THE 2011 ILM SUPER-MEGA YEAR-END ALBUMS 'N' TRACKS POLL Campaigning Thread

Because the previous thread got lost in the sandbox...

Some tracks I'll be voting for (and you should too):

Björk - Tesla (Omar Souleyman Remix)
Never quite sure who's the musical brain behind this remix but it's better than anything either Björk or Omar Souleyman put out on their own last year (imo).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cexNpxOBbLk

Locussolus - I Want It (Lindstrom and Prins Thomas Remix)
My #2 Bounciest Track of 2011 (after The Crystal Ark), and the year's winner of the Tensnake Award for Gratuitous Nostalgia-Pop Reference in a Remix

This is my favourite scuzzy rock song of 2011, complete with a blistering psych guitar outro:

Björk - Tesla (Omar Souleyman Remix)
Never quite sure who's the musical brain behind this remix but it's better than anything either Björk or Omar Souleyman put out on their own last year (imo).

This was mixed / produced by Mark Gergis, the man who does the edits for the Souleyman albums & has compiled a number of Sublime Frequencies compilations. Not sure why his name was left off the single's packaging.

Milton Parker, Thursday, 5 January 2012 23:15 (thirteen years ago)

Tuomas turned me on to this after he nominated it, and now it has a good shot at being my #1 (bumping "Heaven" to #2)

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 5 January 2012 23:16 (thirteen years ago)

xp Ah ok that makes sense. I thought it might have been the music guy who tours with Omar Souleyman.

questino (seandalai), Thursday, 5 January 2012 23:16 (thirteen years ago)

He tours & DJ's Sublime Frequencies tracks. His own music is great too, though a lot more aggressive: http://www.porestsound.net/info/

I'm here to support Hebden-Reid- Gustafsson Live at The South Bank
---> why because it appeals to people who like spaced out jams AND major jazz honking
and has a tasteful pink and red cover

Not the best video, but I feel it deserves a few minutes of your time.

One more because I think this ^^ is a tasteless way to leave things

Bitchin Bajas, Water Wrackets -- this one has awesome bongos and the short film is nice to watch too -- there's a calm layer of sound and a frenetic layer of sound and they bounce around each other in a very pleasant and playful way

The Don P is amazing yes, credit to Deej for tipping me off to it. Instantly vaulted into my top 20 songs for the year.

Tim F, Friday, 6 January 2012 22:05 (thirteen years ago)

You know how it goes by now. If you occasionally find my music taste anything other than risible, you're invited to dip in. Contains prog, weirdness, pretty melodies and unspeakable noise, roughly in that order

Connan Mockasin - Forever Dolphin Love

Probably the most amazing song you'll ever hear about (possibly unrequited) zoophilia, and a lovely low-budget video too. When the main bassline drops in it's genuinely spine-chilling.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7CaTJ2SvG8

William D. Drake - Homesweet Homestead Hideaway

If you can get past the first line, an odyssey of twisty melodic joy and sorrow awaits you, with the rousingest little coda in all of England. (That description should sort the sheep from the goats)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjeo1eWUE60

The Devin Townsend Project - The Mighty Masturbator

I'm not even going to begin to describe this one. If you buy the ticket, I will not be held responsible for the ride. All ye sophisticates of ILM, flee! Flee back to your pop-house and your art-indie! Flee! Flee!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58mv4sP-4TU

Ulver - Stone Angels

A full reading of a (very, very good) human-condition-in-the-time-of-machines poem by Keith Waldrop unwinds, accompanied with ecclesiastical keyboard drones. It works unbelievably well - soothing, moving, arresting, haunting black Norwegian magic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mwoynNf9tw

To Arms Etc - The Black Pampas

A fucking beast of a 5-time/4-time pop song, with a Krautrock rave-up at the end, all in under 4 minutes. And they played my wedding.

http://www.toarmsetc.com/track/the-black-pampas

North Sea Radio Orchestra - Berliner Luft

Cut from similar cloth to William D. Drake but with more of an uptempo Krautrock vibe - pretty much the intersection of Cardiacs-worshipping melodic loveliness and folksy Anglopop gusto.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqRJcoY5TN0

The Book Of Knots - Planemo

Contains ex-Sleepytime Gorilla Museum members AND Mike Patton. Need I say more? OK, it contains some of the most flat-out awesome clanging guitar I've ever heard, and it really, really wants you to cower. So if you feel like cowering...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOIX2A1vi-s

Knifeworld - HMS Washout

Yet more Cardiacs worship, but at least it's by an actual member of Cardiacs this time. It's also an avant-garde voyage into psych-rock lunacy, and it's fun as fuck. Sadly it's nearly 15 minutes long. You won't click, will you now?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u29LB6XC9t4

Van Der Graaf Generator - Your Time Starts Now

It's the best song on the new VdGG! Therefore, it's one of the best songs by anyone!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VeUEVO5sCvg

These constitute in descending order 9 of my 12 favourite songs of the year. The other 3 are a 23-minute song by Mogwai, a 12-minute song by Wilco and a 13-minute song by Kate Bush. It really has been a year to go long. But then I always was a sucker for length. Tch.

once a week is ample, Friday, 6 January 2012 23:39 (thirteen years ago)

I kind of have to vote for this Romeo Santos song now that it was nominated. His voice makes me wet, and I like the pop bachata formula overall, but I wish he would stop saying the stupid little slogans over and over ("You need this in your life," etc.).

