I was wondering, can you even GET 2 Live Crew anymore? It seems that they are right up there with The Fat Boys as far as who-gives-a-crap. But, was 2 Live Crew the essence of "what it's all about" as far as main stream "hard core rap" (not a term I invented-- actually, a term I barely understand)?
The reason I ask, is this: In a recent interview Dr. Dre and his wife speak about how he had an image to uphold as far as hard core rap goes. When he stopped using terms like "bitch" and "ho" his sales plummeted with his credibility. His wife gave him the "okay" (actually, she was the one that suggested and encouraged him) to go "back to his roots". Now that he has, he's back on top, producing Eminem and doing guest spots, etc. but he and his wife agree it is just an image to uphold. He would never cheat on his wife or call her a "bitch".
So is this sort of credibility actually credible at all? Eminem's song ("I am whatever you say I am") is along these same lines.
Last I knew 2 Live Crew was sort of thought of as a bad joke... no? What do you think of 2 Live Crew?
Personally, I found it quite amusing in 8th grade.
So classic or dud? No arguments shall follow, as I refuse to comment.

MY SEVEN BIZZOS
I luv "Nasty"
Maybe it says more about how unsophisticated I am than anything else, but I think the samples on that record are so cool & great

I was listening to this the other day and thinking about the "controversy" it engendered and how weird it is that anyone ever seriously took this as some kind of dangerously sexist/mysognistic work. Its just so incredibly goofy, the humor is beyond silly - half the time the swearing and innuendos don't even make sense, you can tell they're just trying to cram as many dirty words into the rhyme as possible... that it was ever taken out of the context of Dolemite/Blowfly/Redd Foxxx/Richard Pryor comedy records is kind of unbelievable.
And the beats ARE pretty great across the board.

I wonder what Kubrick and the "me so horny" actress thought about how that line was turned into like the most notorious spoken hook in a dance song eveh. Notwithstanding I guess whether or not they got paid for it (and I'm sure they didn't?)-- they must have sort of loved it, right?? I mean, even after all this time and 1000000x "impressions," it's pretty freakin' genius!!

I've been listening to "Get the Fuck Out of My House" lately. Hilarious, especially when you keep in mind all the hip-house stuff of the period.

As for Morris' question, I've read a Kubrick interview where he referred to "Surfin' Bird" as "remarkable" or something -- it was in his Vietnam movie, I guess -- so I'd hope he'd feel the same about the Crew.

Fuck the "great because it's fun" vs. "great for freedom" vs. "garbage because of shock value". This 1986 jam for all time

Both rappers of the 2 Live Crew now dead. :-(
History has treated them oddly (perhaps for good reason) but if you had ears in 1986-88 that initial wave was enormous. There was literally absolutely nothing like it.
