The Outfield: Classic or Dud?

It was popular when I was in high school. Does not hold up for me.

Dud, Dud, Dud, a thousand times Dud.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 13 September 2002 02:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Dud then. Dud now.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 13 September 2002 11:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave and I agree on something! (Not as amazing as one might think, especially in this case.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 13 September 2002 11:54 (twenty-three years ago)

"Your Love" contains some of the worst lyrics ever written:

Josie's on a vacation far away
Come around and talk it over
So many things that I wanna say
You know I like my girls a little bit older
I just wanna use you love tonight
I don't wanna lose your love tonight

I ain't got many friends to talk to
Nowhere to run when I'm in trouble
You know I'd do anything for you
Stay the night but keep it undercover
I just wanna use you love tonight
I don't wanna lose your love tonight

Try to stop my hands from shaking,
But something in my mind's not making sense
It's been a while since we were all alone,
But I can't hide the way I'm feeling

As you're leaving please would you close the door,
And don't forget what I told ya
Just because you're right that don't make me wrong
Another shoulder to cry upon
I just wanna use you love tonight
I don't wanna lose your love tonight
Use your love
Lose your love
Your love

I cant even remember what they sound like. Tough I have a feeling I don't want to remeber...

Yeah any combination of music and sports is never good. Examples, Hammer's 2legit2quit (ironically released right before he disappeared and went bankrupt), Shaq, Allen Iverson, Master P and his minions, John Fogerty solo material, Dire Straits' Walk of Life, 99 percent of all music played at sporting events.

Exceptions; Rock and Roll part 2, the Chicago Bulls intro music, You'll Never Walk Alone,.

Dave Beckhouse, Friday, 13 September 2002 22:24 (twenty-three years ago)

"You'll Never Walk Alone" is the only good sport song ever.

Reds fan., Sunday, 15 September 2002 05:42 (twenty-three years ago)

"Yeah any combination of music and sports is never good"

Which is one reason the All Sports Band never did much in the 1980s. I saw them once on TV and they were the jock Village People - one was a "boxer," one was a "karate expert," all teamed up for the worst game ever - the one involving the writing and performing of Loverboy/Journey AOR crud.

mike a, Sunday, 15 September 2002 13:40 (twenty-three years ago)

This is wrong, people. ESPN Presents Slam Jams Volume 1 is, ounce for ounce, the greatest album evah! Though I don't think "Public Image" was actually ever played in a stadium anywhere.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 15 September 2002 14:08 (twenty-three years ago)

Music in pro-wrestling = classic.
Music in pro-wrestling played outside of a pro-wrestling environment = dud.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 15 September 2002 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

THE OUTFIELD: A bunch of Brits apparently obsessed with a quintessentially American sport, to the point of entitling each of their albums with some sort of baseball reference (from a quick glance at AMG since I have no Outfield records).

I wonder what demented British A&R hack thought up this schtick? Shame the music isn't as interesting as the conceit. And "Your Love" was inescapable if you went to an American high school during the mid-Eighties.

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 16 September 2002 06:38 (twenty-three years ago)

The Outfield were British? This entirely explains why I liked a few of their singles. Then again, the Hooters weren't British, and I liked them in roughly the same way.

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 17 September 2002 21:33 (twenty-three years ago)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 06:03 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, you guys are harsh... if ILM can find redeeming qualities in Huey Lewis, surely there must be some love for the Outfield. I think Play Deep has some classic tracks- "Say It Isn't So", "All the Love", "I Don't Need Her". It's actually pretty consistent all the way through. Watered-down Police/ Cars ripoffs? Sure. But I've probably defended worse.

Will (will), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Total CLASSIC. Play Deep AND Bangin were totally underrated. Listen to them again. Seriously. I think they could've been comprable to Men at Work. The lead singer had that same high pitch and range. Add a horn section, and they're Men at Work (whose songs still totally hold up).

Helen, Thursday, 4 March 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i still like to give "voices of babylon" a spin, but wow... "your love" is dire.

Eisbaer, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

I still have a soft spot for Play Deep. I think it was my first cassette. That OR Billy Joel's Gr. Hits I&II. And that might have been my first ILM post. memories.

Oh my god I am dying over this song. I've played it about 50 times today.

Goddamn Outfield I say! I have three more songs besides this one from their first album and I love them all. Oh my god. I can't stop with this song. Play that damn thing again. Bad 80's hair be damned!

Bimble, Sunday, 24 February 2008 08:20 (seventeen years ago)

I'll still vouch for Play Deep in its entirity, and then a few songs on each of the following two records. I never heard anything after that, though.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 February 2008 08:31 (seventeen years ago)

I have absolutely positively lost my mind over this band.

I know they're cheesy damnit.

I used to have the CD of their first album. I taped 4 songs from it. They were:

Your Love
All The Love
Taking My Chances
I Don't Need Her (last but not least!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CgfSzuFD8rw

But in all honesty this is the one that is really
killing me now:

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 09:55 (seventeen years ago)

Very enjoyable Brit version of overproduced 80's power pop. Came across the "Your Love" single this weekend and the A side is peerless cheese radio fodder - the flip "61 Seconds" is superb as well. Looking through the stacks I have a few of the prime lps and will spin them unapologetically.

zaxxon25, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 12:59 (seventeen years ago)

I always thought the singer sounded a lot like Jules Shear, from Jules and the Polar Bears. (Otherwise, I associated them with the Hooters, for probably no sensible reason.)

xhuxk, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 13:28 (seventeen years ago)

Sincerely the worst fucking band ever. I'd rather listen to a thousand hours of Beyonce duetting with Scout Niblett than ever subject my screaming ears to the fucking Outfield. They're barely human.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

Years later, the Manchester trio reformed under the name The Baseball Boys and were signed to Columbia/CBS Records in 1984, eventually changing their name to The Outfield.

how does one use another person's love? from the dramatic context I gather it's a very emotional activity

kinda power pop but not really the best example of the genre? mainstream pop rock that has power-pop affectations? same with the cars, and they constructed the best hyphenated songs ever. doesn't matter, this is primo radio-driving music. if hey jealousy comes on, i'm speeding up. likewise, if say it isn't so comes on i'm speeding up. like david byrne says, it's scientific. it's disposable pop, so you don't have to have a personal connection to it in any way that matters to you vis-a-vis artistic merit or even talk about them to anybody but that's the appeal. you don't ever regard them at all until you're driving through the countryside because you took the long way home after work because inventory is all fucked up and you're supposed to take care of that but you still have all the other shit you have to get done on a daily basis and the plant manager doesn't understand all that stuff takes time and say it isn't so comes on if you're lucky and you feel the harmonies and open air and bucolic ohio farmland and all of a sudden there's a lot of pretty girls walking by and you're walking in the midnight sun again. maybe that's just specific to me, but you get the idea.

as the kids say, this is a bop. they're all the same song, but they're all bops.

if the perfect is the enemy of the good, then the good is the enemy of the perfect. the outfield might not be good, but the songs are perfect.

slugbuggy, Saturday, 13 September 2025 11:30 (four months ago)

also feel the same about jami jamison-era of survivor but that'd a whole different kettle of whatnot. not good but perfect.
