Best BBC 'Sound Of' Winner?

Soul singer Michael Kiwanuka has come top of the BBC Sound of 2012 list, which aims to showcase the best rising music stars for the year ahead.

With a voice that has won comparisons to Bill Withers, the 24-year-old has already supported Adele on tour.

The Sound of 2012 list was compiled using tips from 184 key UK-based music critics, broadcasters and bloggers.

Now in its tenth year, previous winners include Jessie J, Adele, Mika, Ellie Goulding, Corinne Bailey Rae and Keane.

Kiwanuka, from London, cites influences ranging from Otis Redding and Bob Dylan to Miles Davis.

He started out as a session guitarist, working with Tinie Tempah's producer Labrinth, before stepping in front of the microphone and signing to the Communion label, which was set up by Mumford and Sons' Ben Lovett.

He said: "I never expected to be recognised in this way.

"It's a great surprise and it means a lot that people are accepting the music they've heard so far, and it will bring the music to many more people, which for any musician is a great privilege."

Kiwanuka came ahead of US R&B singer Frank Ocean, who has worked with Kanye West and Jay-Z and was at number two on the list.

New York rapper Azealia Banks was in third place, followed by high-octane dance DJ and producer Skrillex at four and Swedish electronic duo Niki & The Dove in fifth place.

The list was compiled using tips from 184 influential tastemakers, who each named their favourite three new acts.

The participants ranged from music magazine editors and newspaper critics to respected bloggers, DJs and radio and TV producers.

David Smyth, chief rock and pop critic of the London Evening Standard, who took part, said: "I picked Michael because his music really grabbed me when I first heard him last summer.

"Paul Butler of The Bees produced his song Tell Me a Tale, giving it a vintage psychedelic soul feel. It was an unusual backdrop for such a rich, warm voice."

The tastemakers' choices could be performers from any country and any musical genre.

Artists who had scored a UK top 20 single or album before 13 November 2011 were disqualified, as were those already well-known to the UK public - for example by featuring in the final stages of a TV talent show or already being a member of a successful band.

A longlist of the top 15 artists was published in December, and the top five have been revealed this week.

Jessie J came top of the Sound of 2011 list. She went on to sell 805,000 copies of her album Who You Are - the most successful debut for a British artist last year.

Dubstep producer James Blake and indie band The Vaccines were also in the top five.

The other previous winners are: Ellie Goulding (Sound of 2010), Little Boots (Sound of 2009), Adele (Sound of 2008), Mika (Sound of 2007), Corinne Bailey Rae (Sound of 2006), The Bravery (Sound of 2005), Keane (Sound of 2004) and 50 Cent (Sound of 2003).

Other artists in the top five in previous years include Hurts (Sound of 2010), Florence and the Machine (Sound of 2009), Duffy (Sound of 2008), Klaxons (Sound of 2007), Plan B (Sound of 2006), Bloc Party (Sound of 2005), Franz Ferdinand (Sound of 2004) and Dizzee Rascal (Sound of 2003).

Voted Little Boots.

I read all the lists earlier and there was a really unusually low inclusion:success ratio in 2007 (The Twang in second!) - you kind of get the feel reading it that no one at all genuinely backed the likes of them or Air Traffic but figured that landfill indie was going to carry on indefinitely.

1. 50 Cent
The last 12 months belonged to 50 Cent in the US after his album, Get Rich or Die Tryin', became the fastest-selling debut ever. It went on to become the biggest-selling album of 2003 in the US, while his hit single In Da Club achieved the same feat in the singles market. His past as a drug dealer and shooting victim gained him notoriety and he is now rivalling his mentor Eminem as the top rapper in the US.

2.
The Electric Six

If you heard rock fans shouting "Danger! Danger!" or "I want to take you to a gay bar" in 2003, it was this Detroit group's fault. Wild and silly but catchy and eminently danceable, their catchphrases and good-time attitude earned them two top five hit singles - although they were seen as a novelty band by some.

