Doom metal is an extreme form of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much "thicker" or "heavier" sound than other metal genres. Both the music and the lyrics intend to evoke a sense of despair, dread, and impending doom.[1] The genre is strongly influenced by the early work of Black Sabbath,[1] who formed a prototype for doom metal with songs such as "Black Sabbath", "Electric Funeral" and "Into the Void".
Their third album, Master of Reality (released in 1971), features Tony Iommi’s guitar and Geezer Butler’s bass tuned down to C# for heavier riffing and reduced string tension for Iommi’s previously injured fingers.
During the first half of the 1980s,[1] a number of bands from England (Pagan Altar, Witchfinder General), the United States (Pentagram, Saint Vitus, Trouble) and Sweden (Candlemass, Count Raven) defined doom metal as a distinct genre.

Ya this can be confusing! For the purposes of my genre lists, I put certain bands with doomy elements into my stoner rock list, like Elder (stoner doom with also some psych) and Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats (psych doom with also strong garage/retro rock elements). Maybe you should list some other examples, particularly for death, blackened and gothic?

Hmm this is kinda hard. I like most of them.
Are these really subgenres or descriptors? I don't really think of them as subgenres so much as unclear roadmaps for what to expect.

not really, I sometimes scan the results and pick out a few bands to listen to (or put together spotify playlists with a view to going back to them) but rarely devote enough time to it to really get a handle on what exactly separates seven different sub-genres of a sub-genre. I do listen to the occasional bit of metal and/or noise, but not often.

My oldest lad has discovered deathcore so I'm listening to a bit more than I'd choose tbh :)
