all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 13:57 (thirteen years ago)

which is WORST might be more competitive

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 13:57 (thirteen years ago)

although that's probably a straight-up mars vs murs battle

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 13:58 (thirteen years ago)

wait surely that isnt dj fresh from oakland that deej loves?

I am Newgod (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:09 (thirteen years ago)

i have knowingly heard 4 of these, none of my own volition.

they all sucked. bruno mars is the worst of the 4 tho.

I am Newgod (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:10 (thirteen years ago)

what it does it mean that i recognize almost all of the first half as US hits but almost none of the second half

some dude, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

most of the 2nd half are X Factor related - previous contestants, winners etc.

danzig, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:16 (thirteen years ago)

...and would have coincided with the last series so...

hickory always flavours the wieners (NickB), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:17 (thirteen years ago)

am I the only ILXor who will still admit to liking "Grenade"?

Much Ado About Nuttin (DJP), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:19 (thirteen years ago)

Maybe heard 2 of these.

Glo-Vember (dog latin), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:21 (thirteen years ago)

weird -- we haven't had a reality/singing competition show-launched no. 1 in years over here (not counting "moves like jagger") xpost

some dude, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:22 (thirteen years ago)

I am betting homegirl from X-Factor US will break that trend

Much Ado About Nuttin (DJP), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:23 (thirteen years ago)

5 best:
Nero - Promises
Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris - We Found Love
Adele - Someone Like You
One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful
Ke$ha - We R Who We R

5 worst:
Sak Noel - Loca People
PARTY ROCK ANTHEM
Bruno Mars - The Lazy Song
Jessie J ft. B.o.B - Price Tag
Wretch 32 ft. Josh Kumra - Don't Go. (Especially disappointing after promise of Traktor)

Have not knowingly heard Military Wives but anything that adult Harry Potter lookalike is involved in I steer clear of.

danzig, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:25 (thirteen years ago)

i will take that bet, djp

some dude, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

all right, now we just have to wait a year for her album to come out

Much Ado About Nuttin (DJP), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:29 (thirteen years ago)

weird -- we haven't had a reality/singing competition show-launched no. 1 in years over here (not counting "moves like jagger") xpost

while XF is running pretty much every no 1 will be XF-related: either a former contestant, the charity single by the finalists or someone who performed on the show that week (eg rihanna). or some combination of the above. or someone who's connected to the judges (eg dappy).

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:39 (thirteen years ago)

top 5

Jennifer Lopez ft. Pitbull - On The Floor
Nicole Scherzinger - Don't Hold Your Breath
Pitbull ft. Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer - Give Me Everything
Cher Lloyd - Swagger Jagger
One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful

(i don't even like the last two ffs)

bottom 5

Olly Murs - Dance With Me Tonight
Olly Murs ft. Rizzle Kicks - Heart Skips A Beat
Jessie J ft. B.o.B - Price Tag
LMFAO ft. Lauren Bennett & GoonRock - Party Rock Anthem
Bruno Mars - The Lazy Song

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:42 (thirteen years ago)

'what's my name' is the only one i've heard, so that. The benefits/downside of being a shut-in except for going to work.

pandemic, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:42 (thirteen years ago)

Struggling to think of a worse collection of #1s for any year ever. The Nero one might actually be the best and it isn't even very good.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:52 (thirteen years ago)

Actually good:

Pitbull ft. Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer - Give Me Everything (voted)
Ke$ha - We R Who We R
DJ Fresh ft. Sian Evans - Louder
Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris - We Found Love
W4nd 3r3ction - What Makes You Beautiful

Quite like:

Dappy - No Regrets
Pixie Lott - All About Tonight
Bruno Mars - Grenade
Bruno Mars - The Lazy Song
Adele - Someone Like You

Worst:

Sak Noel - Loca People (don't get why anyone bought this - is there a sweary version or something? I've only ever heard it on the radio obv)
Rihanna ft. Drake - What's My Name? (It's Rihanna, love)
Jessie J ft. B.o.B - Price Tag
Little Mix - Cannonball (they should have covered The Breeders song instead)
X Factor Finalists et al - Wishing On A Star (die)

Jeff W, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

That is an astoundingly bad list. Not having heard the bottom half stuff though, which is worse Britishers? The shit we shove down your throats of the homegrown crap?

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

Lot of fourth-rate Brit rappers in there as well.

If ever there was a time when shit isn't being shoved down ppls throats, its now. I bet the majority of people in this country have no idea what 75% of this list sounds like.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:18 (thirteen years ago)

Glad that someone else finds that Pixie Lott song to be yuck. Can't quite figure out what is so irritating about it, but it really gets on my tits. Could just be the uselessness of the title phrase as a refrain, but also the tune kind of sounds like a euro-trancey version of 'Tik Tok'.

