also, i feel as guilty for liking some ryan likes in public as he feels guilty for liking andrew wk in secret.
tom, they do sound like more un-pop side of new order, spec. the instrumentals, slightly uh "aquatic", dubbed out cello/violin, no vocals (unless that's changed) except little sampled phrases occasionally. they sound slightly "queasy" (which may be what brock was getting at with his "alienating"), but very pleasant to my ears.

Most of the 'groove-based' post-post-punk I've heard so far has too much ego in it eg the Liars, stop fucking howling so much and pay more attn to the bassline you c-farmers.

i only just heard 'Put It Away, Put It Away, Put It Away Dad.' for first time but it's not on any version of this LP right?
― Cittaslow Mazza (blueski), Thursday, 30 October 2008 15:54 (sixteen years ago)
i got a promo copy of this for $1 at a record sale...i really like it. i'm kinda behind the times on buzz bands. maybe next year i will get into LCD soundsystem.

Outhud had some absolutely fantastic stuff when they first started out. I think this album was part of that, but I'm not sure. They did some damn fine tributes to post-punk. Maybe I'm talking about the singles that came out before this album.
― Gross Chapel British Grenadiers (Bimble), Monday, 9 February 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i mean on first listen i see the parallels to stuff like ESG or Liquid Liquid etc, but it definitely doesn't feel like a "tribute" to post punk to me...it's definitely slicker and more modern dance music influenced than that type of stuff, like it seemed like a record that would have been made in the 2000s not a record that would have been made in the early 80s
― Yah Trick Ya Kid K (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 9 February 2009 17:46 (sixteen years ago)
it was the singles and live gigs from before that album that gave them the "post-punk" tag, as they were murkier and dubbier. By the time of this they were moving away from that. For what it's worth, with them and !!! it was never an intentional "let's sound like..." but they were honestly punk rockers (of the 90s) drawing from disco, funk etc, so if they sounded like Pigbag or Liquid Liquid or Konk or ESG or whatever, well that makes sense.

I was really into Outhud until they started singing. I still pull S.T.R.E.E.T.D.A.D. out occasionally and it holds up for the most part. I could never stand the singing with either Outhud or !!! .
― I shall always respect my elders (Z S), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:26 (sixteen years ago)
!!! would have been 10x better w/o singing.
this outhud record doesn't have singing. which is probably good.
― Yah Trick Ya Kid K (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:29 (sixteen years ago)
Right. The other one, Let Us Never Speak of It Again has a lot of singing. Although, of course, that allmusic review says everything about it is awesome, so your mileage may vary.
― I shall always respect my elders (Z S), Monday, 9 February 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)
the early our hud singles and their side of the split with !!! are great stuff. really ex dubby guitar playing. i never liked this album as much as that stuff.
― mizzell, Monday, 9 February 2009 21:56 (sixteen years ago)
also, i really liked the singles from the second album (it's for you and one life to leave) but never heard the whole record.
― mizzell, Monday, 9 February 2009 21:58 (sixteen years ago)
Second the love for "Dad, There's a Little Phrase Called 'Too Much Information'" and "Put It Away, Put It Away, Put It Away, Dad." Outhud were great, as were (are?) !!!, but my personal fave out of all of them was the Rapture's Pieces of the People We Love, which is just a perfect non-stop dance-rock monster of an album that everyone should own. I miss early-'00s disco-punk.

I got a $5 copy of let us never speak of it again a few weeks ago, It's excellent, earned a separate thread revive here from me too, actually.
― mehlt, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 01:36 (sixteen years ago)
!!! are ace - whatever happened to Out Hud?
― Mahatma Blagojevich (redmond), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:22 (sixteen years ago)
Broke up a year ago or so.
and they were way better than !!!, if you ask me.
― mehlt, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:44 (sixteen years ago)
agreed^
― vergangenheitsbewaeltigung (later arpeggiator), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 03:50 (sixteen years ago)
It seems like !!! have aged pretty poorly too (I imagine there's probably a lot of retrospective "oh, disco-rock ca. 2003" shame thats coming to the fore lately), whereas I think Out Hud are good enough to be exempt from that shame, especially when it's much easier to just pin it it all on The Rapture.

heard this today for the first time in over a decade and it holds up pretty well. Never connected with the follow-up, but the debut and their side of the split with !!! were definitely my shit at the time
