of things. (last year, i put up an album's worth of mp3s on my site for about two weeks, and was shocked to see that i'd been socked with a $450 bill for that month.)

hell, even 'free' sites have bandwidth limitations now, one that pretty much ended the possibility of phenomena like mahir, etc coming from a non-pay service. total bummer.

maura (maura), Wednesday, 18 September 2002 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

buy andre a present - he deserves it. filepile rocks the parti and gets 100% credit for totally getting ripped off by inspiring the other place.