This. Was just listening to Sound Opinions and fuckin' DeRo kicked off his end of year mixtape with it. But, thats sorta lol and otm in a way.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:33 (thirteen years ago)

i've tried really, really hard to pay attention to any olly murs song for more than 10 seconds and found it impossible, it just slides off the brain

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 15:54 (thirteen years ago)

lmao i came into this thread thinking surely it must be better than the 2011 usa #1s list. i was sorely mistaken.

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

i am voting for "promises" even though it's a song i am not very enthusiastic about

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

lol how did the UK get "jar of hearts" even worse than we did

some dude, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

i'm almost surprised "the lazy song" isn't MORE critically acclaimed since it's cut from the same cloth w/ the same author as the cee-lo song that topped all the critics' polls last year

some dude, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 18:40 (thirteen years ago)

i wonder often how "fuck you" would have been received if bruno mars had released it himself

teledyldonix, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 18:45 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think those two are cut from the same cloth at all. "Lazy Song" is on some sub-Jack Johnson "lets chill with our acoustic guitar" shit, while "Fuck You" at least aimed for some type of classic pop Motwon rip-off vibe.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 18:51 (thirteen years ago)

i just mean they're both peppy genre pastiches with 'naughty' dad joke senses of humor

some dude, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 18:54 (thirteen years ago)

"The Lazy Song" is "Longview" done through a Kid Disney filter

Much Ado About Nuttin (DJP), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 19:06 (thirteen years ago)

lol military wives sounds like a noise band, why does the uk have so many more #1 hits than the us

lag∞n, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 19:11 (thirteen years ago)

I think it's a combination of:

1) a different ranking methodology
2) a smaller population leading to a more volatile chart

Much Ado About Nuttin (DJP), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 19:12 (thirteen years ago)

airplay doesn't count so it's all about short-term sales boosts (which is why XF can play such a big role)

It got covered on Glee, and then on X Factor, and then performed on Strictly Come Dancing. Thank god for shit TV.

wtf is jar of hearts

The Reverend, Tuesday, 3 January 2012 21:22 (thirteen years ago)

more like jar o'farts amirite

hickory always flavours the wieners (NickB), Tuesday, 3 January 2012 23:12 (thirteen years ago)

Actually good:

Rihanna ft. Drake - What's My Name?
Adele - Someone Like You

Tolerable:

Example - Changed The Way You Kiss Me
Cher Lloyd - Swagger Jagger
Nero - Promises
Wretch 32 ft. Josh Kumra - Don't Go
Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris - We Found Love
Professor Green ft. Emeli Sandé - Read All About It

Absolute worst:

Jessie J ft. B.o.B - Price Tag

Significantly worse than 2010.

Science, you guys. Science. (DL), Wednesday, 4 January 2012 12:19 (thirteen years ago)

Like:
Rihanna ft. Drake - What's My Name?
Bruno Mars - Grenade
Ke$ha - We R Who We R
Nicole Scherzinger - Don't Hold Your Breath
Jennifer Lopez ft. Pitbull - On The Floor
LMFAO ft. Lauren Bennett & GoonRock - Party Rock Anthem

Olly Murs ft. Rizzle Kicks - Heart Skips A Beat
Example - Stay Awake
Dappy - No Regrets
Sak Noel - Loca People
Rihanna ft. Calvin Harris - We Found Love
Professor Green ft. Emeli Sandé - Read All About It
Olly Murs - Dance With Me Tonight

Don't mind (the video is better than the song):
Dappy - No Regrets

Shoulder-shrug:
Jason DeRülo - Don't Wanna Go Home
DJ Fresh ft. Sian Evans - Louder
Military Wives & Gareth Malone - Wherever You Are

Great verse, rubbish chorus:
Cher Lloyd - Swagger Jagger

Cannot abide:
Jessie J ft. B.o.B - Price Tag
Adele - Someone Like You
The Wanted - Glad You Came
JLS ft. Dev - She Makes Me Wanna
Pixie Lott - All About Tonight
One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful
X Factor Finalists ft. JLS & One Direction - Wishing On A Star
Little Mix - Cannonball

An average year.

(delete "No Regrets" from the "Like" category obv)

Here he is with the classic "Poème Électronique." Good track (Marcello Carlin), Thursday, 5 January 2012 08:39 (thirteen years ago)

"Changed The Way You Kiss Me" is probably top 5 of the year for me and I'm not afraid to admit it. Also really like "Don't Go". "We Found Love" will probably win, which is probably fair enough as it's the best thing C.Harris has been involved with (except Roisin Murphy slash Sophie Ellis-Bextor's "Off & On").

I'd hate to see airplay taken into account. At least the current system allows the shit songs to disappear quickly from the charts. I'd hate to see the charts filled with the same old songs that record companies have bunged radio to play.

Jimmy Riddle Orchestra (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Friday, 6 January 2012 12:35 (thirteen years ago)

oh sh!t this is the first time I've ever looked at a #1s list and thought "oh, it's all that silly stuff my daughters like" . lol old etc.

thomasintrouble, Friday, 6 January 2012 12:53 (thirteen years ago)

I was also worried that there wasn't a single song in there that I loved, but I realised that I missed Louder, which is great.