3. Yeah Yeah Yeahs
One of the leading groups to come out of New York since The Strokes, this trio enjoyed critical acclaim and some commercial success in 2003. Three singles reached the UK top 40, peaking with Date with the Night at 16 in April. They were also nominated for the Shortlist Prize - the US equivalent of the Mercury Music Prize - and got a Grammy nomination for best alternative album.

4. The Thrills
This Irish group found a large audience with their deliriously sunny Beach Boys-inspired tunes, although they did not break into rock's premier league. Their debut album, So Much for the City, was one of the soundtracks to the summer and was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. Three singles reached the UK top 40, led by Big Sur, which hit number 17 in June.

5. Dizzee Rascal

The UK urban breakthrough artist of 2003, Dizzee Rascal produced one of the freshest and most innovative sounds of the year. Armed with a distinctive quick-fire rapping style and harsh beats that mixed UK garage and hip-hop, his debut album, Boy in Da Corner, won the prestigious Mercury Music Prize, beating the likes of Radiohead, Coldplay and The Darkness.

6. Interpol
New York art rockers Interpol were the only artists in the top 10 not to have a UK top 40 single in 2003. But their stylishly brooding debut album Turn on the Bright Lights turned many heads and earned a nomination for the Shortlist Prize.

7. Audio Bullys
With pumping bass, pounding beats and punky vocals, London "dirty house" duo lent some attitude to dance music. The year saw them break out of the club scene and into mainstream music, and their single We Don't Care reached number 15 in January.

8. Mario
This teenage US singer failed to capture the hearts of the soul audience in 2003. The adolescent pop on his debut album was not enough to propel him to mainstream success in the US - but he did enjoy top 30 hits in the UK with Just A Friend and C'mon.

9. The Datsuns
New Zealand's premier guitar grinders The Datsuns made a splash at the start of the year, gaining a reputation as an explosive live band. They were named best live act at the NME Awards but they struggled to transform their on-stage energy into sales.

10. Sean Paul

Jamaica's latest idol was one of the year's smash hit stars, taking dancehall reggae to the top of the charts around the world. He scored five UK top five singles in nine months, including a number one guest spot on Blu Cantrell's Breathe. He also hooked up with Beyonce on Baby Boy while his solo track Get Busy was one of the biggest-selling singles of the year in the US.

The ones that got away

The Darkness

The Darkness shot to fame in the second half of 2003
The spandex-clad rockers were the success story of the year in UK rock, bringing the fun back to a guitar scene that had been dominated by serious and stony-faced bands for a decade. They were known in the music industry before 2003 - but not one music expert tipped them in the Sound of 2003 survey because no-one thought they could make it.

Evanescence
June saw this US goth rock band burst to the top of the charts after their song Bring Me To Life appeared on the soundtrack to the Ben Affleck film Daredevil.

The Black Eyed Peas
One of the year's biggest-selling singles came from this LA-based hip-hop group with Where Is the Love?, taken from their third album.

Jamie Cullum
This charismatic young pianist and singer became the most popular jazz artist the UK has seen for decades when his album Twentysomething was released.

what are Amber & Alice's opinions on jessie j?

Jimmy Riddle Orchestra (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Friday, 6 January 2012 13:34 (thirteen years ago)

They like her a lot.

Mark G, Friday, 6 January 2012 14:05 (thirteen years ago)

I don't think that in 2003 they'd quite worked out the 'rules' of what makes this such a consistent lolfest.

Otherwise, the non-British or Irish choices just seem really random, like there's one tokenistically included each year. Except they somehow managed to miss Nicki Minaj in 2010 despite anyone who was even remotely paying attention knowing full well she was going to be bigger than Delphic.

