In an attempt to turn a random endorsement into a thread:

Can learning of an artist's own taste in music have a measurable impact on your appreciation for them? I have little time for the Hives and like almost every track they've picked here better than their records, but it is nice to know that they're on the right track.

On the other hand, I was once very disappointed to read that Kool Keith fancies Master P.

God yeah - I must admit I gave Soulwax's album a comprehensive reappraisal after the first time I saw them DJ. I find comps like the one above and the 2manydjs one really useful from a context point of view - they often make the band in question's own music make much more sense. And they always contain something you'd never have thought of, which is lovely...

The Dirtbombs, the BellRays and Radio Motherfucking Birdman? Oh yeah, I KNEW there was a reason I liked these guys.

hee hee, like he fancies him or he just, you know, fancies him, hee hee?

Taking Sides: Kool Keith vs. Master P

I'd much rather listen to a radio station programmed by the Hives than listen to the Hives.

Exactly! It betrays much more about a band, when they pick the songs they'd like to be represented by, than when they play their own stuff. And if they choose to be represented by their own stuff, then...the world implodes in a Moebius loop of fire...

I'm kind of disappointed in the Hives for not just picking all their own stuff - it would be much more in keeping with the we-are-law-you-are-crime bombast which is the best thing about them. Whereas now we know that the Hives have solid taste in punky leftfield rock, wow.

They played a version of 'Stop and Think It Over' at Reading, and it was splendid.