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 7 January 2012 04:25 (thirteen years ago)

Also the melodies are strong.

Teddiedrum-Odd Lovers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRd77eApw8g

I don't know much about this band but this is in my top ten. The last minute is possibly my favourite bit of music this year.

xpost to Johnny Fever, I've been playing the Barbara Panther album a lot over the last month. I think Tuomas did a great job getting his nominations in straight away so his choices came on the Spotify playlist at the beginning. I loved Moonlightpeople instantly but ended up voting for the album.

Another couple of songs I'd like to see do well.

Jerimih-Another Song

This is the best thing I discovered going through The Lex's end of year Youtube playlist. This maybe the most beautiful song I've heard all year.

Finally The Go Team-Buy Nothing Day

www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxGfWWQnFfs

I had totally written this band off after a boring second album but their latest one is great all the way through. This song is the highlight, I'm surprised it wasn't a hit.

Gavin Russom - "Night Sky"

Alternating between beatific and bug-eyed, this epic jam showcases Russom's acid house, krautrock & Hawkwind chops while still being one of the, er, songiest things he's done this side of Black Leotard Front's "Casual Friday" & the Crystal Ark's "Touch". YOU ARE THE LIGHT!

Some albums/whatsits you should vote for:

Fabric "A Sort of Radiance": of all the excellent releases on Spectrum Spools this year, this was my favourite. "Cosmic synth jam" is hardly an underexplored area at the moment, but this one sticks out. It's difficult (for me, anyway) to put a finger on why it's so good without resorting to generalities like "immersiveness", so just give it a listen!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bviFxBu0AY

Floating Points "Shadows EP": this dude was my favourite electronic producer in 2011 (see also the Fatima EP), but he doesn't seem to get that much love on ILM. It's smoky and jazzy and perfect for the dance music fan who never goes dancing but has a comfortable armchair. The Windows 95 screensaver video for "Sais" is a bonus.

^^ that one should really be number one. Especially the 10 hours long version. It breaks boundaries in that it is a song that allows you to 'end' it whenever you like, after a minute or after four hours, or after whenever you feel like ending it. But if you don't want to end it, it will continue for you.

I certainly wouldn't have, but hey. (Le Bateau Ivre), Saturday, 7 January 2012 23:25 (thirteen years ago)

No other song does that for you, not even songs that consist of loops. This is different, and groundbreaking in my opinion.

Go - Delilah is gorgeous ethereal night time music, like Jamie Woon's "Night Air" but more lustful. Defies expectations and avoids a big pay-off. Marvelous restraint. Spine-tingling.

Young Galaxy - Shapeshifting (album)

Electropop band a la Stars sends their demos for album three to D. Lissvik of Studio, gets him to (re)produce the entire thing. Expected beauty results. This track is the only one that really features the male and female vocals equally and the female vocals (which are better) dominate otherwise, but the chorus or outro or whatever you would call the end of this is basically perfect.

Seany Mac - One of Those Days (Organ Mix)

Speed garage track released back in 2009, apparently, but which literally nobody took notice of until this year, at which point it was in 4 or 5 different mixes I heard. Wouldn't vote for it in normal polls, but in ILM universe I don't think I can avoid it, esp. since we all discovered it at the same time.

Drat, all my stuff was on the Sandbox.

So my #1 is TV On The Radio. Here's the entire album with each song accompanied by a short film.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8B5GP0AiQMc

My #2, Graveyard - Hisingen Blues

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7kcAaAu4jU

Such a great song. In a cooler world, "The Siren" would be a hit, they'd be as big as Adele, and people would be singing it in karaoke bars. But to get a sense of how good Joakim Nilsson is, just try to sing along.

I was captive on a slave boat rowing through the swamp
they threw me off into the lake of alligators
eyes were glowing in the dark, and fear was in the air
as the beasts were closing in, panic struck my mind
swimming through the mud, yes I was swimming through the mud
and a thousand flamingos led my way,
riding to the feast for I was gonna meet my doom

Tonight a demon came into my head and tried to choke me in my sleep
Tonight a demon came into my head and tried to choke me in my sleep

I thought it was a feast of friends but lord they proved me wrong
what seemed to be my rescue turned out to be a trap
suddenly I was alone inside the demon's house
He climbed the walls with blood and murder glowing through his eyes
and I couldn't escape and every move I made was wrong.

Tonight a demon came into my head and tried to choke me in my sleep
Tonight a demon came into my head and tried to choke me in my sleep

Yeah, better give up. Just like when I've had a few too many beers and mistakenly thought I could pull off some Marvin Gaye or Van Morrison, only really great singers can pull it off like Nilsson. It's not just him, the band is amazing, and just about every song is superb.

JoJo's remix of “Marvin's Room” is heartbreaking, and so much more affecting than Drake's version imo. What are essentially the same core lyrics seem a lot easier to empathize with when not coming from a position of power.
+she has a beautiful voice +the backing track sounds more alive somehow