Matt DC, Friday, 6 January 2012 14:13 (thirteen years ago)

the rationale behind what makes the list seems to be in a weird kind of limbo - in principle it shouldn't have anything to do with what's going to actually be big ("The list was compiled using tips from 184 influential tastemakers, who each named their favourite three new acts") but in practise it obviously will because it's mainly drawn from industry ppl and because it's the most widely-read list of its kind in the UK

so you get bands like Delphic and, idk, Everything Everything that were never likely to be big ballers but probably seemed like a big deal to someone in a certain kind of industry bubble

Buster Mottrhymes (DJ Mencap), Friday, 6 January 2012 14:26 (thirteen years ago)

I guess it needs two or three picks to tank each year otherwise the whole enterprise seems more premeditated and robotic and joyless than it is anyway

Buster Mottrhymes (DJ Mencap), Friday, 6 January 2012 14:29 (thirteen years ago)

the whole process is even sadder if these are the acts that the "tastemakers" are honestly excited about imo

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Friday, 6 January 2012 14:31 (thirteen years ago)

^

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Friday, 6 January 2012 14:38 (thirteen years ago)

yeah I guess I mean that if you occupy certain positions, you prolly get to a point where there's a mental conflation between being excited abt something because you think it rocks, and being excited abt something because you think it's gonna make paper

obv I'm projecting here but that's kind of how I imagine this list coming to the conclusions it does

Buster Mottrhymes (DJ Mencap), Friday, 6 January 2012 14:55 (thirteen years ago)

i just assume that a lot of the tastemakers in question are journos and tv presenters and such, not actually within the industry proper, so it oughtn't to matter to them whether Generic Newcomer X is gonna do actual money-making business? and even when it does matter, the massive wrongness of a lot of the picks shd give some employers pause for thought.

the white plies (Noodle Vague), Friday, 6 January 2012 14:58 (thirteen years ago)

It can't just be "who do we think is gonna make paper" because I find it hard to believe even the most siloed of music industry types took a look at Gold Panda and Joy Orbison (both of whom I really like) and saw dollar signs.

Matt DC, Friday, 6 January 2012 15:11 (thirteen years ago)

more choices than not are quite defensible tho, if you're someone with an interest in defending it - mainly cos the list doesn't seem to have any explicitly stated criteria

I mean you have hilarious and documented failures lke Joe Lean & the etc but also loads of successes, some massively so, and then stuff that can claim 'critical acceptance' or w/e

eg I doubt Gold Panda sells enough to do more than pay the rent but he did a DJ Kicks album, which confers a sort of respect on you

Buster Mottrhymes (DJ Mencap), Friday, 6 January 2012 15:15 (thirteen years ago)

as far as i understand it (they've never asked me, lol) it's not made clear what criteria you're meant to be voting on, so the end result is this odd hodgepodge of both. can't really work out what angle would show anyone involved in a good light though

all i see is angels in my eyes (lex pretend), Friday, 6 January 2012 15:16 (thirteen years ago)

im guessing they want to pick artists that will be huge and artists that might not be huge but critic(not just rock but any type) darlings to give the list a bit of 'cred'

Little Boots and Adele both had debut singles that I loved (Stuck On Repeat and Hometown Glory) but made boring first albums. Don't really have much time for anyone else on the winners list.

2004 looked like the year they got it almost right. I'm not too sure who Gemma Fox and Tali are but everyone else did pretty well that year or a couple of years after.

Worst band on the long lists would be Glasvegas, serious contender for the worst band of all time.

two months pass...

Just had a listen to the Michael Kiwanuka album on Spotify. It's great! Classic soul with a great voice, and - most importantly - great songs. I can see him partly following the Amy Winehouse path (adding a touch of classic singer/songwriter), but this is better. Surprisingly good!

RIP Big Man

If anything, he's more of a Michael Bublé in that he's a young person who makes old music that it's okay for both youngs and olds to like. Amy Winehouse wasn't that tame even when she was sleeping.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 28 March 2012 21:10 (thirteen years ago)
