Steve Gregory (owner of the legendary Fierce Recordings label) always wanted to be a popstar but didn't have the required looks, so he made up a band and got local teen heartthrob "Huw Poostick" to front them.. The whole thing started as a joke with Steve doing all the music and Huw and Trudi Tangerine (acutally Amelia Fletcher from Talulah Gosh/Heavenly) on vocals, but as time went by, they started playing proper gigs and eventually signed a major label deal...
I think Steve now lives in the Netherlands somewhere...
My faves are the Formula 1 generation (notable for a bastardised version of GG Allin's "NYC Tonite" and Great White Wonder LP's

Undeniable Classic!
Show at PopFest in NYC last week was SO killer. Old bands returning usually don't turn me on so much, but Huw and the new-poohs were god-like.

Long story... I was at my wife's friend's wedding do last summer and a friend's partner and I were talking about music and he was saying "Oh, the bands I like nobody has heard of" so I said "Yeah, try me..." and he said "The Pooh Sticks" and I said "Yeah, I know them" and he was like "You're the first person I've met who has heard of them" and my wife said "Well that's cos you're both as sad as each other" so we had a long chat that evening about the band and others we liked.
A few days later I noticed a gig ad in my local record shop for the Pooh Sticks playing in Cardiff (I'm in Newport, ten miles from there). Didn't even know they had reformed. Told my new friend and he was excited so we went along, stood right at the front, watched Amelia's new band support them, the whole audience sang along to every song, Huw looked like Frank Skinner, held up placards like "E = MC5", and everyone had a great time. I was surprised how many songs of theirs I knew even though I wasn't a fan. My new friend bought some Fierce 7 inches they were selling and got them signed by Huw. I have never seen anyone so happy in all my life. i've since got some of their stuff and love it. It's odd, if I'd heard them at the time I probably would have sneered at them (was a Sarah Records snob in the 90s) and probably wouldn't have understood half the references in their music that I do now. The Pooh Sticks may be a cult, but my goodness their fans are a devoted bunch.

They had the Fierce singles at that show?? Damn!At the NYC show, we had no 7"s... no Fletcher... and no placards, but still brilliant.
Great story, Rob!

woops...from their facebook page:
Don Henley's birthday today. "Desperado" had already been front-and-centre for a couple of years before the Eagles really kicked in, in time for 'Million Seller'. But, truth be told, it was actually the spectre of "The Boys Of Summer" which hung over much of The Pooh Sticks' 1991-1993. There's a story. Won't tell it.
